    Thanks for all your videos. I've owned Vistas and Fibes and had minor issues I could live with, but I recently got a Sonor that got mangled in the post. I'm going to have a go at putting it into some sort of shape using your videos as a guide.

    Thank you very much for these videos. I followed your every step to the letter and repaired a very similar crack in a 50 year old Zickos clear acrylic rack tom. I then followed your instructions on buffing acrylic shells and it looks and sounds amazing. I rarely follow instructions, but trusted your experience and am grateful that I did. I will finish up by buffing the entire kit.

    Call Safelite! LOL. Hey, I'm from IN too! Just got a vintage Bonham sized Vistalite kit from the 70s. 26,14,16 and just added a vintage 18" FT all Amber and they are awesome. Luckily there's not one chip nor one crack anywhere on this 40+ yr old kit. Black dots on top and clear amby's on the bottom and they sound great. There is just the slightest flat spot near the seam on all the bearing edges which I assume is common to the vintage drums and it hurts the tuning not one bit. 14 x 6.5" Luddy black beauty rounds out the happiness.

    thanks so much for these repair videos, I have a crack in my FT and want to repair it. I do have a question, will the crack still be visible after the repair. My guess is yes, but I thought I would ask.

    Will that Weld On work on a crack that went from top to bottom? I have a Vistalite concert like that, cracked at the seam.

    Wally, just an FYI for your other videos..... Gold'n Times was NOT a shellmaking company, but rather, a reseller. The shells were made by that other "S" company you couldn't remember, Sterling Products in NJ. The "tabbed seam" is a hallmark of Sterling shells, as opposed to RCI, which are ultrasonically-welded, and the colors are period-correct.

    Thanks for posting this video! I noticed that you wiped off the excess adhesive after applying it. Does the adhesive that remains on the shell rub out easily after the repair is completed?

    • @ludwigsnob
      @ludwigsnob  6 лет назад

      The skill is not to apply too much solvent that you're doing 'sloppy work'. The excess solvent will be forced out once you fit the shell back together. Wipe the excess with an absorbent cotton rag parallel to the repaired crack. The solvent will start to immediately soften and create a haze on the acrylic. This will buff out.

    What do you do if the crack hasn't made it to the bearing edge of the drum and theres no way to separate it at all? Will the weld-on be able to penetrate the crack?

    • @ludwigsnob
      @ludwigsnob  4 года назад

      There is this thing call capillary action and it will suck the Weldon into the crack. Use sparingly. Be prepared to wipe off the excess with a soft cotton cloth. Do not touch the drum for 24 hours.

      @@ludwigsnob Thanks Wally! I'm refinishing a smoke kit and after taking off the lugs I noticed 3 drums have 1 small crack each - nothing visible but want to fix now and prevent spreading

    Thanks for the information. I watched your other seam/crack/fracture video and it was very helpful. What do you do about the excess glue that seeps out of the cracks? It looked like you wiped that off with a paper towel. Does that stick to the glue and leave fibers, or does it wipe off cleanly? I'm getting ready to refurbish two Vistalite sets that I bought a few years ago, and want to do as nice a job as possible. Thank you!

      Wipe off the excess immediately with an absorbent cotton rag and then buff the area when you get to that section of the project. It'll be perfect. Remember, it's not a glue. It's solvent and will start to deform the acrylic immediately.

    Would super glue work for cracks?

    • @ludwigsnob
      @ludwigsnob  8 месяцев назад

      Super glue works on anything. So does duct tape. If you're going to take the time to repair something, use the right tools.

      Weldon #3 or Weldon #4... The difference is the working time and cure time. Either one will get the job done.

    Is there a reason you're not drilling a small hole at the end of the crack to prevent the crack from traveling?

    • @ludwigsnob
      @ludwigsnob  2 года назад

      Drill a hole? No Way! The Weldon stops the crack.

    Wally, thanks for the demo. I've been a life-long drummer, but I am new to visualities. You offered people to contact you if they had questions. I've seen a number of 1970s vistalite drums for sale in various colors, configs, etc. What is your feeling on cracks that are not hairline, like the one you fixed, but cracks that are small and irregular in size? I have a lead on a 4 piece vistalite kit date from the 1970s that has one crack by the bass drum legs. My main question is would that crack be stable or become bigger with time? Also, I can tell the lugs (on this lit) would have to be replaced or polished, but that's another matter. I guess I'm trying to gauge if it would be a better investment just to buy a new vistalite kit without the hassle of buying an older one, having to refurbish it. Would you allow me to email you directly with pics of this kit for your opinion? Thanks for any and all information. Brendan

      @@ludwigsnob wally this is great. I just tried this on a crystal beat bass. Of course I was over zealous with the glue and now have 'sloppywork' some blotches etc. Its holding but looks bad
      I didnt wipe it out enough. I didnt trust the glue was in the crack. Looks like hell but hey I tried.
      What is the best way to sand out where my glue ran? Any good advice for sand paper etc??

      It's easy to wet sand the inside but it's damn-near impossible to get an orbital buffer to do a good job inside a small diameter shell. Just use "Extra-Fine Grit". You have to use the edge of the buffing bonnet. @@jessedwyre7672
