    This was the first time I had ever seen DCI, just on PBS, but this entire year is locked into my brain as it, I taped it on VHS, and I think I watched the broadcast at least 1,000 times, I was a Freshman in H.S., thought I had gold in that VCR, auditiioed in 95, got cut, then marched in the 1996 Phantom Regiment Euphonimun.

    If I'm not mistaken they are playing the Yamaha Corps Custom snare drum. I own this exact drum and it is in pristine condition.
    This was the drum that Yamaha manufactured from 1990-92 to take the pressure of the newly introduced kevlar drum heads.
    Soon afterward, the free floating design became the norm and this drum was no longer produced.

    • @PercussionImprovisations

      I'd love to see some pictures of the drum! They do look unique now that you mention it.

    • @DennisJohnsonDrummer
      @DennisJohnsonDrummer Год назад

      @@PercussionImprovisations I have several pics on my computer. Send me your e-mail and I'll send them. The drum was found at
      a local surplus warehouse and was played only by the 34th Army Band out of Iowa. No youngsters ever played or
      used this drum, so that's why it's in such great condition.

    • @JohnSmith-zi9or
      @JohnSmith-zi9or Год назад

      From what I understand (I played tenors), these were prototypes. We actually "egg"ed the hoops because the metal they used wasn't tough enough for the kevlar heads. Techs from Yamaha met us during the season to see the warping of the shells. I think they received a second batch and that fixed the problem.

  • @ryan_1314

    banger show, but I find it hilarious how there's an 8 person cymbal line, so when the snare line plays the cymbals they literally just have to hold up one. Not that well versed in older dci shows though, so idk if that was the norm at that time

    • @JohnSmith-zi9or
      @JohnSmith-zi9or Год назад +3

      It was very common to see cymbal lines pre-90s. Scouts had cymbal lines probably longer than anyone else.

    • @dbrattperc
      @dbrattperc Год назад +5

      One of the '92 Mad-Plates here checking in! Eight cymbal players was *definitely* unusual and part of the hype of the drum line and show that year. More typical at the time was a 4 - 5 player line and even then not every corps marched cymbals as it was starting to be phased out. Fun fact: 1992 was the first year DCI allowed cymbal lines to compete in the Individual and Ensemble competition (I&E). SCV, who was really awesome just barely beat us but didn't stick around for the evening showcase concert which featured the winners so as runners-up we played the concert outside at the Wisconsin State Capitol on Wednesday of finals week. Nothing like playing for thousands of fans on your home turf; it was pretty unforgettable! There used to be a video floating around RUclips of that Madison cymbal ensemble performance but in my quick search, I couldn't come up with it.
