Pretty big difference in numbers here. The French really made the Austrians pay dearly to end the battle on such a close tie. France Austria Total Deployed: 7466 12276 Losses: 5634 7626 % of Team Lost: 75% 62% Friendly Fire: 445 738 % of Team FF: 6% 6% Enemy Killed: 6888 5189 Killed/Lost Ratio: 1.22 0.68
In real life the Old guard did hold off an Austrian column that could’ve changed the tied of the battle of Marengo but the Old guard held fast whilst cav attacked their flanks and withdrew in an orderly fashion at least that’s how I heard it but from what I looked up the Old guard moved in to Pearce the Austrian flanks
You can't take the NTW3 battles too literal, it would more like a Kriegsspiel, with each unit represents exact historical unit in 1:7. and the depth of the formation would represent real situation the concentration of a unit in a certain area. Like if you strech a unit thin it would represent a wide skirmish line, which would be less moral and less fire concentration, while column represent the concentrating of a unit in a certain area to do the line fight, project more fire in a certain area. You would find it unrealistic when you take it too literal, as you would see even 4th row can fire, but if you take it just as a representation of unit concentration, many thing in this mode would make sense.

I wonder, why don't they deploy their units into line when they're shooting,...always in column,....that results in some scary artillery casulties

A lot of friendly fire by the Austrians on themselves and not enough fire against the French...
