Six years after this performance he was found at 86 pounds. It shows how fragile human beings can be. As strong as his lyrics and voice were, one drug took all of that away. It’s hard to explain what people in that mindset mean to people and without them how we’re lost and confused. The typical human being can’t handle that pressure let alone take it serious, but we all leave a mark on this world.

Hey man just wanted to say I love your reactions..especially to AIC because they are my favorite band..but you have a gift of articulating what we feel when we listen to their music
There’s a moment, after the first falsetto where Layne looks down, he looks so vulnerable and weak, he knows the end is near. Very emotional to watch. I love this performance for so many reasons. RIP Layne.
It is impossible for anyone who wasn't alive at the time to understand how high grunge lifted us up, and later left black holes of profound loss that never stop hurting
Of all th Seattle vocalists, Layne's voice was th most emotional 4 me. Although I'm not a big PJ fan, Vedder's voice on ' Ten ' was close to perfection & really emotional, strong & rich. For me, Layne's voice jus radiated pain & that feeling of utter helplessness. There was times listening to AiC in th dark drinking beer, it literally felt like you're drowning in his pain. RIP Layne, you are always missed!
Such a great band and Layne was such a unique talent. He could make you feel the song just with his tone... I just can’t listen to these live recordings without thinking about his end, it’s always bitter sweet.
That was not Mike Starr who wrote or played bass on that song/album. That was Mike Inez. Mike Starr was kicked out of AIC prior to the Jar of Flies EP.
There are songs that I like after a few listens and there are songs I like after the first few notes. This was immediately one of those first few note type songs. It only got more amazing once the vocals came in. I was hooked from the get go.
The sound of the bass from this performance quite literally made me want to buy an acoustic bass and learn to play. I can make music on computers with software all day, but physically doing it with instruments is another story. The bass in this show is soooo deep and clean.
Damn dude. I had to stop and listen your intro three times before I got into the actual reaction. You have great timbre. So smooth. I would love to hear you cover this whole song just with guitar.
I actually own that same bass . The Alvarez AB60CE is an excellent design , it’s really deep and wide body . Mike Inez is also using a compression petal to help him out .
Heaps glad you said "that is the voice of grunge." I wholeheartedly agree. I grew up in this grunge era listening to bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but somehow Chains past me by until the late 2000's. What struck me about them from the beginning was how familiar they sounded. It almost felt like the other bands had been telling me about their dear and close friend all this time, and I finally got to meet them. And the meeting was enlightening and humbling. Like finding oneself in the presence of a true master - something one can never truly be prepared for. It also says something about the music of that time, the way all these bands were inspiring one another, and lifting each other up. Honest music is so beautiful like that. And the mastery they displayed of their craft is a privilege to experience still. Sadly, the pain of the time for them was a big part of the fuel for their expression, which breaks my heart now when I listen to songs like this one. I appreciate your video, brotha.
This was some of the music of my youth. Alice In Chains was one of the bands that broke through during the Grunge renaissance that saved us from the terrible hair band era of rock. Yet I find AICs music makes me sad these days having learned over time what a tortured soul Layne was. The greatest works of art often come from the deepest emotions felt I just wish he (and many others) could have enjoyed life more.
I also think there's so much emotion behind his voice because he knew he put the towel in at the point. He didn't want to let his band mates down but he knew. Gone to rehab several times before this and even OD'ed on their next tour. Ugh...so heavy. No one can write lyrics like that!
