Well done. Neighbour had ducks and a pet Collie. It spent all day rounding them up into a tight group, at which point they would explode in all directions. Dog was on his knees by bedtime.
I am fascinated by the intelligence , obedience and dedication of those 4 beautiful border collies . They even don’t hear or see the crowd around them because they are so focused on doing their job and listening to their master . Absolutely beautiful ❤
I saw a border collie once who had learned that a tough old ewe would not run from him when he chased her. When he stood in front of her and barked, she would chase him. That was how he got her in her pen. Now what the ducks have trained themselves to do is follow humans with food in their hands. That's why you don't need dogs to bring in ducks. You need them for sheep or cattle.
I've owned several and they have the most beautiful natures of anything in the world. But you have to be able to deal with and cater to their madness, which is shit loads of fun. Such lovely dogs.
In Scotland when I was young - so 70+ years ago - shepherds always trained their collies on ducks cos ducks are even harder to separate. They stick together even tighter than sheep.
Beautiful! Incredible dogs! We had an Australian Shepherd from 10 weeks till 16 years later. He was so smart! He spent the the first years trying to keep everyone in the house herded together! I think he finally that we were just too dumb to be herded, so he took up playing ⚽️🏀🥎🎾! 🤣
Because like ant other animal or person, they thirst for companionship, and while not all people are kind, a large fraction of people willing to adopt theme are. It's as simple as that.
This is an incredible demonstration. Intelligence, cooperation, calmly & quietly so the birds aren't ruffled or frightened. Consider how most dogs would respond to a flock of ducks, lol. Just the greatest dogs, full of curiosity & heart.
part of the biggest skill here is the dogs taking their attention off the herd - I have seen some Border Collies keep their eyes on the herd WHILE they listen to their master

I have a three year old BC that is intelligent and very loving. From my experience he is smarter than most humans i have met.. Most humans can be fooled over and over again and never realize it. If i intentionally try to trick my BC he will only be fooled the first time. If i try the same trick a week later he will not fall for it. Beautiful, intelligent and friendly what more could you ask for.
My Border Collie Mindy once broke free of the lead when I was walking her to catch a duckling swimming in the pond. She jumped in and swam towards the duck. Then I noticed a notice board beside the pond saying "No Dogs in the pond please" so I as like "Oh no!" and then the duckling got away and she got out of the pong soaking wet!
My Tess ran around a park pond and chased the geese back into the pond as she had noticed they were running after the children. She didn't even get wet. She left the ducks alone as they weren't so threatening to the kids. I hadn't even had a chance to train her, yet she was doing it on her own. The park mgr. wasn't too thrilled and told me to put her leash back on if we were planning to stay any longer. Just as well since we were both tired and gave her some water and some of our turkey burgers-no onions-and a couple of French fries. I asked Tess if she wanted to come back and she wagged her tail. I wondered how she was going to herd those geese with a leash on, but we chose to go up Kennesaw Mt. instead and she liked that too plus going to Bruster's.
You both have intelligent dogs. There are ducks on a pond in our local park, and one day a Labrador saw them, dived in and swam straight for them with his jaws wide open. Luckily he came straight back when his owner called him. Died laughing, talk about the wrong sort of keenness 😅
The greatest dog teachers are those that teach dogs to herd all ways amazes me how much control he has with the dogs but all so how much love a respect the animals have for the herder and teacher ....
The collies will naturally always keep the sheep or ducks rounded up together. The handler/shepherd has to teach the dogs to start, to stop, to lie down, to go left or right. But the rounding-up gene is born into the dog.
Amazing, what wonderful creatures - even though threatened by a pack of wild dogs those ducks did not panic. They protected each other and calmly found a bridge to escape.

Super BCs, thank you for sharing this amazing video! We rescued what we believe to be a Border-Aussie. She is BC all the way, except that she is a bit heavier bodied than we anticipated a BC would get, but have just played that off as being her Aussie side. Her tail is also only about 4" and Aussies can be born docked so we don't know if it was natural or DONE that way. I can't stand the idea of altering the body of an animal for human preferences! I think the worst is probably de-clawing cats. Anyhoo, these are awesome BC's, our little girl is SO excitable that I can't imagine her being THIS trainable, haha. We thought many times about finding a place for our late Aussie to herd ducks, but though he lived to be 12, we never did :(....... He had a great life though, as do our newly rescued fur-babies. A girl and a boy mini Aussie.
Cool video and cool Dogs! I love how Border Collies are so smart! I have my own Border Collie called Mindy, and she can open doors with her paws she is so smart!!!
Yes, but when stupid city people buy border collies just for their hobby, they suffer, because they want to run around the grass and herd livestock. In the city they get very bored.
I miss my BCs. They used to herd: hens, chipmunks, squirrels, an opossum, ducks, geese, children, anyone on a riding lawn mower, and me occasionally. My Tess Siobhan detected my Diabetes before my dr. did and she taught my red/white BC, Gypsy Rose Lee, to take over before she died at 16.2 yrs. Tess's grandson, Max, became a service dog for a little girl with CP.
Have had Border Collies and Standard Poodles, several. The breeding is so important. My 1st BC was so incredibly smart, he understood me without words. Our 1st Standard Poodle was a genius, probably as smart as 1st BC, 2nd SP was severely inbred, it was heartbreaking to get his papers and realize he had the same grandparents on both sides, he had terrible epilepsy and tore his knee up falling, had surgery that broke, had to have euthanized. Our 2nd and third BC’s were brilliant and great family dogs. On #4 BC now, 1st AKC, she was bread for the show ring but she’s all looks, not so much brain, sadly, very sweet biddable girl, I think it’s coz we basically rescued her at 18 months, she wasn’t trained as a puppy.

My first sheepdog type was an Aussie/BC-Gem (the Empath) and when she died, I acquired a full-bred BC I first named T'Ami. She apparently didn't like that Vulcan female name so I renamed her Tess Siobhan. Her family herded cows and sheep. We had her son-JackBNimble-and several girlfriends (so he wouldn't be lonely) and we adopted Little Bo Peep and her cousin/BFF, Gypsy Rose Lee from a sheep farm. My niece has an Australian Cattle Dog named Lily. If I couldn't have a BC, I'd want a Cardigan Corgi next.

Coyote Ericus and Jonathan...whether or not you support this activity, it is NOT just for our amusement. These dogs LOVE to use their minds and bodies to an end, they NEED it. They are happiest when being trained and doing what they are trained to do. If you tried to turn these dogs into lapdogs they would NOT be happy!! Do not adopt an energetic or smart dog if you do not intend to work those areas of it's psyche.

This is just a demonstration of what the dogs can do. They are indispensable in herding animals.
