My Positano Italy travel tips will show you step by step (literally) how to get from the Positano beach area where the Positano Jet ferries dock to the town square, Piazza Dei Mulini where you can find taxis and buses. Traveling by ferry to Positano could be a terrible idea if you have mobility issues or a lot of luggage! I walk you through the path that we walked with our luggage. Positano is a vertical town, meaning it's straight up lots of steps and uphill pathways that are crowded with tourists and shops. If you have mobility issues you may wish to arrive in Positano by car, avoiding the crowded uphill trek from the Positano ferry dock. Subscribe for more Italy and travel videos!

Hi Cathy, OMG, the cobblestone and the stairs are quite a workout but the scenery is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Italy is my dream trip and I do hope to go one of these days. Take care and have a great week. Carol
Hi Carol, I hope that you get to go, it really is pretty. Have a great week Carol. 💖
Hi Cathy
Oh my goodness! That’s a lot of stairs and walking. Especially with a suitcase. But the scenery is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Karen
Thanks Karen! It is pretty! 😊
Great video thank you 100% helpful
Thank you so much for sharing . Enjoy !
Thank you for watching! 😊
Wow thanks so much for the tips, that is quite the hike especially with all your bags! I think you would need to do training before you arrive haha! I can imagine for elderly or people who are not in great shape this would be very difficult! I love seeing all the shops and restaurants as we passed by, I just love Italy! My suitcases would be full of all those gorgeous dresses! I also love seeing all the fashions all the ladies are wearing. Thank you for sharing xoxo
Yes, I would have buns of steel if I lived there and if I was climbing all of the stairs every day! 😆
Thank you for sharing, looks beautiful!!
Thanks for watching! It really is pretty. 😊
Thank you for this video and the excellent advice. If I ever have the good fortune to visit Positano, I will remember it. I hope you've recovered after being ill on the trip.
It took a good six weeks to recover, not sure what I picked up but all back to normal now. Thanks for watching.
Thank goodness I watched this thanks for the information me and the wife will be catching a taxi now from sorrento
Hi thank you for posting. This is an absolute gem of a video. I'm going there I July and now I know what to expect and what not to wear since it may be very hot. I think I might just stay in Naples and do a day trip w/o luggage.
You are welcome! Have you thought about staying in Sorrento and do day trips? That’s how I would do it next time.
Wow! Lots of stairs. Helpful video. Thanks!
Awesome! 😊
Thank you so much for this informative video. I am planning on going to Positano next year in May and so excited from watching RUclips videos. I am trying to get as much info as I can and recently found out about the luggage porters and wondered how to get to the hotel once I get off the ferry.
I'm so excited for you!!
That was very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome!
So helpful and informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Looks fun! 💜
It was! 💖
I love your video. It is most helpful. My husband and I will be visiting the Amalfi coast in June. Thanks a bunch!!
Have fun!
Perfect timing with your video. I’ve been asked to go on holiday to Italy next year. After watching your video & seeing some photos I gather Italy is a very hilly place with lots of stairs. As I have fibromyalgia & a bad back I doubt my body would like me much after walking around those hilly areas so it wouldn’t be an enjoyable holiday. I’ll just have to travel there vicariously through your videos.
My thoughts as well. And Cathy had a cold.
It really depends on what part of Italy as far as how hilly it is. Perhaps a bus tour might work for you, or even a cruise? Personally, I have done both a cruise and this vacation and I would choose the cruise as my favorite.
Hi Trina, I have fibromyalgia and asthma that’s worsened by humidity and love Italy. As Cathy says, where you go makes a big difference, as does when. Venice, Milan and Florence (in the centre) are fairly flat, although there will often be cobble stones which can be difficult. Milan, Venice and Rome have lots of public transport to get around. It’s much easier out of the summer season when it’s cooler and not quite so overwhelmingly crowded. For me, the biggest problem becomes the flights but as I’m in the UK I travel by trains and book hotels by stations and it’s much more manageable that way for me. I hope you do get to enjoy Italy one day and wish you well with your health!
