Grace, you are so AWESOME! Your mom left some big shoes to fill and watching you last year and this year, in my opinion, you have filled them! Dave is so awesome too but he knows that; so many people have told him and he knows how many followers he and Emily gained, but you have proven yourself. I marvel at the insights you have at your young age! Your mom must be so proud of you! You two have opened up my appreciation for these chapters (that WERE so boring cause I've read them so many times, but NOW are NOT, ) like never before! thank you so much!!!
I can tell Graces excitement and enthusiasm and I love how David maneuvering the lessons they’re great partners in making the lessons so awesome thank you both
Thank you for making scripture study so tender. I love the spirit and sweetness you bring to familiar stories! I want to know and worship the God you love ❤️
I love that Lehi didn’t chastise Sarai. He didn’t call her to repentance. He didn’t criticize her. He didn’t tell her that she was lacking faith and needed to do better. He comforted her. I recognize that her faith was lacking. But as a mother, I completely relate to her fear for her sons. She wasn’t being like Lamen & Lemuel and just selfishly complaining about what she was being asked to do. Her mother’s heart was afraid for her sons. And so Lehi didn’t chastise or reprimand her. He comforted her. And I love that so much!
I love that the book of mormon is about a family's daily struggle to trust God's promises and live the gospel and fortify themselves against Satan. It's so relatable, God is so good❤
You reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from a lesson I taught in YW. "Just because you are struggling, doesn't mean you are failing" I had this on my fridge for a LONG time, to remind my children.
I came to a realization several years ago about the reality that God's ways, more often than not, defy human logic. For example, if you pay your tithing, you will be blessed to be able to meet all your needs. How does more money going out make that possible? In order to build our faith, we need to set aside our own ideas of what is possible and move forward, sometimes not knowing beforehand the things that we should do. Faith is trust.
Fabulous lesson! Thank you! One point to emphasize - during the lesson Sister Freeman read 1 Nephi 5:5 "But behold, I have obtained a land of promise, in the which things I do rejoice;" she said that is indocative of how certain Lehi was of the visions and visitstions he had. That manner of speech is actually known, in Semetic writings as "prophetic perfect." Wikipedia says the following about that tense: "The prophetic perfect tense is a literary technique commonly used in religious texts that describes future events that are so certain to happen that they are referred to in the past tense as if they had already happened." There are many other examples of this tense including multiple instances in Isaiah 53:3 - 10, etc.
multiple instances “prophetic perfect” as if things in the past had already happened. Sunday had missed ward hour but received text “only 4 kids in nursery”. Closest come to prophetic perfect!
Only 29:55 mins in and I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Thank you both for taking the time to make these videos and for making the Scriptures & Prophets & Experiences real. This is now my go to while cleaning/shower/makeup etc!
Grace, I love your insight regarding Sariah and God giving her the opportunity to gain a testimony of God and that her husband had a vision and is called of God. I never thought that ine of the reasons it took so long to get the plates was to benefit Sariah's testimony. Thank you for sharing that point of view with me.
What an amazing lesson. You are both such a great team and I really love that you are teaching verse by verse...just what I need. Thank you so much for your time and your beautiful testimonies. I can't wait to continue !!!
thank you so much for this inspired video. I have been feeling so down lately and I at lost but this lesson reminded me to always seek God and remember all the tender mercies that He has shown me. He always delivers me (all of us) but he does this in a way that we will learn and become stronger. Thank you for reminding me to seek Him diligently! Looking forward to next week's lesson!!
Regarding Sariah, I just love this quote by Dr. Camille Fronk: "To establish Lehi and his family in the new land where they would inspire and instruct later generations to come unto Christ, God needed more than a father and a son to possess a testimony tried in the fire of affliction. God also needed a matriarch, a mother, weathered by her own trials of faith and armed with her own unwavering witness, to stand steadfast with her prophet-husband." (Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, Vol. 9, number 2)
David and Grace thanks for keeping this format. I look fw to get a chance to see and learn from you. David we need more man like you in this world. Grace what a marvelous work you are part of. Thank you. You shine in your own way, I wish I could be as lucky as your mom to have such an awesome sweet spirit daughter. :)
Good reminder. Highly favored by God despite afflictions..it's easy for me to focus on how tough things are and forget how blessed I am. Sometimes I feel like a baby eating a baby food I don't like saying that but I say it a few times and I can feel the truth in that.
