Actually, I'd say that the second part of the Hand, where he's glowing gold and is invincible, and constantly attacks you, parrying every attack in that phase is harder than anything that the Edge does.
Jaded Mask Really not sure why he was trying to encourage a mass murderer to a fair fight. Unless Ryder didn’t slaughter people unless they attacked him first, I’m not sure why the Edge would be so polite and encouraging.
All The Edge wanted was to fight The Rider, that's why they put him as the 'real' final boss (since everyone knew that if The Edge failed then The Beat would be no match) but with that being said, if your entire purpose in life was to fight 1 guy would you want that fight to end quickly? After spending an eternity waiting?
@@TheFlyingPilgrim I think Edge is a reflection of what obsession does to the brain. He trained and trained and trained to defeat an incoming threat... and doing so lost sight of the big picture. Edge may have started out wanting to defeat Rider, but the absurd amount of time he spent training to do just that, it changed him. And in the end he just wanted a glorious fight. No matter who won. Probably because if he wasn't given a truly memorable experience, he would feel all his time and training was wasted
I think the most fantastic thing about this fight is that they coupled his obscene amount of attack power with the shortest healthbar in the game. You can literally defeat any of his phases in a single attack if you do it right. It's a proper samurai duel. Over in a flash... one way or another.
I’ve been getting really into this game recently because I saw it was on sale. Turns out you can actually beat him in five hits. After each of his wave/beam attacks it gives you just enough time to charge. If you can maintain it you can smack him and he’ll go down in one shot for phases 1-3. Phase 4 takes two charges but it is significantly easier to find a window to charge due to the long charge time on the blast of the 6 or seven parry attack.
Trope or not, I'm a sucker for "mirror match" boss battles. That and enemies that have a sort of respect for the protagonist, no matter what side of the ass kicking they're on.