Nice video Cathy, it's sure not something I would do. With my bad knee's I wouldn't make it. I just want to get where I'm going by car and someone carry my luggage. You did those stairs and inclines and still talked, good for you. Enjoy!
Thanks so much Maureen! My knees hurt for about a week after I returned home. 😆
Cathy this was so helpful. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Now I really know how you didn't gain any weight on your trip. Holy Moly! All those steps, with luggage, and people coming at you. Phew. Lol..
I loved seeing it so much. I bet you slept great! You look beautiful. Did you get sunburned? Thankyou so much for taking us along with you Cathy. 🥰❤️
I got a really nice tan, that is fading fast. Thanks for joining me! 💖
Very thankful I saw this! I'm going in October
Have a great vacation!
We were on the bus to Ravello? When my friend got travel sick ,we got off on the main road and walked allll the way down the narrow alleys and thousand's of steps....it was worth it... lovely lunch and ferry back to Sorrento...a happy accident....love your videos... keep well....
Isn't Ravello beautiful! I loved it!
Invaluable video/information. I'd be dead. LOL
Thanks Jane! 😊
Thanks for uploading! I'm planning to stay at Sorrento and I was thinking about heading Positano by ferry but turned out it′s bad idea:( I′ll take Positano by bus and take ferry to Sorrento! Thanks again!
Thank you very much indeed for the information esp where to get the bus ticket n where the bus stop is.. We are headin over mid September
You are most welcome! Enjoy your trip. 😊
Thank you for showing us the true position!
You're welcome! 😊
Great information Cathy but oh my goodness, all those people, the heat and hills.......my idea of hell 🤣🤣🤣 🤗
I know, it was crazy with all of the steps and hills, but that's what makes it so beautiful. 💖
I just found your Italy videos and I enjoyed watching them. I love your honesty - those steps in Italy are brutal! I'm going back next week and I found your tips (particularly in Capri) to be helpful. But I have one question. You took a boat ride around Capri (and did not go to the Blue Grotto). Were you expected to give the boat guy a tip? Did most people? I know that you're supposed to tip the boat guy who actually takes you into the Blue Grotto. But I'm wondering about the regular boat guy who takes you around the island.
Hi Mia! How exciting that you are going to Italy? Where are you visiting? We were supposed to stop at the Blue Grotto, but the guy that sold us the tickets put us on a shore excursion boat with Italians, we were the only English people. That particular boat tour wasn't making a stop at the Blue Grotto. To be honest, I was so sick with a bad cold that day, I really didn't care. After hearing that we would have to wait 2 hours to get into the grotto and would only be inside for 4 minutes because it was so crowded, we didn't mind missing it. Also, I've seen videos of people going inside it and it's kind of a mixed bag some like it, some say it's not worth the bother. Tipping in Italy isn't really a thing, it's not expected but if you really liked the service you can tip. No one tipped the captain of the boat tour. Yes, I've seen videos of the Blue Grotto guys asking for tips, so I would definitely tip in that instance. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching. 😊
Thank you! We were planning on taking the ferry from Naples to Positano.. not any more 👍🏼
Enjoy your vacation!
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 thank you very much! 💕🥰
Love Positano, but need to be fit. We stayed at the gorgeous Poseidon Hotel, high up the hill!!
It is gorgeous and yes, definitely need to be in good shape for all of the cardio from walking. 😊
Oh my! Cathy that’s a serious PSA! George’s knees couldn’t do that. Wow!
My knees were sore for a week after we got home! Lots of stairs, but so pretty. 😊
This was so helpful, thank you! What would you recommend instead? We are arriving from Rome . We can either do Rome to Naples or Rome to Salerno. We have luggage. Would a taxi from Salerno or Naples station to the hotel be the best option?? Do taxis go up to the hotels? Thanks in advance!
You are a trooper. Even 20 years younger I would not have made it!!!
I'd be in great shape if I lived there! 💖
I’m worn out 😂. Thank you.
looks tiring but beautiful
It was. 💖
Cathy a real one
Great informative video! Just wondering if it is easy to grab a taxi in the tabacchi area to get back to Salerno Station
Thank you! When we were there yes there were taxis. We took the bus, so I was paying more attention to the buses than the taxis, but they should be around.
