There is a very old video game called "Stronghold" and when you click on the "fletcher" building the sound is exactly like in 9:30. Until today I wasn't aware how it would look like. Thank you!
My friend makes bows, he uses axes, and all kinds of wood, my favorite is his native American Osage orange bows, he knows the lbs of pressure of pull back just by feeling the wood before he strings them up, and can hit bottle caps 50 foot away with them.
@@kamikaze2613 it's called a bowyer I think, but he had many talents, I should have said had a friend, he just passed away recently, and he is sorely missed. His name was Chuck housel, he was brilliant, his brother played in the NFL named John housel, but Chuck was a legend himself, just read his obituary, or Google him
I have to think about my priorities now. I have been an archaeologist for almost 30 years, the last 15 as a researcher and have almost completely forgotten why I started. Time to get back to flint knapping.
Its fascinating to me to think that the Bow was built in so many ways all over the world. It was discovered in so many countries at different times and has fed and protected us ever since. Amazing, I put it up there with the Wheel!
How did you make such an even tiller without putting it on the tree? The shape was so perfect when you put it up there, my jaw dropped! Great vid, can't wait to go and make a bow
So good to tune in to your channel again Will. It has been a while. I've been "under the pump", but I'm good to go again, thank goodness. Excellent up-load as ever was man. Very cool indeed.
Fantastic video we’re in the process of making some self bows right now but I think the kids would really enjoy doing one of these. Thanks for the details.
A few years ago we had a big yew tree fall in one of our sheep fields, so I had a go at making a long bow for myself I spent around 2 months carefully cutting and carving this lovely piece of yew I used the scraping method with a sharp blade and made a really nice long bow, I was so happy with myself if looked amazing, I even made the bow string same as you did, but when I was putting the string on my bow the bottom end snapped, I was so so gutted 😭😭
Bugger that sucks but I’m pleased to tell you that you picked one of the best but often one of the trickiest and hardest wons to master first, and snapping them often just goes with the territory don’t let anyone tell you different
Thanks, Will!!! I couldn't pull myself away from watching this! I watched the other one as well where you made the Longbow out of more traditional materials and methods... So, I'm wondering why is Yew so hard to find now? Don't get me wrong, the laminate was beautiful and seemed to imitate the efficacious nature of Yew as you explained it. But having a Yew longbow would be awesome - I didn't catch why Yew was getting so hard to find. Thanks! Super vid (as usual!)
Basically yew is not a popular choice for timber growers because it grows so slowly so generally it’s used on large estates for its hedging or architectural purposes also planted in church yards but generally protected so the conditions needed for bow making are seldom met, it also has a historical significance as we ran out of yew during the battle of agincourt and was brought in from Italy as a form of tax hence it’s Latin name Tax
@@WillLordPrehistoricSurvival Oh Wow... Thanks for all that, Will!!! Juat absolutely _fascinating_ history! I really hope you're able to find some more of it (nice pieces of Yew) for your heritage work. Best Always!
nice work! might have a crack myself. im currently making alot of hazel selfbows and getting to grips with bowmaking fully. got a lovely piece of yew to work with but ive not gathered the courage to work on it yet!
@@WillLordPrehistoricSurvival it’s been pretty much roughed out: so no bark on it. It’s just about ready for shaping before tiller. But still too scared! Lol Made a superb American style bow from bnq wood the other week! Suprised myself with how well it works! Be interested in buying a pre glued blank from you if you’d consider it? Think you’re just down the read from me in sunny Norfolk anyway?
Really enjoyed the video, thanks Will! Out of interest presumably a man made string would last longer than something like hemp, or is it negligible? Cheers!
Nice bow. Just curious, when finishing the loop for the bowstring, how did you tie off the extra cordage? Is it just held on by friction through the cordage process, or do you retie it every once in a while as it comes undone, or is there a specific knot or technique to keep it in place?
Laminated bow are an advance to the primitive bow by far I know that by culture the English longbow as a great following especially in UK it was an advanced tool in the old days we also know that the composite bow from eastern cultures was way faster and light
I've got a lovely clean laburnum stave to have a go at . Getting it must have looked a bit dodgy, a bloke in his 50's skulking about in the bushes of a layby must have a scary sight for sure 😂😂😂😂
I know this sounds like safety sally stuff, but please don't let the uncured epoxy touch your skin, once you get sensitized to it you can't use it anymore for life.
Awsome will love you work you are a legend, i live in the forest of dean and currently got two yew staves drying for a English long bow, cant wait to start on them
My 8 year old son prefers watching your videos to any children's shows like cartoons. He is outside now working on making some chord. Cheers!

Yeah in my experience modern string outlasts natural fibres mate
Dacron (a polyester) is the 'industry standard'. Not a lot of difference in how it shoots, but it holds together well.

A question. Can you discuss the pros / cons of having more heartwood vs more sapwood as i see here.

Do you plane them flat first or just straight off the saw I'd thickness sand them like my guitar fretboards
Great content Will where do i buy the glue you used to laminate the laths please
You can get it on eBay mate
Not sure you are aware will but you can buy a stepless cone drill , would be much better for that than the stepped one