I love love that it started with highly favored because.. I have used this verse over and over in the past year that I will catch myself complaining then say in my affliction I am so blessed and yet I’m highly favored of the lord in all my days ! I love this so much .
So great!!! So many wonderful thoughts from your teachings. My favorite however was on the topic of Zoram... "We are inclined to bring others with us when we are living a life of Faith, Trust, and Following God". "And you shall have a place with us". - God wants everyone to have a Zoram opportunity, and as much as he loves "the one" I'm certain it ranked right up there with obtaining the plates of brass. So cool... thanks again for sharing.
You were talking about The Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so the important stuff gets through. It's the reason you start seeing the car you want everywhere or learn a new word and start hearing it everywhere. Just your fun fact of the day.
I keep thinking about Lamen & Lemuel and the fact that they murmured, but they still went. They went with their father, and they went back to Jerusalem they went to Laban to try to get the brass plates 3 times. There was still some part of them that believed or loved or trusted God and Lehi.
An interesting note - it is called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon (also called the "frequency illusion") when everywhere you go you start to see something you've recently learned about or have been thinking about.
This is an amazing lesson and worksheet. If the Church were to ever come out with a goals planner, this lesson and the worksheet should be at the very beginning. Any kind of change in your life is scary and difficult and this lesson teaches us where to look for a better mindset. ❤
One of the definitions of “stature” is: degree of development attained, level of achievement… I think this is what Nephi was saying. “Even though I was very young, nevertheless being wise beyond my age, and having a great desire to know the mysteries of God”… I feel like that definition fits the context more than “oh and by the way I’m really buff”. I picked up a lot of new ideas from this week’s study! Thanks so much!
So much in here..trying to capture the character of God and His goodness. Sometimes it takes traveling away from home 3 days before you can build the altar of thankfulness (not the first night!) At that point those murmuring boys were probably a little tough! Reminds me to go to God before I teach and sometimes then speaking with sharpness followed by love. As long as I live I will never understand Laman and Lemuel! But this family story rings true!
I’m looking forward to studying the BofM with the two of you. I’m not great at reading it so I’m grateful to have your enthusiasm and insights to help me in my scripture reading journey. Grace…you are a breath of fresh air. Don’t ever change!
Years ago, we were taught that rich families in and around the Jerusalem area maintained caves where they kept valuables and other important items and most probably that is where the brothers hid when they fled from Laban’s henchmen.
Each year to keep my focus I study the scriptures in a slightly different way. The last four years I have been underlining every reference to God, Jesus or the Holy Ghost. Now we are back on to the Book of Mormon and as I ready I am noting any acts of service, acts of love, works or influences of Satan, acts of faith and consequences or punishments given by God. I now, its a lot. But I thought I would share something I just pieced together. In 1 Nep 3:13 it says that Laban was "angry" and thrust him (Laman) out from his (Labans) presence. My question is, why would Laban react in such an instant and dramatic way. Over Brass. In all his treasury of Gold and Silver and much more "valuable" items why would he instantly jump to attempted murder and robbery at the mere request for the brass plates? In the prologue of "The Pillar of Fire by David G. Woolley I found this gem. I'll summarize. Joseph of Egypt served as viceroy and ruled for 40 years. His two sons were Manasseh and Ephraim. He never forgot he was a son of Jacob. Before his death he bestowed a gift, one to each of his sons, as symbol of their birthrights. Manasseh was given brass plats. Ephraim was given a sword made of an incredibly rare metal called steel. It is said this sword had been given to Adam at the gates of Eden. Joseph blessed the edge of the sword with oil and inscribed a prayer on it. 1000 years later when Israel was divided into two nations, the Northern Kingdom retained these treasures and were in the possession of King Hoshea. When the kingdom fell to the Assyrians and King Hoshea and his sons fled to the Southern Kingdom where they were given a place to live and land. After King Hoshea's death his two sons struck a deal. This land for the treasures. The eldest son gave up his birthright to the younger son for some land and a promise that his posterity would never know their true birthright. 