That was interesting, when browsing motherboards I find it often difficult to figure out the differences in features between models, even from the same manufacturer.

^ Phil's RUclips channel, he has some awesome stuff there...
Regarding feature differences... isn't that the truth! Do we really need 17 different models of motherboard from one company? Sometimes the only difference is WiFi, or the sound chip is Realtek 892 vs 887, or Realtek LAN vs Intel LAN. Minor difference to make a new board.

@@TechDeals didn't we see what 30+ boards from one of the companies, all using X570? It's stupid (and costs more too) keep the amount down, like a cheap barebones model, a good midrange and a bells n whistles board.
I am also one of those that don't get the point of wireless on a "gamer" board, we have WIRED for best latency/stability and it is a "waste of money" aka more expensive board without giving anything.
Use Realtek LAN on the cheapo board, then Intel LAN on the midrange and top range board and so on and for gods sake put proper VRM heatsinks on, they could do it in the 90's with nice fins and they look nice too, now they are alu vedges covered in plastic (we are finally beginning to see proper heatsinks again

@@LiLBitsDK The X570 customer being very different to the mainstream Ryzen customer, they have money and will spend, so it is worth the speculation on motherboards because if you win that battle you will get a name for yourself across all Ryzen 3000 boards and that goodwill will last a while. So they are realising lots of boards to see what sticks. It will calm down and some of those boards won't be around for long. With the cheaper boards it is different as those customers may not upgrade as they don't need to because even a R1 board will supportR3 in many cases. That said there isn't much SFF/ITX for the R3, probably because of the VPN thing.

@@TechDeals Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me out here, I was thing of buying a new board to upgrade from my 2013 build. (I5 3470 and z68 gd80) To a modern one, I was browsing for new motherboards when I came with 4 potential solutions.
      1. Was a z370 killer sli from asrock, at an incredible 103 dollar price brand new.
      2. Was an msi z370-a pro at 115$ brand new aswell.
      3. Was an asrock z370 pro4 at 119$
4.And last but not least, within my 130$ budget for a motherboard, was the asus prime p-II at 124$
Of course there was the msi tomahawk at 140, but I don´t think I will be getting that one.
So can anyone share a bit of advice and suggest me what would be the best option you would consider? Thanks in advance.
If there is a particularely good motherboard out there that you would reccomend within 140-150$ price point im all open, but only if you feels like it is really good.

I did some research after buying those componends and there are quite a lot of videos saying that the 9600k is not the best CPU to buy. but after some research, the 9600k is still 2,8% faster on average than the i7-8700k in the usual benchmark games as of right now, and it's a lot cheaper! so i'm quite happy for someone finally confirming that 9600k + Z390 is a solid build :)

Bottom line is that for R5 2600 build pricing I got the i7 8700 at it's most optimal setting and it's enough gaming CPU to *fully* drive my GTX 1080 Ti therefore I feel it was the best value all around.

I just upgraded someone from a z270 board with i5 7400 and a gtx 1060 3gb. He bought a 9900K, EVGA 2080TI Dark, Coolermaster Masterliquid Maker 92, 32GB G.Skill 3600mhz CL19, gigabyte z390 gaming X. I swapped out cpu/motherboard/ram/video card, and booted up to his existing windows 10 install, activated itself with absolutely zero fuss, just clicked activate windows. GOOD 2 GO
I was hoping he's pick up an Aorus Master, but I don't think he really cares and he does not like RGB (either do I). Seems like the i9-9900K was fine and the RAM clocked to 3600 just fine.
Tech, I think if you are buying an Intel, its very wise to jump right into the Z390 at this point. Maybe if you bought an i3 or something you might want less, but honestly if you are buying i3 or i5 you are buying the wrong CPU and should be buying Ryzen.
ALSO, 9900 non-k is out in the retail channel, thoughts?

ASRock Z370 Extreme4 and K6 are great budget Z370 boards.
For Z390, I'd go with either Aorus Elite, Aorus Pro or Aorus Ultra, depending on your budget. They have the same (decent) VRM, the difference is in connectors and bells & whistles. Z390 Aorus Pro WiFi is what I consider a sweetspot, a good, well rounded board that's not too expensive.
If you're into SFF like me, ASRock has the best ITX boards for intel (Z series, at least). Both Z370 Fatal1ty Gaming-ITX/ac and Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac are the best Intel ITX boards right now. Gigabyte's and MSI's Z390 ITX boards are very good too.
I would skip Asus, as they're simply overpriced while offering nothing worth the price difference over competition, unless you aim for the top tier boards. Their highest tier mobos are still great, even if expensive.

I'm finding the reason I'm considering upgrading isn't directly CPU performance related but more because my hardware is showing it's age, especially feature wise. My i5 4670 and GTX 1060 can still play new releases at 1080p on medium or high settings but as games get larger in size, even games loaded from my SATA SSD can have significant load times and my only options to reduce that time are to switch to NVMe, which my motherboard doesn't support and because it's getting old, now would be a good time to upgrade, while the hardware I have is still worth something on the used market.

