Arie was one of the best of all time. The guy really knew how to attack the Speedway.
Arie was my favorite driver back then. Really miss those days.
Great Interview with Arie, I appreciate stories such as this, it's amazing that he said he could go possibly up to 243 mph, I wonder if he meant trap speed or average. He was never concerned, that's a damn fine handling race car!
Probably an average. They hit 242 at the end of the strait away in qualifying last year
"....speaks with 1990 and 1996 Indy 500 winner....."
Er, I think you mean 1997 there. Saladbar single-handily prevented Arie from winning in '96.
Randy Dubin He got Saladbar. image if they had a 96 reynard and that ford XD engine. They probalby I'm guessing average 239. Here is a thought. it only took 8 years to pickup 16 mph. i think they broke 220 in like 1988
Your exactly right Randy. I remember when ole Saladbar flat out rammed Arie! I don't think they even black flagged that nasty SOB!
23 years and counting.
I was on my way to work at the Dana plant in fort Wayne when they were taking Scott Brayton back to Coldwater Michigan to be laid to rest ..I saw his procession with the 33 Dodge Vipers leading his Hurst and his wife and kids following..I pulled off to the side of I-69 to pay my respects and I set there and cried...it was a sad time for everyone who loves racing and in particular Indy....😢
Arie is a Indianapolis 500 ICONIC LEGEND
yes he is,
Arie is a hero. He could have won more Indy 500’s.
Good stuff, good to see Arie again.
RIP Robin Miller! Great memories brought to us by a great track side reported and person!
The Flying Dutchman... he could wheel a Champ car around Indy.
Like Greg Ray.
Still the track record holder!
RIP Scott Brayton
Arie rules!
They will never break it! Do respect to the racers of the 90's and bottomless budgets...
I miss the big crowds and excitement of pole day.
We’re so close to breaking it now thanks to Veekay.
The reason why there still hasn’t been a track records set since 1996 . Tony George is the reason why.
Many factors contributed to the record being broken and none of them had to do with the IRL whatsoever. Firstly, the track was repaved which increases speeds naturally, then they turned up the boost on old CART chassis to ensure that the record was beaten and the weather was pretty cool that day.
Can't be too cool or tires do not work.
he ran 250 on the straights to average the 236 laps...........some planes don't fly that fast
no way he went 250 down the straights
Gil de Ferran had a 241 average, supposedly did well over 260 on the straights.
Jerry Grant was doing 250 on the straights in 1972 at OMS , downforce had not been perfected yet to increase the turn speeds.
I was there the day he set it. Turn 1 paddock
I have seen his car in the Louwman Museum in The Hague.
Mike Hydropneumatic me too
26 years later and they are getting close. I believe before 2026 race we will have a new track record again.
Still haven't as of 2023 (234 mph)
1996 Indy 590 crash with Scott Brayton
1999 michigan 500 crash with Greg Moore
My wife and I watched the 1990 Indy 500 at home and she kept gushing about how good looking Arie was as the queen kept lingering on him after the kiss. I was jealous no lie.
I always handle my businesses at personal places
Once his friend Scotty died, that was the end of the INDY 500 the way we knew it.........
Scotty Brayton, RIP.
I was there.
I’m imaging Luyendyk walking around Indy in 2024 frazzled and snapping at everyone who mentions the record.
Happy bday; id as for the bench bracket;
Arie is one cool cat!
27 years and counting
How many F1 cars could run an avg lap of 235 for an hour?
I wonder what Arie could have done at Talladega with the 33% banking in the corners. We'll never know as a driver would pass out due to the unbelievable g forces.
If you guy's we're going to get into it or what not; your friend,;
Is there not video of this record setting run?

I've added the link to Arie's record qualifying run (236 mph). The 239 practice lap wasn't recorded

I wonder how fast a Formula 1 car could do it. Indianapolis is basically just a straight line in those
You are confusing high speed ovals with road course turns, very different setups, and use of drag reduction versus tire adhesion.
I'm not sure they could hold it wide open into the 90 degree turns. The forces on those somewhat delicate aero pieces could likely not survive 500 miles without breaking off.