When i saw that he was basically a recolor of myself, i confirmed that i was gonna get absolute destroyed.
@@liamdonnelly6854 The Beat wasn't the threat during that fight, though. It was the giant ass laser cannon she had behind her that was the threat, and she was the one controlling it.
The oar isn't a power upgrade, he even states it, it's to make him unpredictable, harder to parry and counter. It's almost a challenge and an insult combined.
I fucking love this boss. He's the most dudebro one of them all. He beats your ass, and instead of gloating like the others, what does he do? He says he's beatable, that _you can do it._ He *wants* to see you succeed, to surpass him.
It was a fucking quest getting the 'Win a Guardian fight without being hit once' achievement on this guy. Figured he was probably the easiest to do it on, still took about a day and a quarter of play. Also, I heard "Nice" a lot.
Got that achievement with the chain. He was the least bullet hell reliant guy and I pretty much memorized everything from trying to get A and S on both difficulties.
This is inspired of the Miyamoto Musashi/Kojiro Sasaki duel, the most skilled japan's swordman. Miyamoto was recognized for his two swords ability. On the island where the fight takes place, Miyamoto finaly killed Kojiro by grabing an boat oar then hit him in his head. (forgive my bad english)
Actually, the story is that he forgot his swords, but was already rowing his boat to the island where he would be dueling Kojirou. So, he carved himself a new wooden sword from one of the oars.
@@TheMustardMan8 he actually intended to bring his makeshift weapon, because kojiro used a nodachi, which is way longer than an ordinary katana, so musachi made himself the oar sword to compensate for the reach advantage that kojiro had
0:30 "I tried so hard to stay and finish my work. For years. But you know what i could never forget? Her laughter" The synths coming in as he says that with such yearning hits me different.
"You sure took your time. I was concerned you wouldn't make it this far." "This is a big day for me." "I have been waiting a long time for this moment." "Let me show you."
Love that line, after the Voice was talking about what would you do if you had an eternity to do nothing but wait, and then "he trained". For someone who has been training for eternity, that's quite a strong mental picture.
I really love how fair this fight is. Unless he's in the middle of an animation or is staggered, he can avoid damage by blocking, but so can you. It takes about 4 to 5 hits for him to defeat you, and guess how many hits it takes for you to kill him? 5. Some of the small differences are given considering how he is a boss, but either way, I love how equal this fight feels. No bullet hell, no tons of shockwaves you have to rapidly dodge. Just a battle of skill and timing.
@@LukeProduciones i really think if this game had pvp, it shouldnt be bombastic or hyper intense, this is what it should be, this boss battle but its two players
I love what all the different Jailers represent, and what lessons they try to teach you. The Chain represents impassionate hatred, sadism, humanity's evil. He's first to keep you quelled, quiet and in your cage, but he's also designed to make you reflect on the pain and suffering you inflicted on others just by existing, he gives you a passion for life by making you fear for your own. The Strap represents misunderstanding, they show you how you look to others, a dispassionate, violent beast that kills and attacks indiscriminately in the shape of a person. The voice says they locked her up because they couldn't understand her, that she was wild and uncontrollable, making you think, is this why they did the same to you? Is THIS what YOU look like to everybody else? The Line represents patience, and careful thought. They show you someone who is willing to speak with you, genuinely and honestly. But they're more neutral, not hateful, but not necessarily kind either. The Line shows you both how powerful it is to PLAN, to think BEFORE you take action, to make decisions without relying on instinct, or orders. Coming immediately after The Strap to show you the vast difference between animalistic instinct and careful action. They teach you the power of thinking for yourself. The Scale represents passionate, personal hatred. They're a representation, a manifestation of the damage you've done. Where the Line reflects the Strap, the Scale reflects the Chain. Where the Chain was impassionately violent, simply doing his job and reveling in it, The Scale's hatred and violence is directed at you personally. Because of what you did to him, because of the pain and suffering you caused to others, you created another Strap, another Chain, another YOU, represented all in the Scale. The Scale is the culmination of the villainous and evil side of Humanity, represented both by being the last "evil" guardian you see, and a representation of Humanity's worst trait, hatred. The Hand represents valour, selflessness and