120 years later Babylon was waging a short 3 month war on Jerusalem. Laban, a military man, was the youngest of three sons. He drafted his father and brothers into the army and sent them to guard a gate he knew had already been breached by the Babylonians. Basically sending them to their deaths. With them gone, Laban had full and uncontested access to the two treasures that symbolized the royal birthright. They were a two witness testimony of Laban's royal lineage. So when Lamen asked and when Nephi asked, even offering to trade all their treasures, what they were really asking for was the one thing in Laban's treasury he was not willing to part with. And in the end, even though they were only asking for the plates, when Nephi took Laban's life and dressed in his clothes and sheathed Laban's sword, he took the second witness of royal birthright. Then was led to the treasury by Zoram for the first witness, the brass plates. So we all know God knows the end from the beginning. I always wondered as a child why did Nephi have to kill Laban. Why couldn't he just tie him up or something. Well first, it was a commandment from God. But second, when something is that important to you, your livelihood and proof of your station, if Laban woke up, he wouldn't have stopped hunting Lehi and his family until he retrieved these two items and killed any and all witnesses. Why did Nephi need them so badly. Why both and not just the plates. This rare metal called steel was copied when weapons of war were forged to fight the Lamanites. Josephe Smith used it while translating, and so much more. It was because Lehi was also a descendant of Joseph, the one prophesied of. And as such, was the rightful owner of these treasures. I know that was crazy long but it really was the Readers Digest version. I so appreciate you and all you do for the church and for those holding on for dear life thru Come Follow Me. You have made the scriptures come alive for me and I can't thank you enough. All my love, Kari Vanderpool Gilbert, AZ
Love, love your enthusiasm so much. You get me excited. Thank you again for a fantastic lesson. It was a lot of information to assimilate and to keep up. That was exciting too! Bless you both for being in tune with each other in your teaching. I LOVE it! See you next week! I’m excited!!! ❤😊
This reminded me so much of my mission! My mission president's catch phase was "why not?" (Said with sooo much enthusiasm!). Thanks for bringing back the great memories!
I have a theory about Zoram. God knew Zoram's heart and loved him. We know that Zoram ended up being a good friend to Nephi and shared in the blessings of Nephi's family. God is a God who never leaves the one behind. I think the first two attempts to get the brass plates failed because those attempts did not rescue Zoram. Further evidence to this is that Ishmael had the exact right amount of daughters to provide wives for not only Lehi's sons, but Zoram as well. Zoram was not a surprise to God.
The lesson of offering sacrifice after blessings was lost on me in 1 Nephi 2:7 until today. I saw it in 5:9 when the boys return with the plates and Lehi and Sariah are relieved. I thought I looked in other places to see where sacrifice was offered in gratitude to the Lord, but I missed that one so early in the story! It fits right in with what Grace said about a spirit of gratitude taking away anger:)
You guys are simply the best. I love your format this year. It has helped me so much to give the focus I want to give each day as I study the Book of Mormon.
38:01 -- "God was gonna PROVIDE a way" So the song about Nephi in the Children's Song book says, "I know the Lord PROVIDES a way" but 1 Nephi 3:7 doesn't say that word, it says the Lord has PREPARED a way. I just think there's a big difference between the two because something being PROVIDED makes me think of silver platters being handed your way, and something being PREPARED makes me think that you still have to do a good chunk of the work.
I think they needed the servant to go w them because he could tell everyone where they’d fled to, for one thing. I think it was tempting to go w them because: 1. His charge was murdered while he was on watch. 2. He was offered freedom from servitude. Great lesson today!
The slaying of Laban is ”just” in the time of mosaic law. There was a law that said, if you falsely accuse, and are found out, you are to receive the very punishment that you were planning to “dish out.” Laban called Laman a robber and threatened to kill him. In fact, he sent his servants to slay Laman. The mosaic law says that such punishment is to be accomplished by a witness to the event, and Nephi was that witness. The slaying of Laban was justly accomplished, and we see Nephi struggle with the decision, but the act was just in the eyes of mosaic law.
