- This is me and my tech Joey installing the "Randall May Internal Drum Miking System" in one of my Drum Workshop drum sets. Lots of tech-talk, drum porn, power tools, shredding goodness, goofy moves and dumb jokes! You'll love it! For online drum lessons check out www.thomaslangsdrumuniverse.com
when you have multiple dw 9000 pedals cluttered around in your garage and you dont know where they came from, thats when you know you made it
Problems i wish i had lol
@Moises Jerry sweet bro
I guess I’ve made it years ago? 🤔
Wait, shit, this isn't a video for an internal milking system? Moving on, then.
Hah I read that the same way when I first saw it
Thomas Lang, first man ever to read the instructions BEFORE setting something up !
From my trials and experiments I found that adding external mic's to all the internal ones, or adding close ambience mic's- boosts each internal signal and actually adds a huge amount of amplitude to each individual internal mic. It's really darn amazing to be able to mix and blend the two mic's before the signal even reaches the pre-amps and desk/interface. It's just a great way to get a fat sound before even touching an EQ or compressor. Me likey mucho! BAM!
Thanks for this! The video is extremely entertaining and helpful. But I was left wondering about this.
So now you have 2 mics on every tom? And mix the internal mic with the external mic through the May Mic blend box?
Thomas, you are such an inspiration to all of us human drummers. I tell people you are the living argument for alien life because the things you do on the kit ARE NOT HUMAN! 😂 but seriously, practicing your linear patterns and focusing on linear motion has really helped me grow as a drummer for over 15 years now. You are easily my favorite drummer. Love ya man. Keep on keepin on. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Well now that was hilarious, entertaining and informative. I'm seriously considering buying these, which is how I ended up here. They sound amazing man. Thanks for posting this Thomas, and always a pleasure to hear you play.
I felt like I spent a day with Thomas Lang
"What do we need???" "Beer" "oh, beer. Of course!"
:-D Al Bundy in action! :-P :-D
What kind of German doesn't have any beer at home...???
" it's called BLEEED! " cracked me up xD
Thomas Lang reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger. ahahahaha
The Drumminator itself! lol. Regards
Considering they’re both Austrian...
Lmao true words.
Wow. Those toms sound amazing and the kick and snare do as well. I was nervous until you engaged the snare wires.
No phasing issues at all. One mic is inside the drum and picking up a very direct and isolated signal and the other mic is outside picking up very different frequency and amplitude. No cancellation at all, especially because you'd be using two different types of mic's and the 2 mic's are completely separate unlike OH's where phasing is more likely due to the positioning and the fact that the mic's are usually identical and often paired/stereo matched.
love the garage as it was, shows a diligent drummer
He's demonstrating how the mics sound when he plays, and his fooling around is better than anything I've ever played...
Thomas, thank you for being so cool with the info. You are a nice MONSTER. Now I need to hydrate so that I can watch you kick it. Thank you BRO.
Genius! Gives your toms that movie score appropriate taiko drum sound. Blend that with external mics for attack and you've got yourself an amazing sound!
I agree, there is way too much stick attack so it just sounds artificial and weird. But as stated in the video, there is no EQ so a bit of cutting down on the clippiti clap frequencies and this should sound great.. :)
Hey Thomas I'll take a couple of those series 9000 bass drum pedals off your hands! Lol!
The whole point is to blend the two mic's before the desk/mixer. No EQ needed, you get the sound by blending the two sources and adjusting the mic position so little or no processing is needed. The blend modules are primarily designed for 2 mic's on one drum (snare top/bottom or kick inside/outside) and after blending you can always EQ/compress and process if needed. You can even blend toms (2 high and 2 low ones together) if you don't mind reducing panorama/spread from 4 to 2 positions.
Damn! I love this character sound! power full and shit! I love it
Awesome garage!!!
Joey needs a shave and shower... LOL
Couple of points to add:
1) Another benefit of the May system that is worth mentioning is it protects the investment you have made in your microphones by protecting them from damage from stick hits or other equipment hitting them and any external contaminants (water, smoke, beer, etc.), or from loss or even theft (for example at a performance)
2) Randy May himself recommends the Audix d4/d6 configuration as a standard (including using the d6 in floor toms). However, based on one's FT sizes, personal preferences, and how you incorporate floor toms in your playing, the d4 mic may be a better option, especially since its freq. response profile is closer to zero overall than that of the d6 which has peaks in the highs and lows (which is perfect for bass drums, but may not necessarily be for floor toms).