Very good and helpful video. Where do you hire the porter? we will have the opposite issue as we arrive by Car and need to go down the hill. thanks for the info.
I don’t know where to hire the porter. Perhaps ask a store owner or at a hotel.
You did a great job in figuring out where you needed to go. It looked very confusing to me. How did you know what bus to take? Do the people speak english? This was a real eye opener. I am in my 70s now and even though I walk every day, this would be a challenge. We’re the buses crowded? Thank you.
Thanks! My daughter was the navigator. We used Google maps a lot and asked our inn keeper for the local bus schedule. Yes, most people spoke very good English. The buses are tiny ones because the roads are so narrow. They were packed, both people seated and standing. If I ever return to Positano I will arrive by car. It was a challenge lugging my bags up all of the stairs while dodging people in the humidity, but it was a good memory and now something we laugh about. But at the time, no so funny! 😆
Hi Cathy, thank you for this very useful guide! Can I check which month you visited? Am hoping to avoid so much heat and humidity by going off season!
Hi, I was in Italy May 15 - 27th of this year. According to Google, the temperatures should have been reasonable, but it was very hot and humid and dry, no rain at all. I will return at the very beginning of May or wait and go in September after the crowds and hopefully hottest part of the summer. I hope that you have a great trip!
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 thank you for your help! 😊
Great video! When I tried to map out this route on Google street view it was not easy to find the way up to the main square. My partner could not handle all these stairs. Was getting off the ferry easy? Maybe the moral of the story is to stay at a hotel on the waterfront ($$$). I'm saving my pennies for Hotel Covo dei Saraceni.
Glad it helped! Getting off of the ferry was easy, dragging my suitcase up all of the stairs and hills while dodging the crowds wasn't fun. 😆 What a view from that hotel, I just googled it! If I was to return to Positano again, I would arrive by car. If arriving from Capri, I would take the ferry to Amalfi City and then hire a car to Positano. There really isn't an easy way to get from the ferry drop off in Positano to the hotels without walking up some stairs. I hope that you get to visit, it is beautiful. I love the Amalfi Coast.
I imagine July was the only time u could go? ( I read Rome had a terrible heat wave in June,,, July & Aug r always hot in most countries,,, except for Australia. Tks for the tips, tho. After much research, watching Nicki Storey & Carlo’s videos ( they live in Positano we plan to go next May.
I was there in May. It was supposed to be cooler and quiet, but after being couped up with Covid I think everyone had the same idea as us. I will never return in the summer, it's just too hot. I was there in June nine years ago and it was unbearable; that's why we chose May this time, but you just can't count on the weather anymore. Enjoy your vacation, it's lovely.
I see where the problem is, you didn’t have a glass of wine for your walk! In a yeti rambler of course 😊 When in Rome…….
Thanks for taking us to Italy Cathy. I would have been mumbling curses under my breath with the way people were walking, was annoying me just watching lol . Easy to get lost, and up up up, made me exhausted watching hahahaha Keep up the walking now that you've done the hard stuff xox 7 more days and we are off on our 3 week road trip, heading to the Outback on the edge of the Simpson Desert :)
I hope that you have an amazing trip Robyn! Send me some pics, I'd love to see the scenery. 😊
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 Will do
If you took a taxi it's true you'd walk down the stairs to get to your hotel. But when you leave you'll have to walk up the stairs. So if you take the ferry or taxi you have to go up and down stairs.
Hi Cathy, this video was very helpful! We were thinking of taking either the "Positano Jet" or "NLG Jet" from Capri during our trip to Italy next month, but I guess I would go through exactly what you showed in this video. What else would you recommend getting from Capri to Positano other than the ferry option?
I'm happy that you found this helpful. Ferry is the only option for travelling between Capri and Positano. If you want to avoid all of the steps with your luggage, you can hire a luggage porter to take your bags but you will still have to walk to your hotel or to the Piazza I showed where the buses are found. The other option would be take the ferry from Capri to Amalfi City and then take a bus or taxi to Positano. If your hotel is in Positano there really isn't an easy way to avoid going up stairs or uphill. If we were to do this trip again, we would probably stay in Sorrento and then take day trips. Sorrento is much easier to access and the hotels are much more reasonable. I hope that helps. Enjoy your Italy vacation! 😊
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 Thank you, Cathy! I'll look into hiring a porter service at the port. Enjoyed you Capri vlog as well. The view from the Garden of Augustus is so beautiful. Can't wait for my trip. Thanks again!
