even though im no longer working in this business i still love to watch your videos. Your clever use of programming backed into AE is just awesome. Wish you all the best.
That script at the end is amazing. As someone who works on March Madness graphics every year, I have been exploring scripting and expressions the last few years to help automate our processes of making matchups because of the precise reason you said - you don’t want people manually adjusting things because then there can be unintentional errors. Dropdown lists are the way to go - but yours looks so much better and nicer 😊 i hope you will post a how to about that script, both the underlying mechanics and the overall look of it. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊I’ll definitely consider doing a how-to on both the mechanics and the design. Thanks for the suggestion! I’d love to hear more about your setup sometime and swap ideas. Maybe we could hop on a call one day and chat?
This is a really neat trick! Is it because you can easily copy-paste the markers? Could you outline (or did I miss it) why this is so much better than using the built-in essential Graphics and so forth properties?
Great question! Just to clarify, I don’t think this method is necessarily better than Essential Graphics. It’s just another option, and it really depends on the project. Here’s why I found it helpful for this particular project: First, as you pointed out, it’s awesome how you can quickly copy and paste the layer with markers across all After Effects projects. That consistency was super useful. Also, you might not know this, but College Basketball has over 300 teams, and the dropdown menu in After Effects can't handle that many options. The project also required storing text info, like team names and nicknames. With Essential Graphics, you'd need to create a separate text layer for each bit of text, which can get confusing. With markers, everything stays in one place, which keeps it simple. The main reason I went this route, though, was because of the script. I didn’t want to write a custom script for each After Effects project. Instead, all the user has to do is select the CONTROLS layer in any After Effects project and hit Apply. Hope that clears things up! Thanks again for the great question! 😊
@ukramedia oh man you have no idea how huge this is coming from you thanks Sergey. I'm always thinking I need to up my skills and glad there are people like you to learn from 👍
Just to clarify, I use Essential Graphics all the time and have no issues with it. However, it does have some limits, which is why I decided to go with scripting for this project. For example, college basketball has over 300 teams, and the dropdown menu can’t handle that many. With scripting, you can easily regenerate the dropdown with a new list of teams. That’s just one benefit, but there are others as well. Hope that makes sense.

i usually do this type of idea - layer name ending with a number connected to line number for a csv - never thought of a global layer with marker interface, really brilliant. is the image loaded with the new replace media function in essential graphics? or does it crop it from like a sprite sheet? something else?
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the idea! 😊 For this project, I already had the vector logo sheets loaded into a comp, but with only one visible at a time. When a user selects a team, the script makes that team's logo sheet visible and hides all the others. I set it up this way because there are a lot of logo sheets with Collapse Transformation checked, and having them all visible at once really slows things down. Hopefully that makes sense.

Thank you. But why don't use Essential Graphics instead? It has much more convenient tools for information structuring. What are the advantages?

Awesome setup. I wonder why you did use a script in the end and not a Mogrt Template...

😊
key to a good AE file is that it is so complicated and nested no one will ever understand
Exactly! If no one can figure out how it works, you know you've nailed it. Maximum confusion = professional!
