The wide angle magnification of the WL-3 of x0.75, so on a 50mm lens, you should get a 37.5mm equivalent

I was using the 16-50mm kits lens, it’ll work with a lens (or step up filter) with a filter size of 40.5mm

Yes you can, the filter diameter will need to be 58mm