@@aaronrides You are most welcome! If I can answer any more questions just reach out, I'm happy to help.
Holy crap- I just booked a couple of lounge chairs on Fornillo beach for a day trip via Ferry from Amalfi. I’m thinking I’ll spend the day at the beach now instead of tackling all those stairs just to reach the bus stop! Are the shops really worth the climb?
I was thinking of taking train from Rome to Salerno then ferry to Amalfi town. But I think steps would be a problem there too!😱and I’m traveling with my grandma who has bad knees so that would be so bad 😂oh lord. Now I shall look for buses. But ferry seemed so pretty! I wonder if Amalfi’s port is that far down but probably yes!
Hi, from what I remember there weren't as many steps in Amalfi City as in Positano. I've been by boat and bus and from my recollection the only "huge" amount of steps was leading up to the church, otherwise I think it's pretty flat. Enjoy your vacation, it's gorgeous!!
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 thank you!
Do you need to walk so many steps if you only go to the beach and restaurant then head back to destination like Salerno
This was helpful as we wanted to travel from Sorrento to Positano then walk to Amalfi, Ferry from Sorrento to Ravello etc We were thinking of doing Ferries as sounds safer. Would you recommend from Naples to Sorrento a Ferry? That would be from the airport of Naples to the Ferry but no one explains how to get from airport to Trains, Ferries etc We have heard is not ideal. I even emailed the ferry tickets and they said they can't help me unless I buy a ticket!!! Thx in advance!!
Walking from Positano to Amalfi is a very long walk along a very windy road. We took the train from Rome to Naples, then a cab to the Ferry Terminal. Enjoy your vacation!
I would never make it that far all up hill ... Your in better shape..
I took a taxi to my hotel in Positano from the train station. I have NEVER been so car sick as I was on that ride. The road zig zigs up and down the mountain. I guess there is no great way to get there, but it's so worth it!
A taxi wouldn't have been very helpful. The streets of Amalfi are not drivable. Seeing where the ferry docks was vey helpful. Thank you.
Well...too much climbing, too hot, and WAY too many people for me! I'm 72, overweight, and have a "bad" foot. Ordinary strolling is fine, but not this. Luckily, I did a lot of traveling when I was younger, and have been to every continent but Africa. I prefer staying at home these days anyway. But I admire you for going there!
Thanks for watching Megan! 💖
Just watched the video again to get more familiar with the way to go to the city center. I forgot to ask what hotel you stayed at?
We stayed in Praiano, I can’t recall the name of the hotel but can look it up if you want.
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 oh that's okay. I thought you stayed at the hotel you had circled at the beginning of the video that you said was further than it looked.
❤🙏🎉🙏😘🌱🇸🇻
I got tired just watching you! 😊 Beautiful place though.
LOL! I know, imagine pulling your suitcase along too! It is gorgeous though. 💖
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 it must be really hard with a suitcase. I don't think I could do it!
@@manonsinclairladyofblairad9675 It was a challenge, especially in the humid weather and me being sick with a bad cold. Now I know better for next time.
If you are fit enough to walk uphill I think ferry is good.... taxi fares are almost 4 times.
It's still quite a hike lugging suitcases.
@@StyleWithCathyOver50 I agree, we have booked ferry so may be I am being a bit biased. Thank you for sharing your experience.
What is the name of the port when ferry drops you off?
Positano.
@Cathy Over 50 - Fashion & Beauty and that's the only port there? There are no 2-3 ports in different location in the city of Positano?
@@GeniaBy There’s a dock where the ferry loads, that’s it.
Too many people not liking that ☹️
It's gorgeous though. 😊
OMG, too many stairs for me, you deserve a metal for this. Nice video but this is a pass for me.
Thanks Susan! 🥰
