    As an American Marklin collector, it's about time that there was a channel that discussed locomotives, but from the German perspective.

      There are Märklin collectors outside of Germany? I always thought that Märklin siding make enough rolling stock from outside of Germany. Do you collect German stuff or the little and very expensive American stuff? Well I’d guess that it is German stuff because you wrote this, but still, why?

    Very interesting design, in the US a few railroads did something similar. We called them "doghouse" tenders.

      Quite similar naming to the "Rabbit Boxes" in German control cars. Love it!

    I absolutely love these. Short and sweet, but with a lot of love and information crammed in. There are many youtubers who focus on planes and cars but you are the first I've found that does trains with 3d animation/models. Keep it up.

    Great video. Thank you for making it for the English speaking audience. I model German trains in g scale but don’t speak German. That being so, much of the context in the old videos from Germany are lost on me.

    As an English speaking HO Germany modeler, I fell in love with the BR50 Kab. After all these years, I still think the BR50 Kab pulling a long train of E wagen is my favorite.
    Have you seen the "backpack" cabin prototype? That would have been a ride while running tender first.

      Indeed, a BR 50 with cabin tender and a long row of E wagons is a classic! And yes, I do know the backpack prototype. Its cab is pretty much pushed out as far as possible, almost a bit scary riding in it tender first...

    I'm a member of the Steam Department of the Illinois Railway Museum, and we have a locomotive that's quite similar to the DR Class 50. The "Russian Decapods" were built under contract for the Imperial Russian Railways during the Great War, but after the Bolshevik Revolution, a couple hundred were completed but never delivered; the new Communist government concluded a separate peace treaty with Germany, and refused to pay the Imperial government's debts. So these were sold to US railroads instead. It's of similar size and power to a Class 50, and ours (which still operates) has a little cabin on the tender deck. Not as elaborate as these, it's just big enough for a seat, meant to give the head-end brakeman a place to ride, out of the way of the engine crew.

    Vielen Dank für die sehr hilfreichen Auskunft über die Entwicklung und die Mängel des Kabinentenders der Baureihe 50. Dies wird nirgendwo anders erklärt, obwohl es sich offensichtlich um einen Ersatz des Gepäckwagens handelt. Ich hatte gelesen, dass die Fahrt in der Kabine aufgrund der Wassermasse und der daraus resultierenden Kondenswasserbildung nie wünschenswert war.

    Though I'm an American, I have been interested in European, particularly German railroading for a long time. It is really nice to finally learn about the various locomotives and cars, and your models are breath taking in detail and beauty. I hope you have a BR 23 on your list somewhere.

    Thank you for the info. On a different subject, safety of transported load. You views of the class 50 with chemical tanker loads.
    If the loads are explosive, volatile, acidic, alkaline or otherwise harmful to the environment or peoples then there should be a barrier wagon behind the locomotive and possibly at the end of the train before the guards van. The barrier wagon should be substantial and protect the crew from 'issues' with the load, and protect the load from the exhaust items from the loco.

    Fine video. in 1969... the real cabines might lost its formal function. also the first model whee Fleischmann kicks off in N gauge. with cabine. As N driver I have a 50 ith cabine rolling. I like this very unusual feature at the tender. It adds much tenderness and raw breathes

    The D&RGW had something simular on their narrow guage lines (they ran 3ft guage, & standard guage), notably with there C125 type. No tenders in preservation on the Durango & Silverton, or other tourist lines, or static displays have examples of these tender types. For a frame of reference, the D&RGW narrow guage ended operations shortly after world war 3, while the standard guage operated 'till the 1990's, and after buying the Southern Pacific (also ending operations in the 1990's when both (still independent companies) were bought by the Union Pacific. The famous part of the old D&RGW in the Rocky Mountains operates still to this day, under the name Durango & Silverton.

    Echoing what people have already said, thank you for making this excellent content! I model US railroads in the 1940s, but am greatly drawn to German wartime and post-war steam and hope to have a BR50 Kab in my collection one day. Having the history and design of these fine loks outlined with a visually rich and engaging narrative is wonderful, and I have subscribed for more.

    I always thought that here in Britain we were late to the party in terms of ending mainline steam (the use of steam locos in the industrial sector lasted into the 70s and I think maybe even near the eighties in some cases), so I was surprised to find out that mainline steam in West Germany lasted until 1977! And to think that Germany had been at the forefront of developing diesel traction in the 30s with the likes of the Flying Hamburger. I guess that WW2 and the split into East and West Germany might have played a part in steam power lasting so long?
    The cabs on the tenders look a little odd but honestly, they're pretty cool! We didn't do any of those in the UK as far as I know! It's nice to find a channel that talks about German locos, I don't know much about them but I do quite like them, particularly their whistles, they sound quite ghostly (that and I've always wanted to ride on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, that's on the bucket list to do at some point!).

      Indeed, both the war and the division into East and West were a huge setback for the German railways. But also the war preparations before 1939 already slowed down the development of modern traction enormously, as there was little to no support from the regime for civilian transportation. By the way, in Eastern Germany, mainline steam lasted even longer - until 1988.

      @@steelbridgemodels That's mad! 20 years after mainline steam ended in Britain (August 1968) East German steam was still going! I assume some of that's simply a consequence of the different policies between the communist and capitalist governments.

    The debate stands, whether the P8 Wannentender or the BR50 Kabinentender is the ugliest.

      This must be one from the austrian railway. The german railway build only cabins on box tenders.

      As it has been already said, this was probably an Austrian machine, as the ÖBB fitted many tub tenders with cabs.

    Hey i have an old Märklin DRG 2-6-0 and would love to know what type of engine it is (or 1-3-0 if you dont use the whyte wheel arrangements like the French)

      Probably a BR 24, Märklin produced them in large numbers.

      Correct wheel arrangement means "Achsfolge" in UIC logic would be 2'C.

    I’m a British steam modeller, but I love these German 2-10-0’s and am looking for any excuse to run one on my BR Western/Midland Region 1960’s layout. Sometimes I think it might be easier to model SNCF (I live in France)
    Oh sod it. It’s my Railway, I’ll run what I like…😂😂😂.
    Think I’ll go see what’s on offer on eBay in the way of DR/DB 2-10-0’s…

      It's a digital render, but planned to be 3D-printed in 1:50 scale.

    Why are you talking about diesel-electric locomotives? The diesel locomotives that superseded the steam locomotives in Germany were diesel-hydraulic!