AIC is one of the most crucial bands to my existence this album helped me through so much in my life from addiction to just dark times in general I have "If I cant be my own id feel better dead" tattooed on my forearm in Layne's hand writing and any time I'm having a bad day I just look at it and all is well. may sound cliché to some but i just wish Layne could see how many of us fans he really helped through the battles he eventually succumbed to
Yeey more grunge munch munch! Tbh, I wasn't a huge AiC fan back in the days. I did like them, but apart from the individual hit songs distributed via MTV (yes when than channel still mainly broadcasted music) and our pop radio channels, I had never found the trigger to dig in deeper. So I didn't know much of their discography. Anyway, this is good stuff and the vibe and lyrics breathe sooo recognisably grungey. Well, to me they do. And indeed his voice is very 'own' and original. When it comes to singing, I also recognise what you're saying about the tone and vibe the grungegeneration inherited and adpoted. Mine hasn't been heard beyond the comfines of my car though. XD Thanks for sharing and your reflections on melody and the nineties. Love it.
You're talking about so many good and relevant bands for me personally.... Obviously you're the same generation as I am!!! Grunge was my awaking. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney and many others so much accompanied myself through the 90's.... I saw Alice in Chains live in Cologne in 1994!!! Unforgettable concert!!!! One of the best bands and songs you reacted to... Thanks a lot and best regards
Nutshell was about how magazines like Rolling Stone only reported on Layne's addiction as if that were the only thing that defined the band. Rolling Stone magazine has some unknown thing to do with the Hall of Fame, and after what Rolling Stone did to Layne and the band in the 1996 The Needle and the Damage Done article ("Oh no, it will be about the music" "Oh yeah, the band's picture will be on the cover" turns out it was only Layne on the cover and the article focused on Layne's addiction -- which Layne DID NOT want to happen -- and everything going wrong internally with the band.) that pissed off AIC management and the entire band to the point they threatened to kick the writer, Jon Weiderhorn's ass over it. I don't see Rolling Stone chomping at the bit to vote AIC into the Hall of Fame. Although if they do finally get in with William as the singer and NOT Layne. I'm going to be pissed. MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.
Maybe react to something from Live at the Moore concert? It's Layne at his healthiest and the entire band sounds great. I'd recommend Love Hate Love and Bleed the Freak.
Damn that beginning actually gave me chills, well done! Dunno if you have already done it but I'd definitely listen to a full cover of Nutshell by you.

I love this song and it will be played at my funeral, I can’t watch this without a couple tears falling. If you want to hear Layne before he was in AIC check out Mad Season - Wake up I promise if nutshell pulls on your heart strings wake up will yank them. ‘Slow suicide ain’t know way to go’ that line hits the heaviest.
STP isn't really grunge. It's rock n roll that got lumped into the grunge category for no other reason besides debuted at the same time. The same way they tried to lump GNR into the hair metal genre when they first debuted. I don't really consider AIC grunge either.
@@CoreyT127 Since it was the critics who popularized the term it's their box. At that time STP was put into that box. Therefore, for all intensive purposes, they are grunge. You liking it or not, or what you consider to be this or that is irrelevant.
Layne’s torment is what gave his voice that haunting quality and the writing comes from such a personal, deep and dark place. The line “if I can’t be my own, I’d feel better dead” just hits so much harder now with Layne gone. It’s weird to many I’m sure, because I never knew him, but when I heard the news that he had died, I cried. I’ve never cried for any celebrity or musician dying before or since, but Layne’s death just hit me hard. This song is one of my favorites, and their album “Dirt” is one of the few albums I’d consider to be absolutely perfect, not a bad song on it. There are very few of those out there, another that comes to mind is “Ten” from Pearl Jam.
It's hard to describe AIC's music. Dark, haunting, soothing at times. Heavy at others. Always great harmonies. Maybe a cross between Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel.

as a person who came of age at the same time as these fella's did, and was immersed in the culture as i was, you gotta know: This was nerve racking for Jerry. Nostalgic... great song...
And Boudy... you have a great voice😀
I have a confession... never was a great Alice in Chains fan... but after all these years when I hear them the songs get different meaning and perspective... love it
Jerry is still a great writer, and if you really want a punch to the gut, try Black Gives Way to Blue.
Played Black Gives Way to Blue at my dads funeral. Still cant listen to it. Amazing song tho
Man, that song makes me ugly cry.
