- Sick notes on the trumpet or on the flugelhorn! What do you mean with that?
So-called sick tones are tones that intonate poorly. These are tones that intonate poorly on the instrument from the start. First and foremost, these are the notes: d1 (handle 1/3) and des1 / c sharp1 (handle 1/2/3). When building our instruments, the instrument makers make a compromise: In order for many tones to be in tune, they accept two to three tones which are less in tune. The solution to the problem is very simple: the trigger, i.e. the third move. In order to bring the mentioned tones back into the mood, we have to operate it and lengthen our instrument a little so that these tones become a little deeper. The d1 is about 1cm, while the des1 / c sharp1 is about 2 to 2.5cm. This can of course also turn out differently, as this depends heavily on your instrument, the best thing to do is to control it with a tuner.
But of course there are not only the instrument-specific sick tones but also tones which intone worse due to our playing. Especially the low notes, i.e. from c1 down to F sharp or G flat. These notes are often played with little air and very loosely, so that the mood slides further down. In this position it is important to control the air pressure / air flow and the lip tension. A tip from me: Practice these tones in the mezzoforte and with a tuner so that you can always control how these tones intone.
Another note that is often less intonated is the a2. With this tone, some trumpeters like to use the auxiliary handle, the third valve. A big disadvantage: the tone a2 sounds a bit more dull and defensive with the third valve. In my opinion, the a2 should mainly be played with grip 1/2, if necessary you can correct it with the first move.
The tone e2 often brings with it a similar problem. There's even one more handle here! We can pick the note e2 with 0, 1/2 or 3. Depending on the grip, the instrumental sound changes considerably here as well.

Hallo Niko! Ich bin schon vor einiger Zeit auf Deine tollen Trompeten Coaching Videos gestossen. fand sie schon immer sehr gut. Schaue sie nur zu selten... Jetzt bin ich auf dieses gestossen, und ja ich habe auch etliche Intonationsprobleme seitens / mit meiner Bach VBS1. - Ich habe letztens meinen Freunden Ave Maria vorgespielt mit XML-Klavierbegleitung aufgenommen. - Oh ja, was haben die die Intonationsfehler erkannt! ;-) - Ich werde jetzt auch wieder regelmäßig mit einem Stimmgerät arbeiten!!!