duty. He is the first positive side of humanity you encounter, and one that your prisoners believe YOU would hate, for he is your Jailer, the one who first imprisoned you. He is the reason you're here, and much like many other characters here, he is like you, although in this case you don't remember your duty or your purpose. He fights for others, but not because it is his obligation to do so, unlike with you. He fights because he wants to, because he believes it is the correct thing to do, morally and personally. He shows selflessness in his actions. Coming after The Scale to make you reflect on your own hatred, at first you were in the Hand's shoes against The Scale, but fighting with selfishly motivated purpose. The fight against The Hand now has you in The Scale's shoes, but this time your opponent has a purpose beyond themselves, but ultimately he falls against your blade. Showing you both the faults of duty, and the courageous nature to fight for what you believe in. The Song represents compassion and ego. The Song is contradictory to herself, being compassionate, but personally motivated, unlike The Hand, who fights to save others out of true compassion. The Song fights you out of ego, believing that you would not deny her when being shown kindness after a gauntlet of difficult and hateful enemies. However, you DO deny her, your freedom being important to you, even if you must kill even those who show you compassion to do it. She shows you that people are complicated, and that It's not positive to see someone turn to ugly behaviour to get what they want, why are YOU doing it, then? The Burst represents confidence and competition for the sake of victory. The lesson she teaches you is both a reminder of the Chain's pain, but also the folly of self-assurance in your own actions. If you've beaten The Song, then they understand you will stop at nothing to win, so now you are presented with someone who thinks the same way. Someone who will use every advantage they can muster, someone who crushes others mercilessly for the sake of WINNING. In your victory, the lesson is truly proven though. Self-assurance in your actions and absolute confidence is a folly. Another lesson of thinking for yourself, maybe your actions can be wrong, no matter how confident you are in your steps forward. The Edge ALSO represents competition for the sake of self-improvement, and bettering the self in general. Many guardians here act as your mirror, in some way or another. The Chain is your dispassionate murder, The Strap is your alien nature, The Line is your patience, The Scale is a representation of the pain you caused, the Hand is your duty, the Song is your ego, the belief that you're doing the right thing, The Burst is your skill. But the Edge, he is all of these things, all bound into one, but refined and sharpened to a point. The Edge IS you, if you were human, if you had been born on the other side of the conflict. If you were the Hero, and not the Monster. He shows you what you could be, what you CAN be. There is no stopping you now, but it does not mean the end if you have taken all your lessons to heart, and you understand the Edge for what he represents. He is the final, true hurdle. But not the last lesson, he isn't the end. You decide that now. The Beat is hope and innocence. Now in the shoes of the monster, freedom taken comes at the cost of innocence. Your own, and hers. What matters now is what you do what that freedom, did you feel pain when killing someone who could not stop you? Who could not even come close to posing a true, genuine threat? If you feel loss, if you feel pain in that moment. Then you had gained newfound innocence from your lessons, and thrown it away for freedom. But that too, is not the end. For innocence lost is its own lesson. Humanity is both good and evil, but what gives someone the right to decide those things for themselves is freedom. You were never free. Not while in the prison, and not before it either. But now...NOW you are free. Free to decide for yourself what you do. If you burn it all down, if you sit on the rotting earth and quietly rot with it, enjoying what you can never touch, or if you choose to free everyone else from a fate they cannot escape alone. All that's left now is your choice to decide, are you A Monster? or are you the Hero? You need only step forward over the Edge, and make that decision for yourself.
Something people don't seem to pay much attention to is the fact that The Edge withers and corrupts the world around himself in his final phases. The implication seems to be that they've reverse-engineered some aspects of your existence and he's gone through with having them tacked onto himself to be your equal. He's decided you are his final goal and nothing else matters beyond that duel. People who think he's a tragic figure don't really understand his dedication.
@@jammish9802 He's definitely not. You can see in his concept art that he's a cyborg, and he looks nothing like the scouts, which all look exactly the same.