Just heard it for the first time the other day checking out Duvall-era AIC. Definitely the gut punch you say it is. There’s something about albums that bands release after a band member dies..
@@CB_TxNole
I’m very sorry for your pain from loosing your Dad. I lost both of my sons. One to drug OD and the other to suicide. I played AIC Would? And Don’t Follow at both their funerals.
Don’t Follow took the place of a preacher. It was my message to their friends.
Layne wrote nutshell, not Jerry.
I love what you're speaking bro. You know exactly what you're talking about. I'm 42. Our influences. What we cared about. The heart we felt in it. The pain we felt in it. I'm a musician as well, and THIS song from this era punches me in the heart the most and I fucking love it because of that.
Thanks for the great reaction.
So damn true absolutely timeless that whole unplugged set was amazing. He poured everything he had into that set. Forever missed
Layne preferred speedballs. He had heroin/ meth in his system when he died. He also partook in crack. Addiction is terrible sad.
@@peggyjyoung6434 .... not the point but i get it
This performance rips my heart out every time. You are watching someone sing at their own funeral.
Yes it was. I think he knew he was going to die
. He just didn’t know when. You can tell he was in bad shape.so sad.
@Artimus Swanso
I deal with darkness and depression too.
That’s why I’m so drawn to AIC
@John Monticello
Yes it sure is! I lost one of my sons to an OD of Fentanyl and my other songs n and daughter both to suicides. I played Don’t Follow at both of my sons funerals. That was my message to their friends. I spent a lot of time listening to AIC, Chris Cornell. STP and “dark” other dark music (instead of sleeping.)
Right in the feels
Your reviews really hit home. I have seen many people review songs and all they say is "wow" or " that was amazing" "please subscribe"
You get it.
You catch the nuances and the feelings
You love this music the way we all loved this music......that is the reason I subscribed to you.
Keep up the great reviews.
Best vocals of the grunge era and best bassist as well.
but mike starr isn't in this
and drummer
Have to say, I really enjoyed watching this with you. Thanks. Look forward to more.
Man, I LOVE your commentary brother! You have so much insight
layne staley’s voice gives me goosebumps 😍😍😍😍
Cornells voice can move mountains..Stayleys can turn em into sand
@@mikeschliker5176 💯
So true Abdallah, the 90‘s Unplugged sessions transported the vibe of this decade and listening to it always pulls me back. I still recall that I taped it on VHS and played it until the cassette died... so much more gigs from then to bring up here, if you can handle it 🤘🏻
Hey man just wanted to say I love your reactions..especially to AIC because they are my favorite band..but you have a gift of articulating what we feel when we listen to their music
There’s a moment, after the first falsetto where Layne looks down, he looks so vulnerable and weak, he knows the end is near. Very emotional to watch. I love this performance for so many reasons. RIP Layne.
You have not disappointed. Purely honest and emotional reactions in the 3 I have watched. Thank you for the time you have put into these videos.
I’m still amazed how Layne walks out and sounds absolutely phenomenal the second he sits down and starts singing.
It is impossible for anyone who wasn't alive at the time to understand how high grunge lifted us up, and later left black holes of
profound loss that never stop hurting
This gave me chills, so true
Of all th Seattle vocalists, Layne's voice was th most emotional 4 me. Although I'm not a big PJ fan, Vedder's voice on ' Ten ' was close to perfection & really emotional, strong & rich. For me, Layne's voice jus radiated pain & that feeling of utter helplessness. There was times listening to AiC in th dark drinking beer, it literally felt like you're drowning in his pain. RIP Layne, you are always missed!
I remember when this Came out on Mtv. I was 19 years old. Where the hell did all the time go. Such a great time in life for me
Such a great band and Layne was such a unique talent. He could make you feel the song just with his tone... I just can’t listen to these live recordings without thinking about his end, it’s always bitter sweet.
