I can't believe they're not brewed with rice...this was what made them Japanese and gave them their unique profile. To use corn starch Asahi is really a Mexican cervesa!
3-4 years ago Asahi used to be way better and had that real dryness to it. Being brewed by birra peroni it tastes more and more like peroni now, no real dryness and of course abv has dropped from 5.2% to 5.0%. Sick of them ruining good beer
I had a bottle of Asahi(bottled) a few months ago, took one sip of it and it tasted vile, slung the rest of bottle down the sink but just to make sure i opened a second bottle of Asahi and again it tasted vile so slung that bottle aswell! Years ago Asahi tasted dry it was a very enjoyable beer, its dryness was its big appeal but the stuff now is a shadow of its former self so much so that i will never buy it again.
I just make a point of voting with my feet & boycotting them the moment the percentage drops (if not before - it's usually a very bad sign when production moves location from the home country). Always plenty of other beer out there
When I first saw Sapporo about 30 years ago, it came in a can from which the whole lid was removed creating a pint glass-like container for drinking from.
I went to the original Asahi brewery in Suita, Osaka, the other week. Far better from the bar at the end of the museum tour, as you'd expect from the horse's mouth - the head retention was incredible for a lager. The Italian stuff you get in Tescos isnt too bad though, especially now that I have a proper Asahi glass hehe.
I had a pint in Manchester back in 2014 at a sushi bar it was so nice. Fast forward and over Covid, it was my drink of choice. however, a few years back, i had a drop, and it tasted horrible wont drink it out of a can or bottle. Its now served in pubs and its hit and miss
Sapporo Premium Beer is made up of malted barley, water, yeast and hops. Asahi Super Dry ingredients from barley, hops, rice, corn, starch. I'd prefer the Sapporo.
The Asahi uses Saaz hops like your Czech Pils you reviewed recently so might taste familiar. Sapporo uses a hop they developed for themselves called Sorachi Ace. I enjoy both but would choose Sapporo for that unique Japanese taste. I did think both used Rice somewhere in the brew so interesting if they don’t when brewed overseas. Cheers!
Not even close taste to a czech lagers. Asahi is just a typical thin continental piss water with disgusting chemical aftertaste. I don't trust that they really use czech Zatec hops anymore. You would never get this unpleasant chemical sort of bitterness in czech beers.
You got it right the first time, it is Asahi Super DRY. Asahi owns Peroni so makes sense they would use them to brew their own beer for distribution to the west. In the US, it’s all brewed from Italy.
Kirin Ichiban has been more than 30 years in the Japanese beer market. Before that, Kirin Lager was dominated beer market in Japan. If you can get it in UK, please make the beer review video. Cheers!
for this summer i ordered a case of asahi, sapporo and kirin all not brewed in japan anymore for the european market. for me kirin is the worst while sapporo and asahi is very close with asahi edging it out for me (it is just cleaner). but i gotta say i remember asahi being dryer than it is now and thus having a cleaner taste. guess it is only a matter of time until i need to drop it now.
Greetings from Motherwell, Scotland, UK. Been watching this channel for a wee while now and its a tremendous show. I agree with most of your obvs.......we must have the same palate 😂. I also rememberthe sapporo had a lid that ripped right off, leaving a beer goblet.
What a real eye opener & absolute bummer!. Until your Vs series came along I never really paid attention to Licenced Brewing but now I'm slightly paranoid, have I ever tasted the real deal?. Beck's, Carlsberg, Heineken, Stella Artois, Kingfisher Larger, Tiger Beer Lager and probably many others that I thought were imports are just local licenced brews 😡
Colonel Mustard, in the library with a can of Sapporo! I love Sapporo and i do like Asahi but i find it a little dry tasting for me personally. Hello from Bridgend!
Tesco seems to be the only supermarket that stocks Sapporo. It may not be brewed in Japan but it’s always great. Wagamamas used to sell it, not any more.
Wow, I'm impressed how you remember that South Korea did really well in the 2002 World Cup. Thank you for the reminder of the great memory as a South Korean man. lol Though I have Japanese Katakana characters in my name. lol
Appreciate this comparison. Haven't had Sapporo for "donkey's years", think I got a Japanese original one to try from a specialist "Offy" in Lincoln around '80 or '81 and they still had the pint shaped tin back then. The Asahi is interesting as I believe it's now available on draught in Fullers pubs as they now own the brewing side of Fullers. Don't think the Chiswick brewery would have the capabitilty to brew a decent lager. They should just stay with the nectar that is ESB!
Here in America Sapporo Premium (silver can) is brewed with rice, Sapporo Reserve (gold can) is all malt. I had both of these beers ( Sapporo Premium and Asahi Super Dry) and I prefer Sapporo over Asahi.
I had the 660 mil ashai from a corner shop the other day. It was truly awful. 99% of ashai I have is absolutely lovely. What could ruin the taste like that from the corner shop one?
If there's malted barley in the recipe, the starch will be converted to alcohol anyway. Maybe a cheap way to boost ABV without adding flavour. Rice substitute perhaps?
Does Sapporo beer have rice in it? Answer. Many popular Japanese beers like Sapporo, Kirin, and Asahi are rice-based, and even Budweiser uses rice along with barley in its brewing process. Sapporo Premium Beer is made up of malted barley, water, yeast and hops.
Took your advice, I've ordered myself some German beers from Beers of Europe. I'm planning to work through the full range of 173! Disappointed how many Workd beers are fake.
There is / was a Asahi flag flying behind the London Pride brewery in London and funny enough i like both Asahi and London Pride ,,,not had Sapporo for a few year's i get a can 🍻
Please use identical glasses for the comparison videos. The battles are interesting but would be better if you were to use identical glasses. Also, don't use the regular dishwasher to clean your beer glasses 🍺
_It was only the Polish beer I reviewed that's actually brewed in Poland_ This is why I drink Polish beer. As usual I switched this off the moment Si started using super- as an intensifier so I'll have to wonder for evermore which one won but I wasn't arsed with this one anyway 🤣
I prefer the Sapporo its very balanced and sophisticated
Why are people giving this the thumbs down? His opinion and very honest. I would love to see four or five supermarket ports taste tested.
Probably because he got his world cup facts wrong lol.
There isn’t a number sowing the thumbs down anymore
@@louisbeerreviews8964 There's a browser extension available that lets you see them again 😉
Supermarket ports, I like that
I can't believe they're not brewed with rice...this was what made them Japanese and gave them their unique profile. To use corn starch Asahi is really a Mexican cervesa!
Could be the reason asahi taste different now
Japanese origin beers brewed with rice other countries brewing the brands not likely so sellers can make cash selling it for export

