    Very clear tutorial Thanks so much for putting together! 👌 - 2 small questions if you don't mind -
    1. How does one distinguish between use cases of sync and backup? Is it overkill to have a Sync job AND a backup job - especially given that I might be the only one accessing the files in my account?
    2. I see in at 12:41 in the Drive portal, there is a "Computer Backup" folder, but I couldn't see how that was created

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching!
      1. It's hard to say to be honest. A sync job is not a backup job, since issues with the file will sync to your NAS. However, if you're using snapshots on your NAS, you can "fix" any potential issues that might arise. Overall, I suggest having a backup job for your important information. I would certainly say it's NOT overkill to have a sync and a backup job, but where you conduct the backup job IS important. For example, I wouldn't worry about syncing the files from my PC to my NAS AND backing up the same files on my PC to my NAS. However, I WOULD back up the folder location where those files are stored on my NAS to the cloud. This would ensure that the files are moved to my NAS, then backed up to the cloud.
      2. Towards the end of the tutorial, I showed how you can back up a computer using Synology Drive. That's how that file was created!
      Hopefully this helps, but let me know if you have any other questions!

      Once again, great video and thanks for taking time to respond.

      Thanks so much! Technically, you can access them externally using QuickConnect, a Reverse Proxy, or exposing the ports directly. So the answer is yes, you can do it (and there are multiple ways), but it depends how you'd like to implement it.

  • @gmhermosa
    @gmhermosa 3 года назад +3

    Thanks for your efforts! The tutorial was very informative. However, I do have a few questions if you don't mind.
    1. I'm pretty confused between "sync" and "backup." So, let's say I already synced my folder (from my PC) to the NAS. If something happens to my PC, can I still access those files from the NAS using a different or new PC? And then eventually, re-sync that same folder to the that PC you'll be using?
    2. Can this be configured wherein the admin can access all users' sync folders while user's can only access their own?
    Thanks!

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  3 года назад +5

      Thanks so much!
      1. A "sync" is basically exactly how it sounds. When a file is modified on your local PC, it will "sync" that file to your NAS. Depending on how you configure it, the "sync" will send it in real-time, whereas the "backup" can be scheduled (or it can be sent in real-time as well). If something happens to your PC, the files will still exist on the NAS. Just be aware that if something happens to the individual files on that PC, they will be "synced" to the NAS first. That's why it's important to set up snapshots as well (I have a video if you're interested in learning about them).
      2. The admin user can login to DSM, go to "homes", then select the username of the user and view their documents inside of the "Drive" folder. By default, users can only access their individual files.
      Hope this helps!

      If you sync, and you accidentally delete or mangle a file on your PC, the sync process will delete or mangle that file on your NAS. Gone forever.
      If you backup your PC with the Synology Active Backup for Business ( I use this for my home files ), and if you accidentally delete or mangle a file, your NAS will, if set up to retain old versions, will have many versions of those accidentally deleted or mangled file going back days, weeks, months or even years if that's how you set it up. Thank you for the excellent tutorials! I just purchase and set up my first NAS for home use, a DS923+. It's purpose is reliable storage and backup of my extensive photo collection (amature photography). I've set up my NAS with an admin account as well as a personal account for myself and my photos as well as eventually my music collection. Of course as a beginner at this I'm sure I've made some wrong turns. At first I mapped my NAS to my old Windows PC and then my newer Mac Mini M1 which is now my main photo editing workstation. My NAS stays pinned in Win File Explorer but does not with Mac OS when booting but it is easy to reconnect. Editing files on my NAS works though I notice the speed difference. So, I've installed Synology Drive Server and tried to set it up, but I'm sure I've made mistakes in doing so. I don't understand the file structure at all. Whereas I can see my personal shared folder I created and mapped, I don't see where my synced My Drive folder is in Exporer or in Finder for files I've synced with my Mac Mini. I do see the photos I synced from my mobile phone. I need to understand what I've done wrong. I didn't see that folder check box your mentioned in the client that I should deselect. I wonder if that is the problem.

    One thing I find a little scary with setting up sync and maybe a really dumb question..... will sync first look at the PC or at the NAS for files?
    So let's say I have a folder on my PC with 30000 pictures en I set up sync....will it sync the pictures to the nas or empty the folder with the pictures in it because the folder of the nas is empty?

      First off, you should always ensure you have backups before you try anything "new". This will give you the confidence to try and set it up.
      However, it has always synced the files from the NAS, FIRST. It shouldn't delete any files on the NAS, but regardless, if you have backups, you have a recovery plan in case something goes wonky :-)

In setting on Synology Drive (especially for backup, thought the question should apply equally to syncing files between local PC and NAS), what is the limitation in the number of files that can be handled by Synology Drive? The Synology Drive Client seems to backup no more than 640,000 files, as if it is a hard limit. Is that the case? or am I doing something wrong? If it is a hard limit, what are the workarounds? In the Synology Drive Admin Console (through DSM), you will be able to launch the application, then select "settings". From there, you can "clean up" all recycle bins if you'd like! I don't know of a way to automate this.

    Found one thing it won't let you back up that's a must for me. I use an email program that has configuration files that are stored in Program files and Program files (x86). Those directories aren't in the list. Makes me wonder what Active backup for business leaves out.

      Synology Drive is more of a document backup rather than a true PC backup. Active Backup will definitely back up the Program Files folder.

      As a heads up, I think RUclips automatically deleted your other comment. If it had a link or something in it, that could be the reason why.
      Synology Drive is more of a sync than a backup. Active Backup is a "true" backup in the sense that it offers file-level and bare-metal restores (and has deduplication, but that's on the server side). That's not to say Synology Drive is bad as a backup, it just doesn't have the capabilities of ABB.

    • @jwpepper2835
      @jwpepper2835 2 года назад

      Great info WunderTech. If a user doesn't care about pure software program restores, just Documents/Photos, etc then Drive Backup sounds like a better option than ABB.
      One thing I noticed with Drive is when I set up a 'backup' in Drive and then set the same directory to 'sync' in Drive, I received a warning notice (DSM 7.1.42661) that adding Sync to an already existing Backup folder "may cause issues".
      I want to sync and share the Documents folder with my other devices and local network users (family) but I also want to back up that folder.
      Please refresh this tutorial for 7.1. There are additional items in 7.1 that don't show on your 6.8(?) version. No one has done a Drive video yet on 7.1, that I've found. You could be the first!

    Hi and thank you for great video. I also try to do the same with my DS1621+, keep all files on synology drive and keep the nas as the center for all files. However, since im using VPN, once in a while the external PC client complains about the certificate is not valid (or ”no server certificate method has been enabled”. Could you explain how to prevent this from happening? It feels like the VPN connection works great first, but after a while some VPN clients fails to connect to the nas. All the PC subfolders successfully synced with the exception of one subfolder. I repeatedly verified under Sync rules that the particular subfolder NOT syncing is checked. I have tried to delete the Sync Task and recreate a new Sync Task but to no avail. The particular subfolder is still not syncing. When I open the Win10 File Explorer, all the subfolders and files syncing properly have a green check, whereas the particular subfolder not syncing has no green check. Would appreciate any advise. If we take a step back, when you say that they're accessible by everyone, do you mean in DSM as an administrator or through SMB? The homes folder is necessary to use Drive Server, so unfortunately, it can't be disabled.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  3 года назад

      In this context, they both function just about the same. The only difference is that the backup can be scheduled at a specific time, whereas the sync is normally done on-demand. If you want a true backup application (that does bare-metal backups as well), you will have to use a different tool like Veeam or Synology's Active Backup for Business.