However when the time comes to upgrade, will the PCIe limitation of the h310 affect the performance of a higher end GPU? I installed a 2666mhz stick of RAM on a 4-core i3-8100 and B360 motherboard. RAM could only go up to 2400mhz after turning XMP profile. My current build is a 5820K with a Gigabyte X99 SLI, because of the various boards that I could afford for the platform, it was one of the few where I noticed that the available PCI-E lanes weren't suddenly disappearing if I needed to use a 28-lane cpu; far too many for the X99 platform, regardless of price, did this... like they basically expected people to only ever choose a 40-lane chip or something. I wasn't expecting to upgrade, but I'm approaching this from the inverse.
My former main pc, which was on a 680i sli motherboard, had died, and because I had lifetime warranty, I was issued a replacement of a z370 Classified K. Unfortunately, life kind of got in the way, and I've not even been able to get a CPU yet for it. I'm more or less wondering, what kind of CPU to go with for it... because off the top, I could either go with an 8700K, and entertain doing the de-lid and a direct die mount to get better thermals, or try and scrimp to get a 9900K, and just find a shop locally (if not the same place) to help me update the bios for the board to accept the new CPU. TD, if you were in my situation, for the money, what would you do and why?

While Gigabyte's H boards do not have all the myriad of detailed overclocking options their Z boards do, they can be decently overclocked! The included, Gigabyte Easy Tune software, can run your CPU at least 0.6 GHz faster than stock. Intel eXtreme Tuning Utility, can do even more, if your cooling solution is adequate - massive compared to the stock cooling solution.

You are by far one of the best computer component reviewer on RUclips! I love that you are realistic and state both the pros and cons and give recommendations based on use cases and budgets. This video really helped me as a first time builder. I think it would be interesting to compare the value of building a system that will require and upgrade in 6 years to a system that will need update in 3 years and see what is the most cost efficient in the long run. Perhaps it is better to go for the high end combo of i9 9900K and RTX 2080Ti compared to going with lower end options and having to replace them twice in the same period? If you also bring the topic of resource scarcity for rare earth metals that are so very needed to build computer parts it could also make more sense from an environmental perspecitve to build a system that lasts a long time compared to a system that needs to be upgraded relativiely soon.

    Hi Tech Deals! thank you for this video, highly informative, as always. This gave me a better insight when it came to boards and processors, however;
I'm planning to build a PC from scratch and I want to keep my budget within $1500-1700 range. I'll use this PC mainly for gaming in 1080p and 144 fps, and I'll only max out my cash for directly gaming-related parts.
I'm thinking of Buying a B360M motherboard paired with an i7-8700(not planning to overclock), along with an RTX 2070 super. (I currently use an i5-4570 on an Asus B85M-G with a GTX 1060)
Should I still upgrade my motherboard to the Z series even if I'm not planning to overclock? My perspective on mobos is that I just need 4 USB slots, minimum. I want this gaming setup to last me at least 5-7 years without any issue. Thank you very much for your help.

I know that DDR5 is coming out pretty soon, but I hear that it's going to be kinda expensive. I'm hoping to build a new pc in September 2020. I'm still trying to figure out whether to stick with Intel, frankly because I'm a bit more familiar with than AMD, but I'm not against getting Ryzen.
I'm not looking for absolute best, but I don't want to go in the wrong direction either. I would love to have some of your assistance in choosing parts. I'm looking at either i7 or Ryzen 7. Thank You!

I haven't watched the video yet, but I bought the GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS Ultra and have had no issues with it thus far. I really recommend a sound card, like a Sound Blaster Z or something. The onboard sound is just meh and scout mode is godlike when it comes to directional hearing in games like CSGO. Using Gamezero headset paired with everything :). The interface of the mobo was easy enough to get around once I learned a few things, but no issues at all. It easily OC'd my 8700k with no issues to 5 with a 120mm all-in-one water cooler... Built my PC in March by the way, so it is still early in the life of my build

Hey Mr. Deals! If you were to build an SFF gaming PC today in which your cooling was limited, would you go with an i7-8700 on a H370 board, or get an i9-9900K on a Z390 and dial its performance back to where you can keep it cool? Will the i9 yield enough extra oomph in this use case to warrant the extra cost?

@@bars2585 I went with the MSI MPG Z390M Gaming Edge AC. I like the amount of USB ports it has compared to other boards that were available at the time. It's served my needs very well, so I would recommend it if you can find one.

just built a i3-9100 with ASRock B365M April 2020 from newegg for less than $200. Runs cool and World of warcraft great plus 95% of other games listed on "Can you run it"
i got the "ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce® GTX 1650 SUPER™ OC Edition 4GB GDDR6" for $160 on amazon and 8 gigs of ram. i had the SSD so the system only cost me about $500 total
lots of room to upgrade the CPU to an i9-9900 later when they get around the 200 range.

Hey Phil, sort of broad question here, but I’m planning on building a new gaming pc in about 2-3 years, and I was wondering what you (or anyone else here who knows) think I should buy for a cpu. I was looking into the i7-9700K, but now I’m not sure after hearing what you said about more threads from the 8700K. One of the games I’m definitely trying to gear my rig towards playing well is the Witcher 3. Also, bc this is a future build, do you think its worth looking into the i9-9900K for my cpu instead? I know the price right now for it is way higher than what I’m willing to pay for a cpu, but do you think it ls price will decrease within the next 3 years to where it might be around the mid-$300 level? I know thats probably wishful thinking but I cant help but wonder. Thanks!

Easy, just pick the H370 as the base, the H310/B360 are nothing. The jump from H310 to B360 is not much (except for the PCIE 3.0 chipset support). Plus, H370 and up has RAID support.
Most of the Z-series decent entry boards, are decent for non-OC situations.

I'm not spending the $$$$ on Intel when AMD will do it for 1/2 :) nope... However... if Intel get's their head out of their ass and drops their pricing, then maybe I'd consider it. So happy with my investment into Ryzen 2 years ago.