Beyond that, Thomas, you're just utterly amazing. Thanks for doing this video.
Man, those kick drums sound so fucking sweet!
Great vid. Funny and great drumming too. Around 5:50 it shows his shoes. I can see they're Nike but can't tell anything else. Was wondering if anyone knew what they were. Thanks and keep on watching the DRUMINATOR.
Salute from ARUBA ! caribbean island !
I cut a drum key to be able to fit in a drill. Best thing ever for taking off drum heads.
Hallo Tom !
That's why Thomas is so great on drums, he eats Haribo Gummi Bears!
Stick Trix Thomas, do you find any difference in tone since the air isn't allowed to escape via the air vent (since it's being occupied by the XLR male connector)? That would be my worry. I would think that the lack of air escape might raise the pitch of the drum and also add some unwanted overtones. I didn't really hear that in your drumming but I didn't know if you already accounted for that in the tuning. Thanks for your time.
I believe that connector still allows the air to vent
I was wondering this as well. Imo vent holes serve an important purpose and is dumb to seal them up with a mount. However, I'm sure this wasnt overlooked in the design process
The plugs still allow the air to escape efficiently.
I like the attacks in the tom is amazing!!!
a little Loc-tite on those inside mounts will keep everything nice and snug. Remember , it's a drum that you're hitting, vibration and transport, gonna happen. Lock those bad boys down. I doubt you want to pull those heads just to check the tightness of the mike mount...
Tim "Herb" Alexander used the internal may miking system on Primus's Tales from the Punchbowl, really unique sound.
I dig the sounds he was getting with the external mics. The internal mics not so much. They make the drums sounds like he is dribbling basketballs on a playground. It would be interesting to see what happens when its eq'd a bit but I don't think EQ is fixing that.
very cool drum solo
favorite drummer!
the deftones = old school!
let's say for instance you have 2 bass drums, 2 mics inside through the porthole and a limited amount of channels on your desk. You put the 2 bass drum mics through the blend module and then straight into the mixer. Now if the bass drums are tuned roughly the same you shouldn't have problems with eq or compression or gate. (just an idea)
when u have a DW collector series in ur home studio and a DW concept series in ur garage !
That sounds awesome man.
Mother of god... Sounds AMAZING
I absolutely love your playing!
I like it like that. Tune yours down man.
DW sells them and also installs them in your drums if you like.
I wish my garage looked like that.
and a decent kit too
Not as bad as people are saying. I think this method would be more suited to drummers who trigger and don't want any cross-talk.
His drum tech has to have the coolest job
Damn, you should direct movies too!
Where are the drums micd solely with the internal micing system, or were external mics used on each drum?
Pretty awesome! I love the low-end that these mics give you from inside the drum! So essentially, in the snare, you pointed the internal downwards and you put an external for the beater head? Also the rest of the externals is on the kicks, overheads and room ambience?
I really hope you do another video with these internal microphones! With eq and also with a song if you can. I want to get some but they are pricey af and want to hear if it’s worth the investment. Sounds really beefy in this video though! Also you are just the freakin best!
The kick drums have intense attack because the mics pick up the impact through the shell as well, in addition to the air vibrations of the head.
I like the toms the most, the bass drum is alright (especially for metal) but I don't personally care for the snare sound.
THAT SNARE IS BAD ASS!!!
I need a 6x14'' Drum Workshop snare!!!
I actually like the sound.
I feel like micing these drums both inside and outside would really give a powerful something sound
If my garage looked like his garage, I would be one happy guy.
awesome but the mix I don't like on the Tom's only the Kick and snare drum sound good to me
What about the vent-hole ? It need to be free to expulse the air, isn't it ?
I believe the mount through the vent hole has vents through it, so air can still escape even though there's a cable plugged in.