I noticed the same. Used to be very dry and crisp and stronger. Now it’s pants

Always plenty of other beer out there
@@wirralchapit’s nice it’s just you
@@louisbeerreviews8964I loved the authentic version, but the asahi brewed here is shite.
Drink Asahi quite a lot, 4 bottles for £4 at local offy. Perfect for when I've finished work at 11pm and just want something refreshing.
When I first saw Sapporo about 30 years ago, it came in a can from which the whole lid was removed creating a pint glass-like container for drinking from.
It's one of those things I sort of remembered but I wasn't sure thanks for confirming it
They still sell cans like that in japan

Like the Asahi. Haven’t tried the Sapporo and will give it a go.
Hitachino Nest was the nicest beer I tried when I visited Japan, particularly the red rice ale. I think Waitrose have stocked them in the past.

used to drink sapporo in the Hacienda when the whole lid came off the tin - not seen it for decades
I used to like kirin ichiban when Morrisons used to sell it. Can't really find it now.

Quilmes lager from Argentina is definitely brewed in Argentina. Such an awesome lager Simon. Do give that a try

I can only find it in tesco lol there always low on stock aswell it's a great beer
Yay, I would go Sapporo every time ! 😃
Semi finals they got to Simon , managed by Gus hiddink, good side

Thank you for the reminder of the great memory as a South Korean man. lol

South Korea finished 4th and Japan last 16.
Dig that Hop Back glass. Such a cool, old-school logo amidst all the modern minimalist designs out there.
I agree with your decision… Both are nice beers, it really depends on the individuals taste. My Dad always liked a dry beer.
My dad liked ALL beer.
Only Japanese beer for me is Kirin Ichiban - so crisp
Sapporo I noticed 2 sellers on Amazon one can is 4.7% other is 5% but the 5% is a larger can size

Sapporo in Vietnam or Korea?

Any chance you could review some of your older reviews like the kernel innit and gunn you get more views now so not many would have seen your opinion.
Skinners is another one that you reviewed years ago
Have you tried Brewdogs Mr President. 4 quid in tesco. Over 9%, decent brew
I'm sure Asahi is 5.2 from Japan. Pretty sure it a was a better beer before too!
Shouldn't really compare cans to bottles. They are certainly different in this case.
Sapporo can suck it for sinking Anchor Brewery. Will be avoiding their beer. Asahi Super Dry is actually a great beer.
hear hear
Big shame that Anchor are no more
I used to like the Asahi super dry Black you can’t find it anymore
Why on earth mixing in Corn Starch?
If there's malted barley in the recipe, the starch will be converted to alcohol anyway. Maybe a cheap way to boost ABV without adding flavour. Rice substitute perhaps?
cheap
They both taste immeasurably better draft. But I guess that’s the case with most beers!
I like both these beers but the sapporo is a bit on the sweet side for me

The Japanese know how to brew and serve great mass lagers. They care about the detail.
Asahi ABV been nerfed last couple of year and the taste has suffered. Still acceptable, but not superb.
It’s not Brewed in Korea Si.
Thought he said Sapporo was brewed in Vietnam . When he poured it he said Korea ? Take your pick .
@@alanthomson1227i live in Korea but have never seen a Korean brewed Asahi. Pretty sure it's Vietnam

The carbonation on the sapporo was clearly terrible. It's not a good beer.

Me and my mates sometimes drink Asahi Karakuchi as a bit of a ritual in the sauna. Karakuchi in my regional dialect means "The man dick".
Sapporo Brewed in Vietnam not Korea lol

Hate all these ABV's being lowered. Swear Asahi was 5.2% and Peroni was 5.1%
