P. Djèlí Clark. In my opinion, the master of creating cool, interesting, fleshed-out worlds and magic systems in such a short amount of space. He's been at the top of my auto buy authors list for years.
It’s a low bar for Simon Jimenez interviews since it’s one of the only ones. 🤣
My auto-buy authors are Simon Jimenez, Robin Hobb, N. K. Jemisin, Sarah Tolmie, K. J. Parker, Stephen Graham Jones, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Ted Chiang, Susanna Clarke, Emily Henry, Ken Liu, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Carmen Maria Machado. 🏠
Some of my auto buys are Rebecca Roanhorse, Shelley Parker-Chan, Simon Jimenez, Becky Chambers, and Ken Liu🏡
Simon Jimenez, I started with the Spear and felt early on it was more magical realism than fantasy and I found that personally disappointing
I like the differentiation between favorite author and autobuy. I feel like T. Kingfisher, Megan Whalen Turner (if she publishes again), Bujold, and Katherine Addison are my main ones. I need to finish Dandelion Dynasty before I can say Liu (but probably) and I just need to read more Jemisin. Her stuff doesn't always fit in my head right the first time, so I have to reread it to adore it - and that takes too long sometimes.
Yes! Ken Liu and N.K. Jemisin are two of my very favorite authors and auto buys for sure! Akwaeke Emezi is the other of my top trio. Rivers Solomon and Victor LaValle are on the cusp of being auto buys as well, though
Nothing beats a new favorite author feeling. 😍😍😍
Glad to see Isabel Cañas, Fonda Lee, and Rivera Solomon on this list! I love them all so much. I definitely want to read more from Ken Liu and Karen Lord.
Your video inspired me and I made a list of my auto-buy authors:
- Brian Staveley
- M. L. Wang
- Emily Henry
- Abby Jimenez
- Christopher Ruocchio
- Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Charlotte McConaghy
- Alice Oseman
- Megan E. O'Keefe
I realized that my auto-buy authors definitely differ from my favorite authors. Like, I wouldn't consider most of these favorite authors. But I would buy whatever they publish next.
T. Kingfisher, Ken Liu, Ted Chiang, Abby Jimenez, and Fonda Lee are also definitely on my list!! And I need to read more by the others to see if they also count, but I have loved everything I have tried by them so far so I feel like our lists would end up being nearly identical lol.
Others for me are Sarah Chorn, R.J. Barker, Krystle Matar, Michael J. Sullivan, and Marie Brennan 🤩
I'm guessing before watching - Jimenez, Jemisin, Lord, Carrick, Kingfisher, Drayden, LaValle... That's all I got. Or maybe Sanderson too?
Okay - let's watch!
Ted Chiang's short stories are mind blowing! The Spear Cuts Through Water is one of my favorite reads of this year and I'm dying to read Vanished Birds but also saving it for when I need a winner bc I know it'll deliver. The author I'll auto-buy without even reading a synopsis if she ever publishes any new stuff is Susanna Clarke ❤. Joe Abercrombie is also an auto-buy for me bc his books are not always my favorites but he consistently delivers bingeable reads.
I’ve read 7 of these authors and YESS!
Because I loved the Liveship Traders trilogy so much, I gravitate towards anything pirate-y. Which led me to the Tide Child trilogy and now RJ Barker is an immediate auto-buy for me. 🏴☠️
I've got a bunch of authors on my auto-library-hold list, but very few on my auto-buy list except for series I'm already collecting - will definitely buy the last book in the Burning Kingdoms trilogy, for example. Ted Chiang is truly an auto-buy author, though - I hope he publishes another collection sometime in the next few years!
your enthusiasm for these books and authors is so contagious! 🏡✨ robert jackson bennett is not a fav author per se, but i always check out his newest works because they're always entertaining to me on some level.
Ahh so many great Authors on this list ! Fantastic !!
Loved the vid! Haven’t tried most of these authors yet but right with you on auto-buying anything Chiang publishes. And after just reading Grace of Kings and liking the series so far, I have a feeling like Liu might join the list!
I don’t have a lot of auto buy authors that I’ve loved multiple series from (very much depends on the story/characters for me) but M.L. Wang and Carissa Broadbent are currently 2 for 2! And Fonda Lee is an auto read currently so I’m hoping her next series cements that.
Two years waiting for Jemison? Imagine being a George R. R. Martin fan 🥺.
At the moment its Charles l grant, but now I'm onto his pseudonyms, so that's another 8 names to the list. 😊😊
🏠 great list!
Expected to see Louise Erdrich
I think you'd like "Tigerman", by Nick Harkaway. It's nominally science-fiction, but the sf element is just a McGuffin to frame the story. It's all about characters and (filial) relationships. Highly recommended. Not my favorite book by Harkaway (I love them all, insta-buy for sure), but still excellent and the one I feel more confident recommending you.
Great Video Angela!
Where would you recommend starting with Nicky if I'm looking for adult books? T. Kingfisher is amazing as well as the maestro Jemisin
I have the spotlight video where I describe all four of her works. They are all published under an adult imprint but her protagonists typically are coming of age, but for me that doesn’t make something YA. So safe side her works might be that weird new adult space but no strong romance focus like other new adult books

fear is the greatest aphrodisiac 😆
sanderson is no longer auto-buy for me either 😶🌫

wow, right off the bat, I didn't get Canas, or Chiang, Clark, & Cordova!😂
haha, and I meant Simon not Abby ...
🤦♀and I completely missed Liu too🤦♀
Shocking no one one of my main auto-buy authors that I have read everything they've published minus a random like Star Trek novel or something...Laurell K. Hamilton lmao. 🏘🏚🏠🏡
