leave it to Idle to rip the band-aid and put salt on the wound while also making it a gawddamn BOP. Soyeon’s brain is to be studied and admired because she is a litteral GENIUS.
The Music industry needs more Soyeons, Needs more (G)-Idles.
And people need to understand the message, especially the younger generations ( im 42 so ) Being a Queen is a state of mind, not something material. And a Queen dosent have to tell you she is a Queen, just like the Lion dosent need to tell you he’s a Lion, when you see him/her you know it.

G-idle has always been a group with substance. What I mean is there's actual meaning and depth to their songs. Considering that the time that we have now has been the most surface level its ever been with trends and social media, I appreciate the realistic commentary about the social problem we have. Some do it in KPOP but it sounds unrelatable, sugarcoated and even distant. Here, we have soyeon, someone who actually suffered from trying to fit in the norm, not to say that none of the others didn't but soyeon had it worse. The ending of the song was sad, the message that perhaps she was trying to write for herself or for others didn't reached the person who truly needs to read it which is HER. The room closed before it even got inside. I feel like the message of the song beside the message about trying to fit in and trying to change yourself into something you're not even though its harmful for your mental health is that SOYEON WISHED THERE WAS SOMEONE TO TELL HER TO NOT TO TRY TO FIT IN BUT JUST FOLLOW HER HEART. In the end, she ended up going through surgeries and that is the saddest most realistic thing that applies to everybody. Sometimes the sincerest most needed advice and pat in the back that e need to hear is from ourselves but we don't hear them because we're too caught up with what's trendy or "okay" in society's eyes that we forget that the only ones who will truly stick with us is ourselves, hence, we should take care of our selves the most.

This hit different. Way different. I think far more different than any of their other songs that touch on controversial topics has before.
This shit made me cry, man.
Even as a guy, I've struggled so hard with loving myself as I am, so this song really hit different for me and I was in tears watching it because it's so good. It speaks such a strong and powerful message, and about constantly chasing a "perfect image", and how harmful it can be, and how deeply important self-love is.

I don't think you're wrong about (G)I-DLE coming back aggressive after the hiatus. From everything I've read the loss of Soojin basically was devastating to everyone, Soyeon in particular. Add to the fact the environment around CUBE was "well (G)I-DLE is over, lets look into doing solo activities" really made them feel lost. I've heard them all say that there was this infamous video call all of them had (because CUBE separated them while they were in a crisis on top of everything) where they were even considering calling it quits. It was Shuhua who basically said "NO!" and reminded them that this was their dream and they had more say as singers. This put a spark in them and all of them basically decided "If we're going to go out, let's go out with a bang." So TOMBOY happened, but along with that came all those b-tracks on I NEVER DIE that was just fueled by anger, sadness, and desperation. That real emotion was felt by the public and I guess the rest is history.
So I do feel that their anger has fueled a lot of what they've done since they've come back. Losing Soojin was unfair. They're company treating them like the plague was unfair. The industry itself is unfair. Being snubbed for their achievements is unfair. Society is unfair. When artist have a burning passion, it only makes better music because it MEANS something to them.
I still think (G)I-DLE are still operating on "do or die" mode, even though they are viewed as a top group now. Given they were the only established 4th gen girl group to be able to stand next to the monster rookie class of 2022, tells me that they're not afraid to take risks and aren't afraid of failure. They never were trend chasers nor did they have a sound that was tied to a singular gimmick. Because of that I think that's what allowed them to evolve and adapt to the changing times, while many last year didn't/couldn't. They weren't just keeping up with the monster rookies, but they were setting trends. So I like this more aggressive version of (G)I-DLE. Out of loss and pain came something wonderful.

Soojin's departure really changed them, and since then, we can feel through their songs how mature they became, how hard they've been hurt and how they're angry against toxic netizens influence through social medias. This has been a small death for (G)I-DLE, and for neverland too, but thanks to their resilience and how strong they are, they rebirth like a phoenix with 'I'LL NEVER DIE' and since then, they rise up, more and more, day after day, release after release....
About this M/V, I love how the only moment Soyeon is happy, it's when she's offline, just listening music on a old walkman, far away from any social network.
About monday, hope you'll wait for Cube to put lyrics on the M/Vs : they usually post the M/V without captions, and then add it few hours later. Watching a (G)I-DLE song without lyrics is just so useless 😉

yeah soyeon said that she approached Tomboy (and probably all subsequent cbs) as if they were redebuting as a new group. and you really can tell, they are still idle, but not (g)i-dle. that version of the group ended with soojin's departure. having said that, i really love how they still keep soojin and her legacy in idle alive with subtle little hints, such as the 6 balloons in Tomboy, the entire marylin concept with nxde, the marylin drawing/butterfly tattoos in allergy etc.