Just some thoughts that I thought were interesting when we discussed this in my Sunday School class. Some believe that Nephi and his family may have been blacksmiths. It would explain why he was so interested in Labans sword and why later he has such a fine bow and arrow with him for hunting and knew how to make a workable one when his broke. Also, yes he was guided to make tools and shown how to build the boat, but it would make sence that they had a working knowledge of how metal worked and the best ways to use it. Also, thank you for pointing out that we shouldn't judge Nephi for killing Laban. My bishop always says that one of the main rules when reading the scriptures is to not judge the people and their lives by ours today. We don't know the laws, the circumstances, the rules. So we are not in a place to understand how or why they did what they did.
Exodus 22:2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. This scripture has led me to this take on the situation. Laban called Laman a robber, right? And if he were smitten and died, no blood guilt for Laban or his servant. Laban could've killed them and claimed their goods and claimed they were robbing him, and thus avoided the blood guilt by mosaic law. And Laban did steal their goods - thus he was a thief. Nephi's killing of Laban would've fallen under this caveat, because the same night Laban stole from them, he killed Laban. It's given me an interesting perspective.
I think I may understand why the first two tries to get the plates didn’t work. The first try was due to power, influence and association. The second attempt was done through their worldly wealth. They lost all of it each time. The third attempt was made under the direct guidance of the Lord and it was completely because of Him did they accomplish what the Lord had them do.
Hey that was a great video you guys really help teach me so much. And at teh begining You really brought the spirit to me and not only brought my testimony out but helped (I dont know I gues) validate it. I have had my foot run over and it was healed and I was able to get so much better than anyone even thought possible and even more recent an accident that I had that I nearly killed me. I do flips and freeruning I do front flips off of 20 ft and thought it was so impresive I have videos posted on instagram of such high front flips. The issue though is I tried to do a front flip over a railing onto 3 ft of space and then land and imedietly front flip off of the drop. I didnt do it well though hit my back and did a second front flip and fell down (Belly floped) the drop onto concret because I didnt make it to the grass. I had so many difficult things from the accident. But what is truly amazing is Im so much more respectful, spiritual, and truly grateful for the priesthood blessings and prayers people gave with a hope I would survive. And when you talked about how we see God as an encourager! and everything else That Is True!!! And I'm telling that from how I've gone threw it. Thank you guys for evverything youve done and are doing now. It truly means so mich to so many people.
During their attempts to get the brass plates I started looking at Laman and Lemuel differently. I think you're right that they were probably thinking sheesh when we follow this God we lose over and over again. But I think God was doing that on purpose. Every time they follow God He gives takes away their reasons to stay in Jerusalem. Because the journey is going to get harder not easier and if they knew their property was waiting for them back in Jerusalem do you think they would have kept going? Even though they weren't willing God made them dependant on Him and gave them every opportunity to believe.
Or this Q that my Dad often asked - why did God command Lehi to bring Laman and Lemuel? He could've told Lehi to go without them. How different would the book of mormon have been!
It is well to consider the Lord does at times ask His people to kill adversaries... like when He sent Moses' people to go into the promised land and pillage, plunder and kill.
I think Nephi invited Zoram to go with them to protect him. If in the morning, Laban is dead and the brass plates are missing, Zoram is in big trouble. As it was, I wonder if Zoram was blamed for Laban’s death. If that was the case, going with Nephi would have kept Zoram alive.
Question? I accidentally purchased the app, I was checking it out and did a purchase and then realized I did not have to in order to see the videos on RUclips. Is there a way to get a reimbursement?
I want to disagree a bit with you about the nature of Nephi. I imagine a teenager that was gripping or murmuring that he had to leave his comfort zone. He know God answers prayers or he would not have gone and prayed. To me Nephi was supplicating to God to soften his heart and to understand and (as we all should do) wanting knowledge that what his father had said was true and of God.