The Rider and The Edge is basically Raiden vs Sam. Goku Vs. Vegeta. Sonic Vs. Shadow Naruto Vs. Sasuke. If only The Edge survived his battle with Rider to become a powerful ally in one way or another. :c
"What would you do if had an eternity to do nothing but wait? Do you keep busy, do you daydream, do you freak out? He trained." And that's when I knew this guy was gonna kick my ass.
Yeah, I agree totally! Now I'm beating the shit out of him when i'm doing Speedrun Mode. Actually, I did a time of 51 minutes at my third attempt. I need to practice a little more to do a sub 45min if possible. But now, countering is a piece of cake! :p
My interpretation of this character, based on the in-game info and stuff: 1) Rider arrives/crashes on planet ruining towns and killing people. 2) Rider gets subdued, people realise his op regeneration powers and enact a plan to imprison him for indefinite ammount of time, until they figure things out. 3) A call for guardians is made, "top-notch killers and fighters", as The Voice mentions. People who would be strong enough to 1v1 him if needed to. 4) A certain aspiring "hero", gets accepted as one of the guardians. Prison is built. 5) Having been a witness to martial prowess that rider has, seeing all the damage he brought, realising his "outsider/alien" (The Stranger) status, this guardian becomes obsessed with him. 6) He adopts/tries to simulate rider's combat style while at the same time desiring to upstage him in it, basically become this planet's "version" of rider, but better in everything. Hence his visual similiarities, even head/chin accessory. 7) As time passes by, he adopts the name/becomes known as The Edge. 8) As rider battles The Edge, guardian reluctantly realises that he can't beat rider at his own game after all. So, being a weapons master he is, he decides to use his original/older style he has been known for/accepted as guardian in the first place. Welcome the oar coupled with fiery attacks.
Nope you are wrong, He's a Rider just like our character, check his armor, his sword and his hair, all the same, and in the game, when you're on the verge of die, and if u parry, your armor will turn to red like him, but it's because he trains himself for years, and like said the Voice, he's immortal (just like us)
Nox "Nope you are wrong" what a dick thing to say. He's theory is actually makes sense while you bring up something easily disproved by the final boss of the game
That ending. Epic mid-air samurai clash, one of them falls over delayed. And as he fell down, the Edge thought, "wait why did I try to do that with an oar? the fuck was I thinking?!"
Absolutely love the "we both know we are fighting against ourselves" because his attacks... are not lightning quick, he gives you full chance to process they are coming... which is the problem, he beats you down because you snap react to his flourishes, to the point where they entirely become feints. You also cannot take things too quickly, attacking when it isn't safe is an insane risk and may just be what he needs to start a beat down, even if you do a full combo is entirely impossible and if you keep hitting him you will end up dead again. He is not your opponent, you are your own opponent
I did Tae Kwon Do when I was in my early teens (I wasn’t very good). Fighting this guy brought me back to the feeling of going into a spar with my old instructor. “Try and stay with me through this.” “FOCUS!” “I want nothing but your very best.”
This fight... i just... when i first got here i was hyped after beating the Burst, and looking forward to another agonising challenge. Then he appears, the music kicks in and my evening was very much spent. Such a good boss.
I really really love that this fight felt more like a real martial arts duel than a boss fight. As a martial artist myself, it really made me happy. How simple techniques like feints can really bring you out of the comfort zone.
This is my favorite fight in the game. Because unlike most of the bosses where the odds are against you or the odds are in your favor. The edge feels like your fighting an opponent equal in skill and power.
Seriously, though, how long do you think he spent training with the sword before he looked over at the oar and thought, "Sure, let's spice it up a little."
This man's probably been training even before he's become a guardian; likely somehow blessed with eternal life thanks to technology. Probably capable of slicing mere humans in pieces with one stroke, he's likely grown bored, waiting for an opponent. He likely was even more frustrated to know that he was the very last guardian. So he worried that his training would be for naught. Luckily, you respected his wish for a worthy foe.
"Give me something memorable, that I can learn from, that will make me better" He says this even during his desperation phase, he doesn't want to win, he wants you to surpass him, he can only reach further if faced with someone better than him. He was given infinite time, and he used it to train. Finally dead, you know for damn sure the first thing he would have done in the great beyond is continue to improve, patching up all the weaknesses the Stranger found and then waiting for his next challenge
I love the background story telling in this boss fight and the one after it. its like they expected you (the in game charter) to fight this guy and die and the way the boss after him reacts is almost like she never ever planned for you to get to her but this dude was prepping all his life to fight just you for some reason and the girl after him is just some random chick.
I haven't played Furi, but I do want to. I also had a voice in my head that spoke to me after I figured out The Edge's nature. "This fight, it's just you and me. No gimmicks, no bullshit. Just you, me, and a dance to the death. I may not be the strongest, but that doesn't mean I weak either. Remember this, no one is truly invincible. No matter how many times they beat you down, you need to get back up, smile at them and ask for seconds."
This was by far the most enjoyable fight. Either you fully read his full set of moves or you won't make it, unlike the others where you could tank some hits as a strategy for massive damage or faster times.
This boss fight makes me feel sorrow, because it was so good the first time through, when you enter the trance state and really get into it with this guy whose whole life is this one fight. And now, I've played through it so many times, but I never got that first time when I beat it.
I love how games like Furi and Sekiro are so hard on a first playthrough but by the end you've clearly grown in skill. The boss took me so many tries my first time but when I go back to the game I can beat him pretty easily and it just makes you feel so badass
Seriously I love the type of games where you're the one who gets better at the game, not your character. You don't deal more damage, you don't find better weapons you just getting gud
I loved this game didn't like Sekiro. The way Furi does difficulty always makes me feel like I'm improving and progressing whereas Sekiro just says "fuck off and go fight these same monsters for the tenth time to get back to where you were and then die right away once you get back". It just wasn't fun, I didn't feel like I was progressing, no rush of combat, just annoyance. Furi never annoyed me a single time, nothing ever felt unbeatable. Not because it's easier but because it's designed better.
@@close_your_eyes8185 Eh I'm going to give Sekiro another shot. Every death was a screwup I happened to make. I just need to hone my skill. But for now, I'll stick with Ds3 and Bloodborne.