I wasn't going to add anything else, but your Soojin question was too thought-provoking. Losing her from the group clearly had an impact on Soyeon. She has openly talked about thinking they can't recover from it, and that their only chance was to go all out. I feel like it had also made her decide that she doesn't need to be cautious anymore - she had nothing to lose because you can lose everything, any time, for no reason. I think it also made her, rightly, pretty angry.
I'm sure the difference in how the guys were treated made an impact. It may be why she has written less about relationships in her title tracks and focused more on feminist issues and general social commentary, though I feel that she was already beginning to move in that direction with songs like"Lion" and "Oh my god".
I have an insane amount of respect for her.

Yes, I agree with your view on the hiatus and all the idle content we've got since then. I also think that era sparked some type of willing (specially for soyeon) to comment on the gender barriers, the female social struggle and a feminist commentary over all. I love it, but it also makes me wonder how many more injustices they faced behind the scenes to make them do it then, which is worrying sometimes. It seemed like they had enough 'cause they've had empowering concepts before (lion, oh my god, etc.) but i'm glad that they are more straightforward now, like you cannot doubt they are a very feminist group and i'm very much all for it. Loved your reaction!

Notice when Soyeon runs out of the plastic surgeons office and meets her Ideal Self (Minnie), glasses aside the only difference in their outfits is Soyeon is wearing a huge Cross necklace and Minnie (her perfected version and the top of the modern day food chain) is wearing a large gold Pentagram. Wow okay I'm pissed cause I had to type this twice but it could help people compartmentalize and analyze the video so here we go again lol this is long but the pecking order of the girls is very interesting:
    - Minnie is an "actual" celebrity/idol, the top of the modern day food chain, she's basically the Kardashian of the group; big enough to even have her own daytime TV Show, the richest, the most famous, with the most followers, that can get the hot guy that even other pretty girls can't get. However we see that this is obviously unfulfilling as she has no real human connections or even friends, we never see her hang out with a girlfriend once, she is alone at the party and the guy that she's dating that Miyeon also likes..well it's not a real relationship at all it's a sham relationship which is shown more in her intro video but their relationship reminds me of the one of the protagonist and her boyfriend in the film Helter Skelter (an AMAZING film that deals with the same themes but on a much deeper, darker and more real level than G(idle) is allowed to do as idols in the Kpop industry). Everyone is jealous of Minnie but she is envious of the people with authentic love in their life as we see in the beginning; the people in the beginning represent something we as humans used to have but since the invention of phones and technology has largely disappeared except in 3rd world countries; connection. This is why most people in the modern age just end up like Soyeon falling into the Matrix instead of getting out of it (Her character especially from her character intro video reminds me of the lyrics to Sia's Big Girls Cry; "it's lonely at the top, blackouts and airplanes..I wake up alone, etc."
    - Miyeon is an influencer; she does not have old money or celebrity money; she has a more shaky income and influence (who knows where she'll be income and relevancy wise in 10 years compared to Minnie for example). She is the type that posts unboxing and haul videos (as seen in her character introduction), sponsored posts, affiliate links and has an amazon storefront. She is very pretty which is what has even allowed her to become an influencer (a commentary on how you have to be pretty or BECOME pretty to make money or be treated a certain way in the modern world; (once again Soyeon has definitely seen Helter Skelter) But Miyeon doesn't have as much influence and isn't AS pretty by public standards as Minnie. She's the type that gets branded and designer things as "gifts"...as long as she posts a video first saying how much she loves it, how amazing it is and how you too ! need to go and buy it !(meanwhile she got it for free)
    - Yuqi and Shuhua have a bougie ATTITUDE. In the 2000's there was this very common theme in movies and books (The Clique Series, The Ashleys, Mean Girls, The Cheetah Girls, etc.) where there's a rich, pretty, popular group of girls but within the group though the majority of the girls were rich there was usually at least 1 that was either middle class or even straight up poor like Dorinda from The Cheetah Girls. They work at a Victoria's Secret PINK type of place so they can get discounts on the clothing there (remember this video is throwback so think about how Victoria Secret was THE standard for girls and women and one of the biggest and most influential companies in the entire world in the 2000's, especially PINK for teens and younger women) They borrow Miyeon's designer stuff like Chanel and Fendi to take fake flex pics for Instagram that in turn make Soyeon, who represents your average girl/woman, insecure and hate herself. In fact they are some of the most fake in the entire group; when they go to the party they ditch their best friend Miyeon because they are entranced by ACTUAL celebrities/rich people who they proceed to follow around and gawk at all night. To show how brutal it is Shuhua then does the same thing to Yuqi and ditches her to try and befriend girls who are higher up the social and economic food chain. There is also some commentary here on the pecking order of races globally among humans; in real life White is at the top and everything else comes after and Asian countries uphold this standard with an iron grip as much as any other country. Multiple times they show in the video the pretty white woman being the standard or beating them out or having what they want (at the party, at the end when they wave to the girls boyfriend, etc.) there are no asian guys in the entire video all the guys they want, like and date are young attractive white guys. It just reiterates that the girls are still not good enough because on top of a class order there's a money order and a racial order that they don't fit, though they and everyone else are FORCING themselves to fit it. This is a great way to display the mental exhaustion of always trying to keep up and the game of 'you're never good enough'.
    - Soyeon is your average girl or young woman living in the Matrix of the modern world. She always only sees the facade that's put up, just as we do in real life. The party for example is actually full of fakeness, drama, backstabbing and loneliness but all she can see is the glamorous 'we're better than you pictures' that they keep posting on Instagram. She sees Yuqi with a bunch of bags shopping in designer clothes but she does not know that the bags are empty, Yuqi can't afford those things either and the designer stuff she's wearing isn't even hers. She (like most people as of 2023) does not have a lot of money which is reiterated multiple times. For example she has an old flip phone. Even though the video is throwback all the other girls have Blackberry phones which in the 2000's were some of the most expensive phones you could get. Not only that but she has the same phone the little kids have reiterating that she's not pretty cool and sexy enough, she's like a kid (the childish bras, the stuffed animals in her room, etc.) She can't afford, once again like the majority of girls and women, the thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars it costs to make yourself look like the Karina's Wonyoungs and yes, Minnie's of the world. One of the darkest parts of this is the fact that when she's told how much the surgeries will cost she is devastated because there's clearly no way she can afford it...yet at the end we see her going into surgery. I think this one went over many people's heads...but just ask yourself what she did to get $10,000 extra dollars so quickly. There is nothing you can do in this world that will instantly get you 10 Grand without hurting either yourself or someone else, if there were we would all just be doing that. I think it's pretty clear that this comeback was clear inspired by Helter Skelter so I'll let you figure out what she probably did to get the money as I don't want to spoil the film. there's also butterfly imagery EVERYWHERE in this comeback..and once again..Helter Skelter, seriously, I kind of want to make a "Symbolism you probably Missed" post tbh it is packed throughout this whole comeback so far and the title song and video haven't even dropped yet..like wow
Also the scene with Shuhua giving the class used as a commentary on all of these classes and courses that are now commonplace for women and girls to "improve themselves" and become more feminine and more attractive usually so they can get an attractive guy/and or a guy with a lot of money...just wow

