Vicarious, Schism, Jambi, Right in Two, Pushit (both studio version and then their re-imagined live version from Salival) and a true musical journey Parabol/Parabola, then of course there is 10,000days/Wings for Marie, but you really need to understand the backstory of what happened to Maynard’s mother, and how it effected his life. This would mean starting with A Perfect Circle’s “Judith”, then listening to Tool’s “Jimmy”, those two set the stage for 10,000days/Wings for Marie. Great job on your breakdowns. The Tool rabbit hole is a deep one. PS, they also did a great cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter”
I think you could do full album reviews at this point since you are exposed enough to their style enough to appreciate them. I'm pretty sure they don't copyright at all either. A couple good ones are Pushit Salival (If you've heard the original version first. Sadly, no studio recording of it, as it was on their live album), and their cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter.
This is about the death of the ego. Looking inside yourself, finding nothing, and pulling yourself out of the trap of self pity and self value into a life of connection to whats around you
Because this comment hits the nail on the head, might I add to it, that it is worth looking up the Myth of Narcissus of which this song draws from. Falling in love with one's own reflection and pining away as a result. Beautiful song
I have never left a comment on ANY RUclips account so far. I give you mad props for reaching into the realm of Tool. I can not suggest just one song but can suggest to listen to the entire discography of Tool. You will discover many "secrets" that help the listeners better understand the indirect/direct references. Use caution, obsession is inevitable.
Tool recorded the fully capacity of what a CD holds for this album lataralus. There isn't a second more available. Trust me when I say this album is the bar for greatness
As far as I understand, a CD holds 80 minutes and Lateralus was 78:51, the could've fit more than a minute more. Fear Inoculum on CD, for instance, is longer at 79:10.
Tool has occasionally used an effect where they record Maynard's vocals forwards, then reverse it and add a reverb effect, and then reverse once again it to be back to normal only now it sounds like he's almost singing it backwards. Basically a reverb comes in reverse just before he makes a the original sound.
First time i saw tool live it was storming so hard. We were drenched. But as soon as the vocals started on disposition, i'll be damned if it didnt stop raining, and then started raining again about 10 seconds after the somg was over.
I think that the "backwards-effect" on his voice symbolizes the reflection. When you reflect yourself, you look back on what you have done and decide if it was right or wrong.
That is the Indian Tabla drum you heard.I believe in Reflection that is a sārangī.It's great to hear someone with music knowledge give their insight into such a complex band.If you want to hear a really far out Tool song listen to Merkaba, I don't believe anyone has reacted to it yet.
I’m really glad you did this too. Really awesome reaction & interpretation. Brought a new set of ears to songs I’ve listen to 1000 times. Sometimes you can’t see the forest through the trees. Never thought of these songs being about his relationship with his mother, which most songs.
This song is highly esoteric and symbolic. The moon is someone that is full of light, it's light is not it's own because all light comes from one source (what people call "god"), a million light reflection pass over it, 'cause it's all connected, everything is a reflection of everything, all is one. The rest of the lyrics is self explainable once you see it with "spiritual" eyes. Almost all tracks on this album have concepts from hermetism, theosophy, occultism, etc. Fantastic
Really aprecciate your insights on the musics. Very intelligent guy indeed. Try lingus by snarky puppy (video), youll really enjoy that jazzy musicianship.
As someone who knew about this song for years having a strong South Asian influence, I think it's cool to see someone with a South Asian background reacting to this, glad you liked it.
The riff you hear near the end of Reflection is the same one as Disposition, the first one. I feel the general meaning is to get over yourself, because there's a lot better things to waste energy on.
I believe that the song is about realizing the illusion of the ego. That is, there isn't actually something inside you separate from your body, and therefor separate from anything else. Your mind is an emergent property of your brain, and your brain is part of your body, and the body, like everything else, emerges from the forces of nature. Everything that exists is an expression of the same universe. It's all interconnected. There isn't a mind or an ego that is separate from it. Hence the sentence, "You will come to find, we are all one mind." Everything that has the capacity for a mind and experience is universe experiencing itself. In that sense, everything is One.
watched your schism video..... didn't piss me off which was rare for a schism first time watch. didn't need to even get a minute into this before i subbed. love that you go into these with the intention of understanding the music. people making this kind of video need to understand that it's about the music. the music video isn't actually part of the song.
First Names Last Names Lateralus was released 2 years before his mom died. I saw Maynard perform with A Perfect Circle on the first Mother’s Day afterwards. Didn’t seem to affect his performance; he put on an amazing show, as always.
The song is actually like that on the record...dead air at the end...it's like time to breath or something...Danny Carrey actually does a drum workshop explaining Rosetta stoned and demonstrating a lot of it live. He is the best living drummer IMO...possibly the best to have lived..
Really like your analytic intake on the musical aspect of these songs.. Makes one appreciate them even more, keep it up man, you've got the ear for it.. Much respect!!
It's a reverse reverb on the voice. I think this song is about someone that had a near death experience and came in contact with "The Light". After meeting the light he re-defines what his existence is. The use of the vocal effect makes it feel like someone is talking from "The Other Side". just my take.
There’s a hidden track after triad, called Faaip de Oiad, or Voice of God in Enochian (a language said to have been taught to John Dee by angels, in the sixteenth century). Radio host Art Bell, on Coast to Coast FM received a call-in from a guy saying he’d been kicked out of the military on medical grounds and that aliens were going to attack... Then the broadcast was cut short due to power going out across the state, hence the cryptic title, like God had intervened. So tool made it into a trippy song, and you missed out on it
