And it is also a fact that a Danish Prince, Carl, was asked up to become the new Norwegian King by the name of Haakon VII when Norway had become independent from Sweden, after a much longer time as a part of Denmark! So in the latest Norwegian films about the war, the King is played by a Danish actor, as he never spoke norwegian that well! ;-)

To add to the comments at the end:
The reason this castle is important is that the current royal family in Denmark belongs to the House of Glücksburg, which is a branch of the Royal House of Oldenburg. It's essentially where the current sub-dynasty of Denmark comes from (ultimately all going back to Harald Bluetooth and his father, Gorm the Old).

Yes! Thats what I was trying to get at but then everyone’s names kept getting mixed up in my head. You honestly need a flow chart to follow it 😂

I was born in Kollund, just north of Flensburg, and lived there until I was 19, and I must shamefully admit that I also never saw the castle, and indeed, except two school excursions to Danevirke and Gottorp castle, I haven't seen much of the landscape south of the border. I hope to fix that at some point.

If you get to Schleswig check out Gottorp Castle. Frederik 1 ruled Denmark from there between 1523-1533. There are also the dome in Schleswig. It has an incredible altar piece. It has all been carved. Incredible wood work. Queen Margrethe the II, King Harald of Norway, Ex-King Constantine of Greece, Ex- Queen Anne Marie of Greece, Queen Sofia of Spain (Constantine's sister) and King Charles the III are all patrineal members of the Cadet branches of the Głücksburg Dynasty

Christian IX had six children. The one you did not mention was prince Valdemar, who became known as the uncle of the kings. His nephews were
    King of Denmark
King of the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and several other countries as well as emperor of India
    Tsar of Russia
    King of Greece
    King of Norway
Twice in his life he was offered a throne. Just say yes, and you are a king. He refused both, Bulgaria in his youth, Norway late in life.

You will need to add a Jute hook to your car for a trailer before your next visit to the Flensburg / Flensborg & Schleswig / Slesvig region - to carry all that extra beer, booze and candy back home to the civilization here on Sealand / Sjælland aka. Devil's Island to the Jutes 😂

As a Schleswig-Holsteiner I have to clarify something. Flensburg is part of Schleswig-Holstein Schleswig-Holstein is just one of 16 federal states in Germany, but as Schleswig-Holsteiners we see ourselves as Schleswig-Holsteiners and less as Germans. And yes, I think Schleswig-Holstein and especially Schleswig should be part of Denmark again. But I don't think there would be a majority in a referendum. Ultimately, Denmark and Germany accepted the borders. Many Schleswig-Holsteiners have a mentality similar to that of the Danes and I live in the southern part of Schleswig-Holstein, but here too there was a time when my duchy was well administered by the Danes. There is still a lot of evidence for this. I would personally assign Schleswig-Holstein to Denmark. But the problem is, there are too many Germans. Although the Germans here have more of a Danish mentality, the buildings are similar to those in Denmark and there are also many Danish-speaking people living here. I think Schleswig-Holsteiners and Danes should work together more and deal with their common history. Greetings from the Duchy of Lauenburg

It is somewhat contested, but there are clear signs that Denmark actually ceded the now German territories to Germany, prior to 1864, being established finally in 1864. The key reasons were cultural; Denmark wanted to politically ensure that the people of Denmark had same-interests in Denmark going onwards, and these Schleswig-Holstein areas were leaning evermore towards German culture and political interests. So the politicians of Denmark decided to cede the territories, to avoid conflict and political troubles. So, the castle which Villads tags as “stolen”, was actually acquired as a gift.