Me too and it SUCKS!!!!!!! RIP Layne, Mike,& Chris
His falsetto is just amazing here. Can’t imagine how he was still pulling that off by then
He was always a great singer
Pure talent was the reason :-)
Really good singing+guitar playing in the intro!
Came here to see you react to the band and was blown away by your beautiful voice, you are very special!
This bassline is so incredible. there are some high notes during versus, low twangs during changes. Huge shoutout to Mike Starr
‘NUTSHELL’ was where my journey to best piece of music ever on earth.
I also think there's so much emotion behind his voice because he knew he put the towel in at the point. He didn't want to let his band mates down but he knew. Gone to rehab several times before this and even OD'ed on their next tour. Ugh...so heavy. No one can write lyrics like that!
Wow great review, you got me teary eyed at points. This music will live on forever for those who need it
AIC is one of the most crucial bands to my existence this album helped me through so much in my life from addiction to just dark times in general I have "If I cant be my own id feel better dead" tattooed on my forearm in Layne's hand writing and any time I'm having a bad day I just look at it and all is well. may sound cliché to some but i just wish Layne could see how many of us fans he really helped through the battles he eventually succumbed to
My best friend has a portrait of him on her arm and it's beautiful 😍
My first video of yours, but not the last. Excellent work. Subscribed.
One of my favs of AIC. TY for reacting. This song has no resolve to the melody, but it does. It's wild. It fades, in a nutshell. RIP Layne.
Thank you for reviewing this 💚 I haven’t listened to them for a while
Yeey more grunge munch munch!
XD
Thanks for sharing and your reflections on melody and the nineties. Love it.
I clicked on this video for the ever so sad Nutshell by Alice in Chains but dang dude, you can play and sing so well! Love your style, man!
I have watched a *lot* of reactions to this performance, and yours is top-notch, sir. Thank you.
Wow, you sounded amazing...RIP Layne, Brilliant voice is missed
No it’s not lol. Nutshell was written way before that and has to do with laynes inner demons and privacy.
@@jessepostal I was using the Rolling Stone article as an example of what the press did to Layne... dumbass.
@@jessepostal you have no CLUE what you are talking about. Layne's problems with addiction were already being covered when " dirt " came out .
Well reviewed, brother. It's as if you were speaking what my mind was thinking. 😎👍
Great reaction. Keep Alice in chains coming man
Man i have always said that this is the best unplugged of all time. This song is haunting. Great review man👏👏👏
Wow! That into to this video was beautiful!
I miss this time in my life, so many beautiful voices gone.
Addiction is no joke... I always wonder if he really knew how much he was loved, would he still be with us today.
Layne just put it out there.. zero effort.. just raw emotion.. and when jerry is next to you, nothing can go wrong.. love a.i.c.
Maybe react to something from Live at the Moore concert? It's Layne at his healthiest and the entire band sounds great. I'd recommend Love Hate Love and Bleed the Freak.

I remember reading a comment that this was like a man singing at his own funeral. Such a beautiful live album, and a true comment.
What a pleasant surprise in the beginning with u singing. You have a great voice brother!
Damn that beginning actually gave me chills, well done! Dunno if you have already done it but I'd definitely listen to a full cover of Nutshell by you.
I like how you look at things when it comes to music.. You know how to explain things for simple man kinda people to understand . KEPP UP THE HONEST HARD WORK & TRUTH
Your break down of this song truly put into words exactly what you feel within seconds of this performance.
For the love of Grunge you got my reaspect? It is incredible so many coultural diferences between us and the same love for The 90s grunge miusic.
Wow what an insightful and thought provoking reaction… How TF do you NOT have more subscribers…??? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for the intro as well!! You have a great voice!! +1 sub here, cheers brother!!
I lived i Seattle and was lucky enough to have seen the great bands of the early 90s. Layne was so sweet. Still makes me cry...
Between AiC and Nirvana, they both encompass the 90s. I had the cassette "Jar of Flies" I played it until the tape broke.