There are a few videos talking about Danny Carey's drums. Dude uses drums from a bunch of cultures, and also electronic pads, and a giant gong on at least one song.
Great analogy with south Asian music in terms of no time signatures and no meter. Never thought about how influenced their music was until you said it! I have read Danny studied with Aloke Dutta and assume that plays a role in his masterpieces.
Reflection is about dealing with depression by dissolving our ego, getting over narcissism and material things that keep us depressed, and realizing that not everything is as it seems or what we are meant to believe, that we are all reflections of light from of the same higher source, and we should rather be crucifying our ego than down soothing our narcissism. "And in my darkest moment, feeble(fetal?) and weeping... the moon tells me a secret, (my confidant)... as full and bright as I am, this light is not my own and, a million light reflections, pass over me... it's source is bright and endless, she resuscitates the hopeless, without her we are lifeless satellites drifting".
The Lateralus album is a conceptual masterpiece of a psychedelic trip/experience. Lateralus, Disposition, Reflection, Triad are all in order on the album. Tool is big into the occult, sacred geometry, and psychedelia. I highly recommend listening to the Lateralus album in its entirety sometime! Reflection is about the reflection you have post trip. "must crucify the ego before it's far too late" "you will come to find, we are all one mind. Capable of all that's, imagined an all conceivable". It's more about realizing connection to everything around you. I actually recently listened to Lateralus, Disposition, Reflection, Triad dosed over the weekend and it's incredible. The subtle nuances stand out so much more and it just hits you right in the feels. Lateralus is forsure a go to album for me whenever I venture to the other side :D
The weather in "Disposition" is a metaphor for our ever-changing moods (dispositions). " Mention this to me, mention something, mention anything...and watch the weather change." I believe this song is a realization, through reflection, about how transitory and ephemeral our mental states are. As there are two sides to the coin, if you are going through hell, be patient. Ride out the storm and watch the weather change. Conversely, same applies to "happiness." The only way to find respite from this sort of collective bipolar disorder is to practice mindfulness. With mindfulness, you are the calm at the center; you get to have your cake and eat it too. All the joys and sorrows are still there, but you reside in this abode of peace and flow now. And ups and downs are taken impersonally, with dignity and poise.
The end the rhythm, the sound, I just visualise a dome, or a sink with a drain at the bottom. And the ball with inertia is spinning around the dome but as gravity and friction takes a grasp on the ball, it slowly gets pulled to the bottom of the dome, spinning around the drain faster and faster until it finally reaches the center... and falls in. I never thought about it as "hell" before, but it definitely could fit into my visualisation.
All the songs are in order. If you remember from lateralis, spiral out, then ticks and leeches, he feels it’s fake. Now he’s finding true spirituality. And Triad, is walking the walk.
Well, speaking of progressive and 30 minutes long, there is always Karn Evil 9, by Emerson Lake and Palmer. It's a three part suite that describes a bleak cyber industrial world where all signs of nature are gone. The barker calls to us to see the show, featuring such things an actually, real blade of grass. It closes with the war of man against machine. Or something like that. Mixed into all that was one of the first triggered sampled drum solos. I won't request it because it is so long. Keep it in mind for when your're feeling adventurous.
you said you dont know why is built up at the end, i think it is because its not the last song. there is an alternative track order that you can use by using the Fibonacci sequence or some bullshit
DC takes a lot of his rhythms from African tribal beats. Spend some time researching DC's style and watch his interviews. Dude is as bad-ass a drummer as they get, only to be overshadowed by just how humble he actually is as an artist. This Triad of songs IS the Greatest piece of work TOOL has put out yet... Thanks for the reviews KAP!
Dude, you are by far THE reaction channel not only to Tool but others. Have you checked out older Genesis from the 70s? They’re different than Tool but still progressive and very interesting to react to. Maybe the song Entangled or Suppers Ready?
Yea danny carry the drummer and the other guys as well take influence from music all around the world... That's why he implements Asian and African drums in a lot of their stuff
By the way this whole album is influenced by middle eastern music, philosophy, religious chants and singing, even the type design of the band name and album name look like Arabic calligraphy
Now you should do Jimmy , Judith(APC), then Wings for Mary/10000 days. All about Maynard mom and her faith with god , Maynard never understood her in breakable bond with god after what she went threw. Your ears are shot or your speakers are terrible I'm afraid if tanpuras and shehnais sound like sitars to you. Ok tanpuras are a stringed instrument but how you arrived on shehnai sound like sitar i don't get. It would be like comparing clarinet to the horns. Also that drums in the beginning was a tabla.
Unfortunately your first reaction is automatically wrong... Headphones are required for Tool. You now need to re listen to every Tool song you have ever listen to. Other than that, great job. 🧡
fuuuck. at least in triad there won't be as much pausing to talk about what he thinks what maynard means with his lyrics in his first listen. sometimes MJK is pretty clear about what he means. in a song like this it's honestly not even worth trying. when someone starts talking about crucifying their ego you ought to take the hind that this is some deep shit.

By far my favorite reaction channel to TOOL!! You just get it man. Mad props to you!!

"Is that a Citar?!" I want that on a tshirt
They sound and play exactly the same in concert. Very few bands (that complex) sound that good live.

The interpretation with moon/sun and even losing a girl is valid too. Why do you think the spiritual/god one is the ultimate one?
Vlad Lyubimenko well, there is no “valid” interpretation. All interpretations are valid if it makes sense to you.

10,000 days is definitely about his mom passing
