Yanxi palace is the drama that got me into C dramas. Yingluo is just a fun character to me and out of all the concubines, Gao Guifei was my favorite just cause she’s such a bitch and I love her for it.
“how attractive is the emperor in this drama? incredibly, no offense” LMAO fr tho nie yuan in this drama is so much more likeable than wallance huo in ruyi… hes so much more human feeling, like he can be an ass and kinda childish sometimes but we can see that its just different sides of one person. the other one is just generally an ass all the time
Yes, this drama has a completely different take on this emperor. I believe Wallace Huo's emperor is also very human, but true, he's not written to be a likeable character at all :DD
@@quippequest thats true! but also i think nie yuan has better acting than wallance tbh.. he nails the haughty yet flawed and when it comes to it emotional personality of the emperor. in ruyi wh is completely overshadowed by his costars (i mean zhou xun, xin zhilei, did he ever stand a chance? not really) and his portrayal seems kinda like hes overcompensating a bit, but thats just me. ruyi is enjoyable too if you focus on the harem members only.

There have been times (specifically Princess Silver) where writers walking that line between historical accuracy-ish and modern sensibility just seems to confuse either the story or certain characters or both.😄😄 🤷🏾♀️
I loved this drama. I wouldn't recommend watching it for historical accuracy or realistic scenarios but if you want a good entertaining watch, this is it. Also enjoyed the character of the Emperor, although he was quite lenient in comparison to other portrayals, he commanded respect without being a tyrant. He was very sexy IMO. Looking forward to your review on this one.
This drama is such a guilty pleasure for me :DDD Like I'm aware that it's no high quality but it was just so damn enjoyable and over the top and funny? :DDD I think that if they somehow released the longer version with the additional plotlines they had to drop (and it really shows in the final episodes) I would maybe watch the whole thing again
I had the pleasure of watching Ruyis love in the palace first and that drama made me hate ling fei for a long long time. So, when I heard about yanxi palace who had Ling fei as the protagonist, I steered far away from it.
I think a lot of these reviews on Story of Yanxi Palace are scenes taken out of context. Wei Ying Luo had fears of becoming a mother because her own mother died while giving birth to her and it showed in many ways such as when the empress was trying to get pregnant and she was upset that the empress would put her health at risk to have a child. When the empress gave birth , she was so scared because she thought the empress would die and that birth was so bloody. Her fears were valid and not from a place of modernity. Or is it that having fear of something because you've witnessed it going horribly wrong can only be a modern phenomenon? Let's not forget that Ying Luo was not even born in a noble family, how could she have been raised to want children with the emperor when she was raised only by her big sister who left for the palace yearsss ago? She was not groomed to be selected for the emperor's harem because she was never eligible in the first place.
Thanks for commenting. I know all the context. I'm not criticizing what Yingluo says, I'm just using what she says and HOW she says it (and how the emperor responds) as an example to explain the style of the drama. All women, no matter the time period, are nervous about childbirth, that is true. But HOW they express this concern and how the people around them respond varies, depending on the time period. Also, I think I've already explained right before the example that I understand the drama is not a historical account.
@@quippequest so why is it it took her nearly 15 years after marriage to Qianlong to have her first child? I’m talking in real historical context here. Nobel lady Wei was from a low background and wasn’t trained as a child to become a concubine, she was trained by The Empress Fuca again that is from Historical documents, also women were using contraception medicines in almost all imperial societies, as it’s been recorded in almost all historical documents with even the methods used.
@@Winter74575 I'm not sure I understand your question. I only explained above that while the concerns about childbirth are real in any period of time, the dialogues are too modern. @@quippequest hi, ok so in this video, The female lead Wei Yinglou spoke about her fears of becoming pregnant after the emperor found out she was taking contraceptives. You then said These women were trained from a young age and with the knowledge that bearing children was there primary purpose. I agree except it wasn’t in all cases for all concubines because Historical records show that some of these women were in the Harem for many years before having a child, if you search 17th century Contraceptions , you will find that they used herbs with contraceptive properties, it was used in ancient Egypt and many other places., back to the Harem dramas and reality, If a concubine was favoured by an emperor, they generally received more of a understanding and empathy from the Emperor and in the case of Wei Yinglou , she was a favoured concubine of Qianlong, she went in the palace as a teenager and had her first of six children when she was in her 30s so that in itself is a testament that she had to be using birth control to prevent getting pregnant all those years, it’s the same for the Step Empress that was also married to the Emperor Qianlong for many years before bearing him children again she must’ve been using some preventive medicine. Again I agree that Yanxi’s palace and Every Harem ( Imperial) drama series are heavily dramatised, however almost all Emperor’s and even normal men in those times would sometimes overlook the general expectations of women depending on their emotions towards her. I was merely explaining that Wei Yinglou did not come from a high ranking family and wasn’t necessarily trained from very young ( childhood) to become a concubine, most likely more of becoming a palace maid but ended up being selected as a concubine as there’s no historical records of The exact circumstances she entered into the Harem, she wasn’t recorded as a maid but her father was working in one of the servant departments ( i can’t remember exactly what department).

The modern take is probably why this is the drama I always go back to watch, because it's refreshing to see a female protagonist stand up against those to antagonize her so many times, and most of time, it's based on her wit and not pure luck. But I also watched Princess Weiyoung for the second time after this, and the villainesses, especially Chiyun Rou, incredibly blind obsession of making Weiyoung's life a living hell and Weiyoung escaping it through luck made it so insufferable. The Legend of Haolan had this problem multiplied to 50.
