This gave me a good understanding of where to place my pedals & why. Even though my board is going to be pretty basic, it's still great to have the options & seeing what works. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for an excellent video Jayme. I am exploring setting up a pedal board for the first time ever, I have had a handful of pedals over the years, but its time to get serious.
Hey Jamie. Good stuff. I love Source Audio's gear. Thanks again for laying it out cleanly and practically. I'm a pretty simple player so I have a Boss tuner, Source Audio envelope filter, EBS octiver, Boss bass chorus, and Tech 21 Sans Amp---all in that order. I think I'll put the EBS first after listening to you. When you get a second, check out bassefx.com. Cheers.
It just depends, I typically set the amp for my venue and do the tone shaping from the instrument/pedals/hand placement. I also don't use an effects loop, I run them in-line. I'll actually be answering the question in more depth on next week's podcast, you can check it out on my web site jaymelewis(dot)com :) thanks and I hope all is well dude!
Great video, as always Jayme! One question: do you keep your amp setting flat since you have all that sound sculpting ability at your feet? Also, do you find it more beneficial to plug your bass in the front input of effects loop?
Hey man nice board and video. One thing I can tell you from personal experience is that Vp Jr (ESPECIALLY using the tuner out) is killing your tone. Unless you're using it constantly in every song (I couldn't see why :-) you should try putting it in a little true bypass loop. I use the Keely but there's a ton of people making them now. I was shocked at what a difference it made when I took it out.
Phenomenal video, so many questions. So when you set up your EQ in ProTools, is it pretty straight forward? Or is there a secret to it. Also do you set up your other Source Audio pedals in ProTools at all? When you use the HH does it pick up the preamp nicely? Last question lol, if my bass amp head has a compression nob already do you still recommend a compression pedal? I really appreciate the feedback thank you and again awesome video :-)
Thanks for posting this, Jayme. I've just expanded my board (for bass) from 2 pedals to 5. I've heard a few different things about the chain and wondered what your opinion is as well: Current chain: envelope filter-->fuzz-->phaser-->octave/synth-->delay I'm still experimenting, but there seems to be a bit of dispute over having the filter or the octave (EHX POG), at the start of the chain. Whaddya think?
Hi Anthony, sorry for the delay. I like having my filters after my fuzz and distortions because I think it really helps out with the wicky-wicky sound; kind of like a guitar player and a wah pedal. I like the octaver first because it requires a pure source in order to function "correctly." But of course, there are no wrong answers :) I'll elaborate on this more in my podcast this week if you'd like to listen it's at jaymelewis (dot) com :)
Hey Jayme, great tutorial! - I really like the VooDoo Lab Analog Chorus but for guitar, I prefer the BOSS CEB-3 for my bass. Just curious if you have any tip's-opinion/settings examples for the BOSS CEB-3. BTW I use the EWS Tri-Logic Pre-Amp, great pedal as well!
+TheGrooveMaster10 I haven't used that pedal before, but I'm sure it's awesome! I just don't like to lose the low end, which happens naturally with chorus pedals, so anything that doesn't do that - I'm all in :)
I understand that pedals give you more control and I honestly wish I could afford a nice big pedalboard, but what's your take on the line 6 bass pod? I was given one back when i started playing and I'm curious as to what would be good to add to it or even replace it.
Hey Jayme, do you have any problems with a weak output signal? Seeing that your signal goes through so many pedals, I thought it might have suffered some signal loss in there.
A question if I may: What is the purpose of recording a silent loop on the Ditto? When you record over it, the new loop keeps recording after it gets to the end of the measure (starting again at the beginning of the measure) until you punch out of the overdub... is that correct? Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
I just creates a time-frame. in this case i'm playing something that's time-free, so i just needed a start and stop point. the reason i didnt do it in "real time" is because I'm using my foot to work the volume pedal, so i can use it to toggle the loop pedal (unless i'm in a chair, which usually with rock bands I am not). it was just a little thought :) Hope that makes sense!
Hey Jayme. I just started getting interested in buying pedals to use at church. Which would you recommend as the essential startup pedals for a bassist?
any idea how do cheat an active bass to be able to roll down the tone like passive ? i putting a active preamp in fender jazz wit aguilar pickups hum cancelling pickup u demoed , gotta put Aguilar OB2 Pre to lvl out cuz other bass is "metal" emg bass
+alexander “aj” chang Nice! Ya, if I were you I'd just use the treble knob on your preamp to roll down the high end, it' essentially the same thing but it also allows you to boost those frequencies if you want. Thanks for reaching out!
Jayme, you are a great bass player and I love the tunes I have found on youtube that you play on. But that pedal board has so much stuff to think about that could keep you so busy tweaking with the settings, that you don't have any time left to think about what it is that you are playing. Maybe it is really worthwhile for recording original music that is geared to that but It doesn't sound that good to me in an isolated setting and I wonder how much it really would improve the sound on a "real world" gig. Obviously you have your act totally together so that your gizmos don't keep you distracted from what you are supposed to be doing, but for many of us more "regular" bass players this seems to be a recipe for losing a gig quickly.
I want that shirt. Well, not that exact shirt, that's your shirt and probably won't fit me. Also, that'd be creepy if I was asking for your shirt. "Can I have your shirt?" *pant* See? Creepy...
If you can't take a good guitar, plug it into a good tube amp and make it sound good without a bunch of gadgets, maybe you should not be playing. Old school here.
Seems to me that you have so many pedals (specially compressors) your sound sounds "flat" and lacks dynamic and punch......But that's just my opinion, no harm meant! ;)
WOW! You're a great bass player, and a scientist! That freaked me out.
This gave me a good understanding of where to place my pedals & why. Even though my board is going to be pretty basic, it's still great to have the options & seeing what works. Thanks for the tips!
Nice! Glad to have been able to help!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Video quality and bass rig setup looks great...A+++
Great video, Jayme. Awesome walk-through and wicked cool sounds, man. Thanks for posting!
+Jamminn555 Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Thanks Sebastian!!!
Nice! Site looks pretty cool, I'd probably get into trouble if I hung out there too much :)