29:53 you don’t see how circular or self aggrandizing that is. The author said god loves me. I learned about apophenia last November and can’t not see it everywhere.
I picture Sariah as the “call me when you get there “ kind of mom. How long did it take to get where they stopped and sent the boys back to Jerusalem? Did she give ample time for them to return before complaining? We do know that it took at least two extra days to get the plates, but no more
Nephi surely did know who God was: 1 "I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days." Maybe he just hadn't heard from God yet about this specific situation, therefore he asked of God. He may have been hard hearted about the idea of leaving, so he asked of God. Please Grace be careful of blanket statements of your thoughts as factual. You said that Nephi didn't know God so now he says "who are you and what about this situation...." We all have our own ideas and thoughts of the people in scriptures and I'm thankful for your wonderful understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and your willingness to share it, but Please watch your words, you may want to rephrase some, like; " I feel Nephi doesn't quite get God's plan at this point so he went to him to ask..."
If Nephi hadn't invited Zoram, with Zoram being the keeper of the treasury keys, wouldn't Zoram have been the first suspect in Laban's death and the theft because he had the keys? I can't help but think that because Nephi said, 'follow me!' that he didn't just save Zoram from servitude/slavery. He saved his mortal life.
I don’t have any specific references to back this up but I don’t think so. Usually when we talk about walking away we’re referring to walking away from worldly things and towards exaltation, the temple is an important part of our journey to exaltation.
Hi. thank you so much for all you do to help us come closer to Christ through studying the scriptures/ I ws very excited about the mercies chart. However, when I printed off the mercy squares the "one by one" mercy did not print. I tried twice and everything but the picture prints but the picture won't print. What am I doing wrong?
The apostles and first presidency are all prophets, seers, and revelators. But only the President of the church, who is also the most senior apostle, has all the priesthood keys (well, at least all the ones that have been given to us at this time). Therefore we call him “the” prophet.
Great lesson! I was wondering if anyone might have a source for the picture of the Savior that is mounted to the left of the display. I've looked on Deseret Book, but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated!
WOW - there are so many FABULOUS things Grace says and identifies in this lesson and SO MANY others that are beautiful amazing thoughtful and inspiring…and your only comment was that ?? Yikes-Maybe start out and give her some positivity and encouragement on how fantastic she is and how wonderful she is doing teaching along side with Dave before you land here in her special place with a comment like that for her…😘 #teamgrace YOU GO GIRL and keep up the GREAT JOB!!!
Everyone's got their own personality - makes life fun & interesting! There's lots of scripture podcasts, find one you like, with personalities that work for you. I sure enjoy this one! :) ❤@Dave & Grace, thx for a lesson my teen will listen to! And I learn soooo much! THANK YOU!
I love their lessons and personalities! Also, I feel like they relate well to a younger audience. I love to share their videos with my boys. Thank you for the lessons and insights! ♥️

Regarding Sariah, I just love this quote by Dr. Camille Fronk: "To establish Lehi and his family in the new land where they would inspire and instruct later generations to come unto Christ, God needed more than a father and a son to possess a testimony tried in the fire of affliction.
Your light shines bright! Thank you❤
You were talking about The Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so the important stuff gets through. It's the reason you start seeing the car you want everywhere or learn a new word and start hearing it everywhere. Just your fun fact of the day.
I absolutely love the two perspectives that each of you share!
So great! These chapters came alive to me as never before. And I love the segments you are doing. Thank you!
Sariah’s language of fear, I understand. Till we feel the spirit and faith again.
Years ago, we were taught that rich families in and around the Jerusalem area maintained caves where they kept valuables and other important items and most probably that is where the brothers hid when they fled from Laban’s henchmen.
I love your enthusiasm so much!
All my love,

Very insightful. Thank you!
Just wanting to clarify that this is a prologue to a fictional book…though it would be a pretty cool story if it were true
Thank you for this!
thank you. was wondering where this info came from.@@alisonstarkey185
Laban was an real example to all the brothers of the lacking spiritual condition of Jerusalem.
Thank you for everything you do. Your podcast is a bright spot in my week!
