I believe it to be essential to clean the head joint bore so the cork doesn't pick up debris when installing. There is also a debate on whether to bevel the crown end of the cork or not. I tend to do so. I also like to taper a wee bit when sanding to simulate the profile of the head joint. Thanks for posting.

I did for mine too. A tapered cord for a tapered head joint is said to be best by some.🙂
Couldn't you use a little cork grease over the paraffin and then use the screw-on crown to fine tune the adjustment upward? I also suggest polishing the metal disk to a mirror finish while it's on the bench motor, just for the aesthetic value.
