I used to work with, (30 yrs ago) a Yorkshire chef, 8 stone wet through, who lived in at the hotel we worked at. He was known to order 8 pints of beer, carry them up to his room and then stay up most of the night drinking them. This reminded me of that

The first filtered lager was Spaten in 1878. Pilsner Urquell had introduced the industrial cooling system earlier, which made the modern bottom-fermentation possible. Seeing this success, Georg Sedlmayr persuaded Carl Linde to install it in his brewery in Munich as well. But he wasn't sure the conservative Bavarians, who were used to the dark beers would like the pale one, so he tested his brand new bottom-fermented, filtered pale lager in Hamburg. The seamen liked it, and the Munich Helles was born. The rest is history :)

Great selection, I think I'd agree with all of them, especially the Belgian ones. I think the "Best beer in the world" you were thinking of was "Westveleteran 12" which is a Monk brewed beer and has close ties to the St Bernardus brewery which is just down the road from the Westveleteran Abbey. Both are definitely worth a visit, especially St Bernardus which has a guest house and restaurant at the brewery which I went to this year and stayed at with a few mates. Those are all very good supermarket macro beers, though the type of beers on display are all over the place. I'd have went with a top 3 per category, so just 1 Weizen in the ranking isn't doing it for me. When it comes to Weizen, I like Ayinger Brauweiss the most, it's simply the best out of mulitiple face-offs that I did. Closely followed by Andechs and Jacob Weissbier. Of the macro brands Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and Hacker Pschorr are the best. But few supermarkets sell those, let alone all year around.
So, under the condition of "must be available in most supermarkets", here in NL, I'd go for the Grolsch Weizen as my favourit. Followed by Paulaner, Benedikter and Fransikaner. Those would be my top Weizen that you may find in most supermarkets. Ranking around 8,5-9 out of 10. For 9,5-10 out of 10, the smaller breweries take the crown though.
PS: Simon, you're stil butchering "(Deutsche) Reinheitsgebot", or a bit hammered already? Lol. --> Ry-n + hi +ts + ge/ke-bot

The head stays & the creamy mouth feel is second to none, also when poured it yer got to hold on for the froth to come out of the top. The Monk on the front drinking out of a jug makes me think that back in day about 800 years ago they saw it as a food

  • @dampaul13

While St Bernardus did make Westvleteren 12, and ABT 12 uses the same recipe, there are differences, most notably the yeast.
It's reported that St Bernardus still uses the original Westvleteren yeast, while Westveltern uses Westmalle yeast (as do many Belgian Trappist beers).
Equipment and fermentation/maturation times/conditions can also have an impact.
Much of the fanfare around Westvleteren 12 was its scarcity and the stories of acquiring the beer. And the cost on the secondary market.
In saying that, having tried both beers in comparative blind tastings in a range of ages, I've chosen Westvleteren 12 pretty much every time.
Although ABT 12 Nitro at the brewery is incredible.
Really, there is only one Quad, the La Trappe Quadrupel (10%), as it's the trademarked brand name.
All beers within that style, including La Trappe Quad, would have been traditionally characterised/called 'Strong Belgian Dark.'
(Yes, yes, I know it's from the Netherlands)
We also have to remember that Belgium doesn't/didn't really think about beers within style guidelines, as we do now.
That was pretty much as a result of Michael Jackson wanting to characterise/group beers through similarities.

  • @shed_dad
    @shed_dad 22 дня назад +4

I didn't know Pilsner Urquell was the first filtered beer. I know it was the first Pilsner and took its name from Plzen where it is brewed. All other Pilsner style lagers are technically descendents of this beer and prior to it being introduced beers in Europe were Helles style lagers.

Here in Finland we have pretty wide beer selections in the bigger stores, but I'd have to personally go with either Paulaner's helles or weissbier. You can get these pretty much anywhere, even the smaller corner stores, and as opposed to some of the competition, they're often sold in cans and on discount, so you get really good quality for a low-ish price.
Out of those beers you've got there on the table, I'd go with the Franziskaner. It just ever so slightly has the edge over Paulaner's helles.

Diacetyl in Urquell is a feature of the beer, when it's kept in very small amounts. There's a very fine line from where it's acceptable to where it ruins the beer, and some batches they've let it go a bit too far.

For some reason, I’m not keen on wheat based beers. Weissbier stink to me, like a wet cloth staying in the sink for days. Don’t know why. Always like lagers as a proper European and lately I found taste for some IPAs. Cheers Simon

That's a great selection you've got there. My go to IPA would be Sierra Nevada which I'm surprised is readily available. It used to be Lagunitas IPA in a bottle but it's been unavailable since Covid I believe 😟

Hi Simon, maybe a review idea that I think could be useful. Thinking with Christmas coming up I and I’m sure many people will be drinking all day starting early afternoon, so I’ll be getting a few low ABV ales and I’m thinking maybe to do a supermarket sessionable ale battle being staring for example the new Fullers Gold which is 3.4% the old session hen (which I know you rated) 3.4% and black sheep blonde 3.7% could be worth a review. Cheers keep up the content 👍🏼🍺

Duvel Triple Hop Citra is fantastic.
You poured it incorrectly though. It's not meant to be cloudy.
Ensure the bottle has been upright and not shaken for past 24 hours, to let the sediment settle. Then slowly pour (no glugs) into the glass, ensuring to leave about 1.5cm in the bottle. It will nearly be clear, taste less bitter, completely different and clean!
Try it and if you do it right, you'll be blown away!