This reminded me so much of my mission! My mission president's catch phase was "why not?" (Said with sooo much enthusiasm!). Thanks for bringing back the great memories!
Thank you! This helped me personally much but even for my Sunday lesson in YW’s.
38:01 -- "God was gonna PROVIDE a way"
So the song about Nephi in the Children's Song book says, "I know the Lord PROVIDES a way" but 1 Nephi 3:7 doesn't say that word, it says the Lord has PREPARED a way.
We're using the tender mercies of poster with our Primary Sunday School class. :)
35:00 Speaking that Fire 🔥 Amen!!!
Thank you for these lessons. I miss them on Instagram, though! Bless you both.
This a day of miracle & great day warning repent stay close to th❤Lord
What is the word for this week?
Doesn’t it make you wonder why Laman and Lemuel went with their family in the wilderness.
And also, why they didn't stay in Jerusalem when they went back?
Or this Q that my Dad often asked - why did God command Lehi to bring Laman and Lemuel? He could've told Lehi to go without them. How different would the book of mormon have been!
It was a patriarchal society, so the oldest male was considered to be in charge, and going against him would be considered to be a huge taboo.
In my scriptures I’ve drawn an arrow from 7 to 16 “Wherefore, let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord”…
Wonderful lesson. Thank You!! What is the name of the Christ print hanging up behind you. So beautiful.
I have the same print hanging in my home. It’s from an Etsy shop called linenandgrace. She has many beautiful watercolor pieces.
Are the tippins avaliable on the app? Love the lessons thank you for it. Hugs from Brazil
We do know that it took at least two extra days to get the plates, but no more
Im really struggling with this worksheet. Im not aure what im supposed to put in each tag.
Nephi surely did know who God was:
1 "I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days."
Maybe he just hadn't heard from God yet about this specific situation, therefore he asked of God. He may have been hard hearted about the idea of leaving, so he asked of God.
Please Grace be careful of blanket statements of your thoughts as factual. You said that Nephi didn't know God so now he says "who are you and what about this situation...."
We all have our own ideas and thoughts of the people in scriptures and I'm thankful for your wonderful understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and your willingness to share it, but Please watch your words, you may want to rephrase some, like; " I feel Nephi doesn't quite get God's plan at this point so he went to him to ask..."
Does walking away, because better things are coming, include walking away from covenants made in the Temple?
I don’t have any specific references to back this up but I don’t think so. Usually when we talk about walking away we’re referring to walking away from worldly things and towards exaltation, the temple is an important part of our journey to exaltation.
David! Are you working out ?
Where do you sign up please
Hi. thank you so much for all you do to help us come closer to Christ through studying the scriptures/ I ws very excited about the mercies chart. However, when I printed off the mercy squares the "one by one" mercy did not print. I tried twice and everything but the picture prints but the picture won't print. What am I doing wrong?
Grace, my crazy curious mind wants to know what in the world catches your eye at minutes 36:15, and 49:53?? 🤔
There were more than one prophet at the same time? How come we do not have that today?
My guess is that word can travel faster now than it used to (social media, email, etc). But I've wondered the same thing.
The apostles and first presidency are all prophets, seers, and revelators. But only the President of the church, who is also the most senior apostle, has all the priesthood keys (well, at least all the ones that have been given to us at this time). Therefore we call him “the” prophet.
@@monaleencabaron3694 I am aware of that. But why did were they all called prophets? It only confuses the other Christians.
❤
Great lesson! I was wondering if anyone might have a source for the picture of the Savior that is mounted to the left of the display. I've looked on Deseret Book, but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated!
It’s from Etsy. I have it in my home. It’s from a seller called linenandgrace (linen and grace)
Yes, it’s my wife’s shop Linen and Grace Art ☺️
@@TomCarltonLUFC I love her shop!!
That was a house they probably built with their own hands.
How do we tell the difference in referencing "GOD" if it is Jesus or God the Father?
I live in AZ, .. no Deseret book near me and online. Tip in.... out of stock. Can u send us the tip ins until it's avail.
It might be in the news letter. Check there.
