This feels like this is a story that couldn't decide what it wanted to be and thus tried to do *everything*, without doing any of it particularly well. It's a shame, since I was also really hoping for something on the spookier side, but at least I'm not alone in wanting darker stories. Thanks for the review!!
That is exactly it! They played it too safe with the "horror" and stretched themselves too thin with all the LIs for the romance to work in every route.
SAME Lys, I was so hoping for another 7'scarlet situation, and instead I just got the usual Otomate otome formula w/ ghost boys.

Honestly, it's frustrating just how stale and tired the Otomate formula has become in recent years because I WANT to be excited and surprised by what THE biggest otome company is delivering, but so far I've really only been able to get that in indie titles. It's so dire out here I've resorted to trying bishoujo/galge to get my fix (now that's the real horror!)

I'm a scaredy cat so I have been enjoying 9rip! It gives me a safe way to enjoy "horror". I still have to turn the volume down sometimes and there is nothing about Hibiki I can handle. 😭😭😭
Having a tamer horror title for Halloween this year (that's *spooky* rather than scary I'd say overall) has made me so happy and while it has its issues I've found myself loving every LI (EXCEPT FOR YOU HIBIKI DON'T TOUCH ME 😭😭😭)
I love hearing that you enjoyed 9RIP, it's definitely a solid otome game overall. I am a huge horror lover, so I needed a bit more scares, but having a lighter experience definitely makes it easier to get into for folks who don't necessarily like scares.

@@blerdyotome I loved hibiki. Like yeh I don’t agree with some stuff he did , he was a bit yandere , neither of his happy endings seemed healthy tbh but I couldn’t bring myself to hate him. I mean, I’ve seen worst. I actually felt bad for him and just wanted him to be happy . He was so adorable . Like a puppy :3

I personally prefer this type of mildly spoopy vibe as opposed to something like Virche. I can't really speak on Virche in detail because I've been putting it off for as long as possible due to my dread for bad endings. I'm also a completionist, so I've got these opposing feelings when it comes to otome games, and can't bring myself to just skip through the bad endings.
I've only played through the two school ghost stories, and enjoyed them. They had "bad" endings, but it wasn't as in your face "despair" as what I'd normally try to avoid, like with Virche. They make the bad endings quick here, so I can breeze through them, and they don't really contribute to much if someone were to just skip them altogether. There are also only 3 bad endings I've encountered per LI thus far (never finished Lover Pretend because of how many bad endings they have for each LI 😮💨) I must say, the bittersweet endings of them not being able to be together as human and ghost is very heart-wrenching, which I can bring myself to enjoy.
I also like quite a few of the character designs (Kureha, Koyo, Koharu), while with Virche, although the art is beautiful, the characters are mostly on the effeminate side except for Adolphe and maybe Scien. Ofc, that's just my personal preference.
I agree with the part about the common route and the shorter LI route. I felt like the pacing was okay thus far, where it didn't seem to take forever to get through the common route before the LI, and where I didn't have to backtrack too much to get to the other LI route in the same group of stories. The romantic development may seem kinda abrupt, but at least for school ghost stories, I can see how being stuck in an alternate world environment in life and death situations can cause people to grow closer faster and more easily? I'm playing through Sena's route currently, so I may change my opinion after I finish the game. I'm looking forward to Koyo because of his overwhelming popularity in Japan, and for Koharu because another LI voiced by Azakami Yohei who can cook? I'm down! 🤤 also, although I don't prefer the cutesy characters, Minami because he's voiced by my favorite VA 😅
I'm not good with like jump scares and stuff but I don't mind tension and violence in stories lol. I am still looking forward to this game as it seems like there is an LI for everyone out of the 9. I ordered my LE but have it shipped to my parents home in the US so I wont be able to play it for another 4 months or so until I visit the country.
So, this game is pretty tame. I think you should be okay for most of the game, though Hibiki and Koyo's routes had the darker storylines. Kureha for sure had a jumpscare that I remember getting me when I ran through the route for the first time.
Hopefully the time flies by and you can get to the game soon!
Sounds exhausting 😂 but I'd buy for $20 digitally if I want a janky drama. Kinda a let down...i am also easily bothered by an underwhelming protag in a very interesting setting. The ghosts sound cool tho, this may have been better if the romance was left out? That way everyone could've focused on their dilemmas? But vibes is the right word! Thanks for the review!
I AGREE on maybe waiting for a sale, but there are some good points about it. I love Misa as a character, just the story doesn't always rise to expectations. The game really is held back by the romance plot in some places. I think BL games do better at going all in with darker premises while also giving a satisfying romance story.
The ghost boys are definitely the highlight of the story, I really loved most of their backstories and wanted to learn more about their stuff instead of Misa's "conflict"

@blerdyotome oohh okay, that makes sense. Unfortunate that it holds itself back, the art is still good and it does do well in certain areas, that's something for sure :) thanks for the reply! I agree that BL does have some darker themes it's able to consistently convey when it wants to, I can't really think of an otome that writes itself tonally dark like that, or rather it's been a long while. And yessss ur reviews are super informative!
As a romance , it’s fine . But the horror is too tame which I feel is probably not good when you’re doing a story about ghosts lol , I was way more scared playing virche evermore. Lol
Agreed! If you're gonna make a story about ghosts ya gotta deliver some kind of scares.

I think that, despite it’s very obvious flaws, I still think this looks like it would be good enough to buy. But maybe on sale.
I definitely enjoyed playing it overall, there are some great stories and I LOVE Koharu and Koyo to bits. But I definitely wouldn't fault anyone waiting for a sale.