Whenever I was on any previous boss, or any after (besides the Beat) I felt angry, whenever I was killed or hurt. I felt mad. They just keep goading me with every shot, being condescending, unrelenting assholes, a constant torrent of shit-talking coming out of their mouth. On the Edge, I felt defeated. He was so fucking chill. So cool about everything, yet he absolutely dunks my shit in on every fight. But he constantly cheers you up, motivates you, pushes you forward. "Try to stay with me through this." He was one of the three (being the Voice, the Beat, and him) who pushed me on to keep going against the hardest boss I've faced, after constantly dying over and over again. "Excellence is not an art, it's pure habit. We are what we repeatedly do." R.I.P. Paddle Daddy. I hope he's happy that in death, he saved the world.
Throughout the game the biggest lines "Excellence is not an art, it's pure habit. We are what we repeatedly do." and "Do I look unconquerable to you?" Every attempt, every hit was not failure... but an Opportunity, to learn, to do better, to train, to ultimately perfect the craft.
He was like "oh man I can't wait to fight this legendary Raider dude, I should train tho. Fuck I lost my sword and i can't waste any time, what do we have here. Oh, an oar."
The oar was actually a reference to musashi. He supposedly carved a wooden sword from an oar during a boat trip to an island, which he then used for a duel on the shore. Which is why the oar phase takes place on a dock.
After first attempt: This one is pretty easy compared to the others, i should be done in a few tries. after 100th attempt: YES! YOU ARE FUCKING UNCONQUERABLE!!!!!
I've always wondered what it would be like if The Edge was playable, with the amount that it is reinforced that the two of you are easily matched and even the similarity of his design with the Rider's.
ain't gonna lie, never played furi, but DAMN that game has a hell of a soundtrack, to be fair, this one is one of my favorites ost's in all games, my immagination goes reeeeally far when i play this in my headphone...
I also played Furi purely because I heard the music from it. I knew nothing about the game when I started it, and it's still one of the best games I've ever, ever played.
Definitely the best boss in Furi. He's got a simple, but great arena, with a slight change in the next phase. Changes up his arsenal in said next phase, so it's different and unexpected. When you do down, he doesn't talk down but gives words of encouragement, trying to get you to fight at your best. And the music, it's way more somber than the last boss with it's high octane action, so this is a welcome surprise. He's still leagues better than the last 2 bosses... yeesh.
I found the burst waay harder than him, imo, the fight is amazing, but quite easy except for the phase where he spams this near undodgable attack with the paddle.
what do you mean ""near undodgable" ? It's not that hard to do it hitless (because you don't really have the choice, he hits like a truck), I don't get what you're talking about