Thank you so much for this video! It was really helpfull :D

Just experiment! See what sounds best. I would probably put the octave first.
I personally recommend the octave at the beginning, but like BBQify said, play around with 'em and see what works for you :)

thanks for the reply! where is it you can get them? I'm located in Britain
Hey Jayme, do you have any problems with a weak output signal? Seeing that your signal goes through so many pedals, I thought it might have suffered some signal loss in there.
Oops, didn't realise you addressed at the end with the compressor.
+Leonard Ng Music Ya, you're right the compressor at the end helps with this. Thanks!

What kind of cables are you using to create your chain.
They're from a Planet Waves Pedalboard kit.
Hey Jayme. I just started getting interested in buying pedals to use at church. Which would you recommend as the essential startup pedals for a bassist?
try getting a muff and reverb. the muff for big thick sound and reverb for air
An octave pedal, then possibly an overdrive IMHO
any chance of getting back to me? what is the fabric thing at the top of the necck?
Its called a FretWrap, made by a mob called Gruvgear
www.gruvgear.com
Yes it's a FretWarp :)
Do you find the volume pedal works the same with passive and active basses? I notice ernieball has passive and active versions
I haven't really noticed anything different, but then again I haven't really been listening for a difference. If there is it's probably subtle :)
Hello. I have and OCD pedal. It sounds great in my bass but it cut the lows... Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks!!
The OCD is more of a guitar-specific pedal. Try the Darkglass B7K/Vintage deluxe or the Tech21 VTBass line.

Does anyone know what amp he uses?
that's an Aguilar TH500 and DB112 cabs behind me :)
I want that shirt. Well, not that exact shirt, that's your shirt and probably won't fit me. Also, that'd be creepy if I was asking for your shirt. "Can I have your shirt?" *pant*
