As a portuguese I feel like our country is being way too romanticised...
DO come to Portugal if you are retired or have plans to work remotely
DON´T come to Portugal if you have no income outside of Portugal, salaries here are impossible to live on, and if by any chance you find a job on a very high demand field (Software Engineering in my case) taxes will get a really big portion of it (just as high or higher than the richer european countries).
The cost of living here has increased A LOT in the last 5 years and the salaries haven't.
People being easygoing might look like a good thing, and it might be in some cases, but when your cable provider is "easygoing" when fixing stuff or your mailman or your kid's teacher, or your government employee... It isn't as much fun.
You also pretty much need a car in Portugal because of how "easygoing" the public transportation is here. In Lisbon there are parked cars EVERYWHERE and construction work because of the recent housing boom.
There is also a recent "hate" of foreigners here from the lower class as they can't cope with getting paid the same and rents being twice as high because of the massive influx of people with a LOT more money.
I don't hate my country but I am forced to leave soon because I will be finishing a masters in a high demand field and getting paid sub 1k€/month while rent in Lisbon for a single bedroom apartment is 500+€, the electricity and fuel are the highest price in Europe and everything is rapidly rising. I am either living with my parents forever or not ever saving any money. This is Portugal for the portuguese, we work more than we should, get paid less than we should, watch the news tell us that we have good beaches or something, and calling negativism pointing out our obvious flaws.

    • @lauritasantos7738
      @lauritasantos7738 4 года назад +6

I do understand your point of view, but a single bedroom apartment for 500+€ is not that bad. I lived in Cambridge, UK for about 2 years and paid 660€ for a semi-detached house with a mezzanino as a bedroom in the country side. It took me 1 hour to get to the city center. In regarding of your salary, I must admit it is lower than the majority of the countries in Europe. Still, Portugal is a lovely country. Please, do come live in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro to be more precise, and you will see what it is to struggle to survive. Best wishes!

@@lauritasantos7738 I know that housing in Lisbon isn't that expensive compared to central and northern Europe and I'm not saying life is bad here compared to developing countries, however it still sucks when for example Spain has a similar or sometimes lower cost of living and a taco Bell employee there makes more money than me with a master's here..

@@Yogi5D The association between the EU and crumbling economies is quite dangerous, there are many reasons for the slower growth of European economies. European countries are mostly welfare states where the high taxes "shield" the people from the economic variations with the downside of making the almost exponential growth of the US and China impossible here.
Europe has been "collapsing" for centuries and it has nothing to do with the EU. Most countries have huge social security expenses because of an aging population and no real incentive for companies to be there; that being said there are some exceptions: Ireland was completely destroyed economically and recovered completely because of the more capitalistic aproach. Europe needs change and a more unified EU visa policy as right now there are countries giving visas away (Like Portugal) and countries trying to stop more people from coming here.
The EU needs more unification and cooperation in order to reach the status of "too big to fail" of the US.
Completely agree with Portugal falling to pieces, everything has gone to shit and "economic growth" here seems to mean higher taxes and prices, rising the minimum wage to get votes and ignoring the middle class

The Portuguese government has offered tax exemptions for a long time (I think it's ten years) for anyone who takes their income from abroad to Portugal.
In addition, the country's cost of living is lower than other nearby European countries.
Education up to high school is free. Regarding health, small fees are paid for using hospital services.
The country is also one of the safest in the world.
For Americans, Germans, English and French (where retirement is good) it is very worthwhile to move to Portugal.
Foreigners prefer the warmest climate in the Algarve and the busiest life in Lisbon.
I recommend visiting Braga. It is a city with cheaper properties, but still with good infrastructure (health, education, services, etc.).
The city does not have a metro and airport, but it is 30 minutes driving from Porto.

