It’s because of this, I cannot watch Eva ever again. My best friend committed suicide not too long after I saw End of Evangelion at only age 16. Right before Covid hit. He seemed so happy in the pictures he sent. I cannot imagine how he could ever have forsaken his own life. This episode right here makes me wonder if I’ve hurt him somehow. If I was somehow responsible for his death...
Sorry for respond here now but i just watch the movies, i think when he die , was only smiling for shinji , because he didnt wanted that the last memory of him for that Shinji was sad , he only wanted to be with him, and that was his last time seeing that shinji . I dont know why ,probably the atmosphere , but i think that smile give me more sense of sadness than joy
And i think for that, the director deserves all my respect, he transmitted Kaworu and give him more time only for the plot ,giving us a Kaworu like the manga ,with more personality (i love the anime one too of course , I've been seeing the anime for the past years again and again and his death just make me fall in tears everytime, but we didnt really have time to "know him" like the manga or the movies)
I like how this Kaworu feels more human than the creepy nice guy in the anime and the creepy asshole of the manga, this dude seems like a perfect mix between total bro and gay crush

(there's a cool crunchyroll video that goes more in depth about how all the different Eva verses r connected) and kaworu is tragically stuck in a loop, hence why in the 2.22 rebuild he says "the promised time has come, shinji ikari. this time, I'll be sure to bring you happiness." I like to believe he's retained his memories from the manga verse --> anime verse --> movie verse and after meeting shinji 2 previous times, he only becomes more fond and in love with him and it's evident in 3.33 🥺
