    Thank you. I've got a single mother neighbor who's daughter is renting a flute from a local music store. I've picked up a students flute that needed a crown at a locàl thrift store, and had no idea how to fix it... Thanks to you, this Christmas she's getting a usable flute of her very own. THANK YOU!

      The flute may still need a “clean, oil, and regulation” by a professional repair person so that the keys open and close as they should. OR check out this guy’s videos for doing that and see how you do. Good luck!

    Underrated RUclips channel. I appreciate everything you’ve taught me so far!

    Loved the video. Explained & demonstrated very well & clearly. So well that this risk taker "do-it-your-selfer" will be taking my daughter's to a professional as I do not have all the necessary equipment & supplies. Additionally to invest into something that wouldn't be done often wouldn't be a value add for me. Again thank you!!! Your video helped me make the right choice for our needs.

    Years ago, when I was a teenager, I would make replacement cork pieces from wine corks in between visits to the flute repair person. I think it was Colvig's.

    Subbed! Flautalee here.
    Just to clarify ~ we move the head joint in or out a small amount from the body of the flute for tuning. We do not push in or pull out the cork for tuning. Otherwise, we’ll break the wax seal, the cork will dry out and it will need to be replaced. Ugh.
    Normally, I have my head joint cork replaced about every year. But now, some music stores have long waiting lists, so this is a great tutorial.
    Just one question. I don’t have the fancy tool to spin the cork around for sanding. May I hand sand it with a coarse sand paper, then with a medium sand paper, finally with a fine sand paper?
    Thank you!

    General question, why is it necessary to have the cork at a certain length (and also what length should I have it to)

    You make amazing videos :) I have 2 questions about the headjoint cork. What's the purpose of the "upper screw" (I think the word you used is washer? English is not my first language...)? And why do you use 2 different types of glue?
    Thank you!!!

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 года назад +1

      The threaded washer is to hold the cork firmly into place so it does not come unglued after a little while. I use cork cement on the one side because it creates a very strong bond. I use the liquid shellac on the other one so the threaded washer will still rotate after it has made contact with the cork. If I used contact cement, the threaded washer would stop rotating as soon as it made contact.

      @@TheBrassandWoodwindShop oh, I didn't realise contact cement was so strong. Thank you for the clarification!

      The upper screw is to help with positioning the cork perfectly.

    How did you get that cork back out of the headjoint when you slid it in to test it! Yowzers

    Bench motors are so expensive. Is there any substitute? For example, could I use a power drill or something similar to a bench motor that is much cheaper?

    • @bgclarinet
      @bgclarinet 9 месяцев назад

      I have used a drill before. I set the base in my lap, and the trigger against the edge of my bench. When I lean forward, it pushes the trigger and I can use both hands to sand the cork.

    Congratulations. I want to ask you something. What about the quality of the cork. Is there a better one to buy? Is it critical for the flute resonance? I feel my new flute has less resonance that my old flute. (I know that it can happen sometimes ) but Let me tell you, the pads have been replaced and they are new. I supposed that maybe is the bad quality of the cork or something that can be failing there into the headjoint. It's not losing air to anywhere. It is very tight and it looks like new too. Some recommendations??My flute is a Yamaha 361. You can listen to it on my channel. Thank you

      I do not think that the quality of the cork would make much difference if it there is a good seal and it does not leak. I heard before, but I have never seen it for myself, that if the head cork is too tight, it can deaden the sound.

      @@TheBrassandWoodwindShop thank u for taken the time to answer me. I will see what i can do. Maybe i will buy another headjoint to replace the one i have.

    Uh…having the head joint vertical on the table, as you are physically forcing the cork to move is a REALLy good way to both hurt yourself AND damage the head joint if it were to fall.