The problem is that I have a DW Design Series 5-piece set. The existing air hole grommet is too small to allow the May sytem wires to go through and the May XLR to be attached. You have to remove the existing DW air hole grommet, BUT,...you can't remove it because the outside turns when try to remove the bolt on the inside...WTF? The May system is specifically endorsed by DW and they have a set of drums that can't accept the May system. I"m crying foul., How can I remove the existing air-hole grommet?
Love the MAY system. But I cant find that bassdrum mount, way better then the solated version. You have a type number Thomas?
Sweet kit dude
Say what you want, BUUUUT
the longer the bass drum the better it sounds 💯
When they went to the store I thought “wait there’s no mask- OOH it’s 2012 for them”
Hahaha it's like blast from the past
Hi Thomas, why didn't you continue recording your drums in this way? In more recent video's I didn't see you record like this? I'm asking because I just bought at short stack DW kit with internal mics.
I'm not Thomas, sorry, but I think I can answer that one, MAY doesn't support all mics in the market, just a few, for example, they don't support the Audix i5, the only snare drum mics they support are 2 sennheiser models and 1 shure which is the xl57sd.
Hope I helped with that =]
what if you needed to adjust the microphone? I think that is a weird idea the whole internal miking thing. It still requires wires and every time you want to make an adjustment you would have to take off the drum head. I dont get it
Som de bateria MARAVILHOSO
You plugged your air vents though. Doesn't that mess with the drum sound?
dude, the drill thingy was da shitz!
This video inspired me to make a mod on my drum.. A cheap version that is on video in youtube, but sounds cool.
But I didn't point the mic to the center, because it sound like a beach ballon :P
the only drummer ik with an evil tom and musky hi hats lol
I already have all the audix mics I need for my toms, bass, etc... Do they sell just the mounts so that I can put my own mics on there or do I have to buy a whole new mic with it as well?
The mics are cut and customer fitted to the shock mounts. I am not sure Randall May will retrofit your existing kick mics, but it might be work asking as long as you don't mind them modifying the microphones. I would reach out to MAY directly to see what's possible.
Nice I'm gonna do that to my drums
amazing...
What Bass drum heads are thosen the battaer side? Never seen Remo's with the thick black border. almost looked like EMADs.
powerstroke pro
What was the drum techs tatoo? I think I had the same motive on a t shirt once
so if he uses bass drum mics for his floor toms what does he us for his bass drum
Thomas I have a question for you:
Is the sound of the drum affected on any way because of these internal microphones? Lets say that I wont use mics for playing... Thanks for your response!
Legend!!!
Ah... Good old Collins Avenue.
thumbs up if you would love to have a garage like that, filled with drums and hardware!
If you use the blend mod for top and bottom head can you just plug it into your daw or mixer??? What input do you use?
7:16 SM57 capsule xDDD good bye audix endorser (?)
Audix for some reason didn't make a small mic enclosure for the inside of the snare drum, and for the record, it's an XL57.
you're not hearing the ultimate results of the mics, he is through the headphones. You would have to check it in a live stage setting...
Hey Thomas, is this your "main" sound, as in, the way you record most often? or is this system/kit for a specific sound?
There's so much attack on that 18" FT!
Exactly. Thanks Steven! T
So you are basically plugging the drum vents.. that doesn't sound a good idea. Won't that choke the drums?
What patches do you use in the battery?
his toms are tuned perfectly!!!! nice Poon! that i like to hear !!!lol
Pale lager and gummy bears. That's what I've been missing.
Ok the drums sound amazing, how bout playing them instead of sending out messages on em.
We left the jungle long ago!
Didnt bother with the snare until 14:54................................
Lol, even the great Thomas Lang loves gummy bears.
i'd hate to know how much was paid for all those new heads put on the drums
I'm poor too... I have vintage Ludwigs and I'm perfectly happy with them :)
Oh Thomas i don't know why but first I read that you will be explaining how you install internal milking system. That would be interesting :D
Nice!
I may have missed this answer somewhere, but the randallmay website doesn't offer that adjustable post for the kick. Where could I find that?
Yes they do. It's called the "Monorail"
What snare is? Thank you.
Maybe to make sure that you don't lose any small nuts or screws, if you dab a little lock tight on the nuts, it will keep them from backing off. Just an idea.
Hey, HARIBO, it's good :-)