I was really hyped after killing The Burst, i wanted to see how were the other remaining guardians, and after hearing the story of The Edge i was like "He is gonna be THE non-final boss that feels like a final boss right?"

It was a fucking quest getting the 'Win a Guardian fight without being hit once' achievement on this guy.
Figured he was probably the easiest to do it on, still took about a day and a quarter of play.
Also, I heard "Nice" a lot.
Actually I think that is easier with The Beat. All of her phases were really easy in my opinion.

@@cyberlof4135 The Edge never uses projectiles, though
This is inspired of the Miyamoto Musashi/Kojiro Sasaki duel, the most skilled japan's swordman. Miyamoto was recognized for his two swords ability. On the island where the fight takes place, Miyamoto finaly killed Kojiro by grabing an boat oar then hit him in his head.
(forgive my bad english)
I feel like the Guardians are based off Historical figures.

"Excellence is not an art, it's pure habit. We are what we repeatedly do."
Probably the most memorable fight for me, along with the sniper. lol
It seems kind of rude to put this guy right after The Burst's final phase. I was way too damn twitchy to deal with any of his fakeouts.
I think that was the point
Yea that was the point. Simply to get ya.

My interpretation was he was formerly another of the scouts sent down who defected to the side of the planet
@@jammish9802 He's definitely not. You can see in his concept art that he's a cyborg, and he looks nothing like the scouts, which all look exactly the same.

the oar is the real lesson
Definitely a callout to the duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro.
My interpretation of this character, based on the in-game info and stuff:
1) Rider arrives/crashes on planet ruining towns and killing people.

"Let's see how predictable you think I am now !"
I wish if there is a version where you hear the edge talking shit to you throughout the music
"Watch me."
"Give me something memorable, that I can learn from, that will make me better"
He says this even during his desperation phase, he doesn't want to win, he wants you to surpass him, he can only reach further if faced with someone better than him. He was given infinite time, and he used it to train. Finally dead, you know for damn sure the first thing he would have done in the great beyond is continue to improve, patching up all the weaknesses the Stranger found and then waiting for his next challenge

"let's see how predictible you think I am now."
Eh still predictible
"Try to stay with me through this"
Ded
This fight pushed me to get better overall. That feeling of accomplishment when you beat this guy after parrying through the whole fight
Throughout the game the biggest lines "Excellence is not an art, it's pure habit. We are what we repeatedly do." and "Do I look unconquerable to you?"
Every attempt, every hit was not failure... but an Opportunity, to learn, to do better, to train, to ultimately perfect the craft.
So was his time spent mastering the Way of the Sword, or the Way of the Oar?
noonethatspecial Both apparently... :/
He was like "oh man I can't wait to fight this legendary Raider dude, I should train tho. Fuck I lost my sword and i can't waste any time, what do we have here. Oh, an oar."
Due to all the oars on the beach leading up to him, I'd definitely say the Oar.
The oar was actually a reference to musashi. He supposedly carved a wooden sword from an oar during a boat trip to an island, which he then used for a duel on the shore. Which is why the oar phase takes place on a dock.
A sword is more than just a blade.
It's even better playing the game. I'm still stuck on this guy but it's very fun and the music is what got me to play it in the first place.
I also played Furi purely because I heard the music from it. I knew nothing about the game when I started it, and it's still one of the best games I've ever, ever played.
You know it's going to be bad when the boss is basically a recolor of you.
It's not that hard to do it hitless (because you don't really have the choice, he hits like a truck), I don't get what you're talking about
exactly
The tedium of eternity can only be matched by an equally endless task
Self improvement it matters not how good you are now only that you put effort into surpassing yourself tomorrow
Probably my fav fight, next to the Chain and the Hand.
and the line (well the fight was tedious but the character was awesome)
It's probably the best fight in terms of projectiles, but i'm really into the close and countering type's. Which is why I despise the Star lmao.
+James Atkins I can get behind that. xD
Kroatowa Cheers lol
Idk why but I loved the Song fight.
This guy... man I loved this guy, he kept me motivated when I was about ready to quit the game. That oar is something else man I swear
"Tell me something, do you parry?"
Me: ...no
"You will"
Me:...Fuuuuuuu-
Fight is Sam vs. Raiden, but the parry is Monsoon vs. Raiden.
Even though I got the living shit beat out of me,I love this boss,it pushed me to go beyond my limits and challenge myself,it really gave me..
Something Memorable
Kojiro tooks his revenge I guess.
I associate this song with cold perseverance, effort, pain.
Perfect music for excrutiating workouts