I didn't really watch the character introductions and was a little confused about the relationship between some of them (Miyeon, Yuqi and Shuhua mainly), so this was very helpful, thank you.
The only Helter Skelter I was familiar with was the 1976 movie about Charles Manson, but I did find articles about the manga and film after a quick search. Sounds interesting. The ending of this MV gave me a very uneasy feeling about what's coming in the TT.

in terms of what i would consider the major bullying allegations and the rank of most to least affected (mind you, we are talking about actual repercussions for the member/group not smth that never went to court or went further than a few bad articles.)
    1) Soojin-hands down the worst. had 'accusers' going to the media, had an actress lie on her name to further her own career, essentially has been completely removed from the public eye, only VERY recently has there been any remotely positive posts about her on pann, and even then those have a lot of downvotes. kicked out of her group permanently and ended her company contract. Idle themselves had to take a whole break from group activities for over 400 days. all six of the girls went through depression and unrest over what their future could be.
    2) garam-the youngest on this arbitrary list, and was a minor when this all went down. company clearly knew about her record before debut and disgustingly decided to use her for their art (lsfm fallen angel concept along with the debut trailers of garam 'falling' from the sky? oh the lsfm creative team is evil). barely had a career for two weeks, is able to still go to school seemingly and has been public sightings. as far as how it affects the group, the members, but esp chaewon was expected to answer what they felt about the whole situation.
    3) Lia-I honestly can't decide if JYP handled it the best or not, but unlike Hybe or Cube, they did not stop Itzy's promotions during the time of the accusations nor the court case. this meant that Lia was at the receiving end of so much vitriol during any korea-based events and had people target things unrelated to the scandal (like her appearance or her dancing). though it was a hard few months, the benefit of this was that it made the company's trust in her clear, and once the court case was cleared, other than a few bad pann comments, Lia gained the trust of the public back. For the whole group, it's hard to say how much of this affected their lowering of popularity in korea, but that market is so fickle anyway. thankfully international midzys still are going strong and support itzy a lot for the scandal to not matter
    4) hyunjin-the only one on this list who had admitted to the accusations. met up with the accuser and settled things with an in-person meeting (and this is speculation but probably a lumpsum from jyp as well). had to go on hiatus for several months to reflect. stray kids as a group were already not super popular so though their popularity in korea did lessen, it didn't make much difference. hyunjin returned back to the group and from then had several opportunities to promote himself with dance opportunities and brand endorsements. straykids is objectively the most successful 4th gen group internationally in terms of streams, album sales and concerts and hyunjin is one of the most popular member. aside from a several month hiatus, most have forgiven him for his middle school behavior (and this is what should be the case for everyone!).
so yeah, i think theres a clear pattern but what do i know haha

