  • The Lithuanian Zoo, also known as the Lithuanian Zoological Garden, is the oldest scientific zoo in Lithuania, located in Kaunas. It was established in 1938 by the renowned zoologist Tadas Ivanauskas. The zoo spans approximately 15.66 hectares within the Ąžuolynas oak grove park, a significant natural area in the Žaliakalnis neighborhood of Kaunas.
Initially, the zoo opened with just 40 animals, which grew to 150 within its first year. Today, the zoo houses around 2,166 animals representing 232 species. Some of the major exhibits include the aquarium, the reptile house, the monkeys' house, the tigers' corner, and the birds' house. It is recognized as a medium-sized zoo according to European standards and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) (Wikipedia) (Sygic Travel).
The zoo has a strong focus on education and conservation. It participates in various projects to protect and increase the population of endangered species, such as European pond turtles, European fire-bellied toads, Eurasian eagle-owls, hermit beetles, and lynxes. Educational programs are a core part of its mission, aiming to raise awareness about nature protection and conservation (Zoo sodas) (In Your Pocket).
The zoo has undergone various renovations over the years, with significant improvements to facilities for large predators and the addition of new paths and aviaries. Currently, the zoo is undergoing further renovation, which is expected to be completed by autumn 2023 (Wikipedia).
