I. Thorberg Must be people who retained old dialects then, because the modern dialect in Nordland (i live in Helgaland, Nordland) have little chance understanding icelandic. I assume the southwestern part has got a better understanding (Hardanger f.ex.) where nynorsk is more prevalent. Nynorsk/old dialects to me resembles icelandic a bit more, in my opinion. Anyways, i'll look into that regarding Nordland :)

It's not actually dessicated. It's called Svið, which is a descriptive name and means scorched. The sheep's head is scorched, in modern times with a propane torch. This is done with the fur left on the head.
Good luck finding native speaker who can speak Icelandic to you, nowadays 95% of Icelandic speaks English, you'll definitely get by in Iceland with English
"I" is pronounced exactly like in Hardanger, Norway (but spelled "eg" instead of "ek"). In danish it's spelled "jeg" but pronounced "iai"... Quite a difference. Wish all of Scandinavia spoke norrena :)

well, Old Norse originally came from Norway, the vikings brought it to Iceland. since Iceland was such an closed island and nobody really came there the language didn't change as much as other languages did. so Old Norse kind of became Icelandic.. p.s. the smaller guy is speaking modern Icelandic