I really appreciate you brought up the difference between Idle OT6 and OT5. Certainly there was a big shift from I Burn to I Never Die. I really see how their title track’s message shifted from either relationship-heavy topic (breakups like Hann or Hwaa, falling in love like Latata or Senorita) to love yourself (Tomboy and Nxde). I kind of miss the old artistry, but I think Idle post Soojin departure is like Idle in a mission, so I am okay with the new direction too.

hi kaia! long comment here i'm sorry in advance! i love watching your videos and i found very interesting what you said about soojin and the whole situation, while i understand that soojin's situation was unfair and she shouldn't have left gidle, i don't completely agree with the thought that male idols get away with it. for example hyunjin from skz was on hiatus for 3 months i believe before he came back and kpop fans even stays were asking to remove him from the group. members weren't allowed to talk about him or even mention him during that time. same happened with mingyu from svt. lucas from nct has been on hiatus for almost 2 years and has now been announced that he is leaving wayv and nct. lia from itzy had similar problems and she didn't leave the group. i think that while the kpop industry (and korea in general) are extremely unfair to women, most of the times companies are the ones who decide what the idol does and doesn't do and what happens to them. i think companies most of the time make decisions based on what people will think and what people want, how much money they are going to loose, etc instead of protecting their idols. what i'm trying to say is that i don't think most of the times it has to do with the idol but with the company, unfortunately companies are going to do what benefits them the most. cube is one of the worst companies imo but i'm glad they give gidle the liberty to make this kinda music, maybe is the beginning of a new era for kpop! i hope you don't find this disrespectful or anything (and sorry if there is any mistakes, english is not my first language)

I think Soyeon and the others definitely let loose when Soojin "left"the group. Like, I hate the s Korean small mind on how a female/male should be. Even in the USA, I hear "boys will be boys" even when the guy's over 30. Like, there social standard is still bias against women. Smh

@@babette5918 there’s a bit of confusion over what this ‘standard’ is, though. bc technically the one who fits south korea’s beauty standard is miyeon. but throughout the mv, they keep comparing themselves to more western people, which *could* reflect minnie and that’s why they all kept idolizing minnie who fit in with that standard more than the others.

@@babette5918 this whole mv is about the girls themselves seeing themselves as not perfect and about self-confidence. I know Korean beauty standards are harsh and about Soyeon, but rn in this mv Soyeon is not that girl anymore and is dressed super nicely like Miyeon who she stans, she is thin, she has pure pale skin, she is not ugly for sure, but her lack of confidence pushes her to the knife

Interesting story, I wonder if it's a reflection of real life. Is Soyeon regretting getting plastic surgery, or she came to a realization she's doing it for herself so she's happy she got it? Keep in mind this is not just MV but irl as well for her

I don't know for sure, but I don't think she ever had plastic surgery done. She considered getting double eyelid surgery once (the most common procedure for kpop idols), but I don't think she did it. I can never tell about that one.

GUYS PLEASE READ MY COMMENT TO THE END BECAUSE THE END IS ABOUT SOOJIN ❤ Wow you analyzed the music video so well! I’ve watched so many analysis and did my own analyzing and I still missed some of the things you mentioned! ALSO ABOUT SOOJIN, in Miyeon character teaser for the song “paradise” behind Miyeon on the wall there are posters of Cherries (soojins nickname 🍒) and on it says “the way that people treat you says a lot more about them than it does about you” and they were for sure talking about Soojin here. Not only this but on the wall was also a poster of 6 HEARTS for all the members INCLUDING Soojin. They could have chosen 5 hearts to put in the wall but they didn’t because OT6. ALSO they have ha poster with the lyrics to 7 rings (which Soojin danced to) because Soojin loves Ariana Grande. There are just so many hints because in Tomboy it was the balloons, in Nxde it was the cartoon character, and now we have this! The link to the Twitter user that noticed this is below! Knowing this gives me comfort about the situation!
