Thanks for leaving that in! I remember watching Bob Ross videos. Watching him paint "Happy little clouds" always made me feel like I should be able to paint too. It turned out that I couldn't paint to save my life, but it was a good feeling watching him. Your videos are the same. I love watching your videos. And they make me feel like I should be able to run "happy little stills".
The Gert distillation guide says to add the alcohol just as the water disappears into charcoal. If you let the water clear the bottom of filter you are allowing air to be introduced into the charcoal. Thank you for your videos!

I never thought about the temporary joints from the first videos on filtering. Attempt 1, lots of leakage, "oh well". Attemp 2, I wrapped teflon tape and it holds very well, separates easy and the stuff is cheap enough to not get my nickers bunched. Just my two cents. - Jim
Hello George. I'm cuffed to the single malts. I love a true Whisky, wich is nearly perfect when it runs out of the Parrot. I'm no friend of polishing and filtering. A good product has got to be perfect after sleeping three years and one day in a barrel! after all the options this theme includes, we should ask our self, do we wanna have some shiny synthetical spoiled chemistry, or do we love a fine distilled dram? If i need to " polish " it, i've definatly did something wrong in an earlier process! ;) Happy distilling.

Not of you. Of the public school system.. if any of my teachers were as captivating as you.. I'd have a phd at this point.. you could teach me shakespeare and I'd ace it. As always, we (as a community - but especially me) are sincerely thankful for the time you put into this. I honestly didn't know how much work it really was until we started cutting vids and it's insane the amount of takes, re-takes, editing, transferring, uploading, describing etc... i have been distilling for a hobby and it is really enjoyable i have learned alot from your videos thank you next summer i am gonna try a huckleberry shine so far ive done apple and elderberry and was very good the show moonshiners got me to try it but i had to learn how to do it from you

Looking forward for part three... I learned that the carbon is good to filter heads and co, so it shouldn't matter if the spirit is diluted or not. As for the tails - how about using bigger grains to filter that out? and can the carbon affect the taste of the spirit by making it taste like carbon?

At first I thought the wax was pure genius, and it may well be but your "accident" (and yes I get it that in trying to rush things you didn't let the "concoction" cool down enough) shows me that here in Australia, where the ambient temperature could easily be 40+C, it may be a problem LOL. Loyal Subscriber! How about a few wraps of PTFE tape on each inner pipe? Filtering makes sense given that heads will smear throughout the run: they don’t all get left behind in the Heads cut.

George , long time fan. First time question. I just finished distilling some rum. What if I was to reuse what’s left over to replace the water in my next batch of sugar shine run. Said another way, when the spirit stops coming out of the bottom do I have all of my spirit or is some trapped in the column? Got in my mind when you mentioned that the water was pushed out by the spirit at the beginning of the process.
Finish with water... It will push the remaining alcohol in the carbon down. Just make sure you taste test it to know when to cut it off. I think he covered this in part 1.
@@trthib72 My thinking is maybe cut it first if the water is not great. Polish water and distillate simultaneously. I use clean and tasty water to cut, so maybe just polish spirit.
george this information you're sharing is worth more than a university course. i wonder how the distilling schools feel about your open sourcing channel haha. but as a glass and cork fanatic as well as an initiate of the cult of beeswax i wish you had demonstrated making this with your glass column and beeswax, instead of pvc and pariffin wax. i believe you about pvc, but i am much more skeptical of the pariffin. sorry im actually only 8 minutes in, going to finish watching the rest of this awesome video thank you for not waiting to upload it asap i love you
A little off this topic, but before I order a SSR for my heating needs I see different lettering behind SSR 40 DA, SSR 40 DA H, SSR 40 DD, SSR 40 VA, and I think I came across one SSR 40 AA. Could you explain the difference between the last two letters designation? The DA, DD, VA?
DA Is DC voltage to control AC output, DD is DC voltage to control DC voltage and AA is AC voltage to control AC voltage. The VA model is variable to control AC output.

When you F up, you show it and maybe save someone from doing the same. I see the talk on some forums, with critique, and "opinions"....but not the as much EFFORT to eduacate, in general. You TRY your best to do the reading/learning and condense it for the average person in the community to understand. Not allways 100% correct but you challenge the people to read the same for themselves to comprehend, corroborate, and if in disagreance to comment in a civil manner. 🖒🖒🖒 Then we all learn!
Hi new to the distilling game just got my first pot what is the best way to clean it after using it and is there anything that different I will need to do for its first run thanks
so instead of adding an extra 50% water after I distill then filter it, I should add that water to filter 1st then add the distilled alcohol before the water finishes running through... does high 60% alcohol content filter as good as 40%
George, although ethanol doesn't attack PVC plenty of the other chemicals present in the distillate do and that's not to mention the wax and glue that you are using. Given the whole point of the exercise is to filter out non-ethanol molecules then we are expecting there to be other organic chemicals in there, and yes, a lot of these do degrade PVC. Acetone being a prime example, people might well filter heads and fores without realising. Just look down the list of chemicals that PVC isn't resistant to and you'll notice that a lot of them are the by-products of distillation. It's just not worth the risk especially given how cheap and easy it would be to make this out of stainless steel.

I've been looking for activated carbon stone 20/50 mesh on Amazon and can only find fish aquarium carbon stones can they be used ?

If its gonna happen it will happen. The candle wax in those can be a bit melty at body temp so even the slightest warmth will do it

George, although ethanol doesn't attack PVC plenty of the other chemicals present in the distillate do and that's not to mention the wax and glue that you are using. Given the whole point of the exercise is to filter out non-ethanol molecules then we are expecting there to be other organic chemicals in there, and yes, a lot of these do degrade PVC. Acetone being a prime example, people might well filter heads and fores without realising. Just look down the list of chemicals that PVC isn't resistant to and you'll notice that a lot of them are the by-products of distillation. It's just not worth the risk especially given how cheap and easy it would be to make this out of stainless steel.