@@gabriellarosa5015 Although we are Brazilians, I think that most people looking for this channel speak English. So, we can help more people this way.
I'm Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro. We visited Portugal in 2018 and we visited 32 cities in 20 days. Thus, we managed to get a good sense of the differences between regions.
My wife and son already have portuguese nationality. My naturalization is still in process. We plan on moving to Portugal in the future, but I am still far from retirement. Even so, I have been trying to help people with information about life there.
For Brazilians, the language issue is much easier. On the other hand, this is the biggest challenge for another foreigners, but this is not serious. In addition, many Portuguese people speak English, especially in the most tourist regions.
In general, Portugal is a great option for European, American and Canadian retirees. Adaptation to the climate is not difficult (for Brazilians it is not so easy...). The cost of living is low compared to other European countries.
Rent and purchase have become more expensive due to the arrival of so many people. It is the law of “supply and demand”. However, with the departure of many immigrants due to the economic crisis created by the pandemic, prices are expected to drop slightly.
Generally, retirees do not want to ask long-term questions, but providing financing can even be cheaper than rent. Bank interest rates are much lower than in Brazil. So there are also few rental options.
I recommend visiting the country if possible, but do not have “tourist eyes”. Go to the supermarket, take public transport, visit neighborhoods without tourist attractions. After all, your day to day will be as a resident, not as a tourist.
If you want help with information there, you can ask freely.

My previous concerns for going were my daughter’s education and opportunities but I feel she’ll do well there, they have international schools too. My reason is to look out for my parents, they’re getting older and I worry about them so much especially times like these when you can’t just jump on a flight. I’ve come to realise that the quality of life there is so much better, people are warmer and kinder, the weather is amazing as well as the food and where my mum lives is stunning, there are more pros than cons. I’m hoping as I have dual nationality our residency permits will be fast tracked, nervous but excited to start a new life ♥️

      - a lot of beautiful beaches
      - a lot of cultural and historical spots, since the long history of the country existing since 1139.

If you are moving to Castelo Branco I hope you know that the city is very hot during the summer. For people from the northern countries can be difficult to adapt to the fact thats always very, very hot in the summer(think 38 degrees at midnight), just put sunblock every time you leave the house. I lived there for 4 years for school and love it,hope you like it too. The city has a very friendly environment between the students and the locals. If the schools can start normally and you stay during the school year, you will see a lot of street parties, join in, you will have fun and make friends.

so a brief of the robbery. we were in the Hotel porto(obviously the city of porto)4th floor corner room,so cool . no way a robber would be able to get us up there NOT.
so i am sleeping nude as usual,i am dreaming i hear a creak.creak, stepping i dream its by the door,i look up and a young man is in our room,i jump up and chase, i tackle him in the hall and he drops my wifes' purse. i chase him down the stairs tackle again, and box with him he was flinging his shoes at me which he was carrying for quietness i guess. he beans me on the ear and runs,i got him in the face twice,he dropped his pack of (believe it or not )camel cigs. i still have them. a lady shreiks maybe because of my manliness heh, likely in full flagrante' heh and off the guy goes . i go back to the room dress with my wife whimpering an emotional wreck. she didn't even back me up. what??
so i go to the front desk and the shreiker woman says there he is, and is telling the story to the desk lady who doesn't even hardly care. she says it was likely a romanian immigrant.
oh, forgot to say, the old hotels don't have self locking doors and we didn't lock it. it takes a key each time, we felt so safe we didn't, not smart. but we loved portugal and i got a great story and TLC for being the hero. what a good ending.

Portugal is a country with a good quality of life (public education and health, security, climate, etc.) and lower costs compared to its European neighbors.
However, the cost of living is also low because salaries are not high. Even so, in general, people live with dignity. For this reason, many young Portuguese people look for neighboring countries in search of better salaries.
Thus, over the past few years, the government has offered tax and visa incentives to immigrants who can contribute to the heating of the economy.
This scenario made the country attractive for those who come from other places, bringing income also from abroad. On the other hand, this strategy also caused a real estate warming up for purchase and even more for sale.
In the south of Portugal, in the so-called Algarve, prices have skyrocketed even more, as foreign retirees have sought the mild climate and the tax exemption.
The busiest regions, such as Lisbon and Porto, naturally went through this somewhat speculative wave. Some call it a "bubble", but I don't think so since the growth has always been continuous. This movement took place across the country, with greater intensity in regions with some more attractiveness.

Hi, is it an exemption on foreign income?

    • @alessandrosilva4441
      @alessandrosilva4441 4 года назад +1

@@temprmj1 The Portuguese government has offered tax exemptions for a long time (I think it's ten years) for anyone who takes their income from abroad to Portugal.