"voice of grunge" is how I've always thought of Layne, since I got this album in 1994.
Wow, you sounded great at the start there! I'd love to hear a full version of that.
❤such a beautiful song and an amazing young man, singing his heart out to us all 😢and now he’s gone ❤. He deserves all of the recognition he gets.🎉❤
Just found your channel man, I have to tell I love it.
This Song/Video is the one I always go with when I need to open the valves...
When you said "Let´s be sad together"
You got my vote!
Keep on what you´re doing, you´re doing a great job!
Cheers from Sweden!
I love this song and it will be played at my funeral, I can’t watch this without a couple tears falling. If you want to hear Layne before he was in AIC check out Mad Season - Wake up
I promise if nutshell pulls on your heart strings wake up will yank them. ‘Slow suicide ain’t know way to go’ that line hits the heaviest.
I’m really digging your channel bro! Much love from Indy bro!
Since you're into grunge, how about some Stone Temple Pilots? Creep, perhaps? Or maybe Interstate Love Song?
Plush!
@@dravenblackthorn4765 Exactly, well said
@@CoreyT127 their first album was categorized as a grunge record like it or not
Layne’s torment is what gave his voice that haunting quality and the writing comes from such a personal, deep and dark place.
Really enjoyed your reaction and great details never realized.
Wow you are one heck of a talented musician and that voice is top-notch powerful!.
Alice n Chains : Unplugged is always gonna be one of my favorite Albums... actually my top 3 albums are from the MTV Unplugged Sessions.... but Shane Staley voice speaks to your bones....
The bass guitar says “friends don’t let friends get hair cuts”
Because it was 1996.
And metallica was there....in the front row....and it was 1996....
you mean friends don't let friends get friends hair cuts
It was aimed at Metallica in good fun. They were in the audience of this performance.
Dude - NICE COVER at the beginning. LOVE IT!
Instant time travel whenever I hear this song.
I want to turn this song’s bass line and tone into a blanket so I can wrap myself up in it.
Thank you ! I appreciate your honest & soulful response to AIC . Layne was brilliant in sharing his story with everyone . His voice as you say will transcend time ,, as it already has . Again , Thank you .
May I suggest a very powerful song by AIC called , " Love, hate ,love" @ The Moore . Layne's voice is very powerful in that piece . New Sub 😀
That was bang on how i felt like a look back into times that passed and memories never forgotten. Thank you nathan cooper now i just wish my 90s haircut come back in style but the 90s music has never gone away always tbe best generation of music ever !
as a person who came of age at the same time as these fella's did, and was immersed in the culture as i was, you gotta know: This was nerve racking for Jerry. This was The moment, Jerry knew, that they will either be immortalized as true artists and not just punk grungsters. This night, Jerry was all business. No nods, no real smiles, just nervous, horribly anxious feelings that Laine was going to bring it all crashing down because it WAS A LIVE SHOW, for a video library of MtV's Unplugged series.
Man, I loved Alice in Chains so much... I hate to say, but it makes me cry to see Layne just walk out, looking f'ed up. Man, what a f'ing tragedy. On a happier note, your intro was awesome.. would love to hear a full song from you.. great playing and singing... - #10
Layne is a rock God! Jerry, Sean and Mike are Demi Gods! Pure fucking amazing talent! Layne sang circles around Chris, Eddie, Kurt .... Layne is the ONE!
Alice in chains was and still is incredible. I can relate so much to their music. When I was deep in addiction it spoke to me. It helped me because I knew someone else felt the way I do. I'm forever grateful for this band. By the way I've been sober and clean for years now. We all don't make it, RIP Layne Staley.
Damn that little slice of Nutshell was nice. You've got a great voice man. AIC are one of my favorite bands. I miss Layne. When he was alive I was always rooting for him to conquer his demons. Sadly it didn't happen but I like to think he's at peace.
