    Dude, I had Cubase open on one screen, and your video on another screen, and I just followed along. A lot of those plugins I've never used, but there are native Cubase plugins that function similarly enough. I was skeptical because I have no experience using these plugins, some I'm only vaguely sure of what they actually do, but I did it. Over 3 hours, I kept pausing your video and making adjustments to my mix, and I think you finally unlocked something for me. This is the modern pop punk sound I was going for!

    I have never stumbled across a RUclips channel and felt this "happy" for it. Your videos are killer! And, your music and personality are awesome. Keep on Rockin'.
    Can I ask you a question? Love your guitar tone. I know you use both Amplitube and Pedals. But, when using Amplitube, how do you "gain stage" your audio interface. I can't seem to get a single good tone in Amplitube. I try to set the "gain" on my interface so the input signal lands around -12 to -6db. And you don't happen to have any presets for Amplitube on that fantastic Pop/Punk to share? =)
    Sorry for asking a question or questions in the comments. Anyhow, came to say that your music and the videos are awesome!

    • @PetexZen
      @PetexZen  4 месяца назад

      Sorry I missed this comment! So glad you dig my videos! As long as my DI isn’t clipping going in I’m happy haha gain staging isn’t my strongest skill but my presets in amplitube match my preset on my interface so at some point I did dial it in. I guess my best advice is spend some time trying different levels and see what combinations you like and keep tweaking your presets until you have a solid sound that you can open up and get writing to!

    • @PetexZen
      @PetexZen  Год назад +2

      Hey nate, I hope im not hidden for long haha if you had to get ONE plugin that would change your entire world it would be PRO q 3, not only is it a great transparent eq but it has some dynamic compression features as well. AND since you can solo out frequency changes you can actually hear what youre adjusting. Before I got that plugin I felt like I was mixing a little bit blind no matter what plugins I was using. But i will say doing a lot of low and high cutting and general leveling will get you 90% of the way there in my opinion. So trust your ears and really learn to MASSAGE the mix. Thats the biggest tip I can give you with mixing with stock plugins, best of luck homie!

    As a drummer working on my own production I struggle with using a sample over my kick (or any hit). What are your thoughts of instead sending your kick/snare/toms to a second track for parallel compression? I am definitely facing my kick not punching through a mix with my current mic setup, so something is needed.

    • @rednaxresom
      @rednaxresom 8 месяцев назад +1

      Parallel compression on close mics can be super cool, but in my experience it doesn't directly compare to sample reinforcement - they are different techniques that provide different results and advantages/disadvantages. Parallel compression can boost the body/fullness of the drum sound and increase the ambience already captured in the mics, while maintaining some of the natural uncompressed transients. However, along with increased ambience comes increased bleed. This can be good or bad, depending on what your mics are capturing and what you want the end result to sound like. Sample reinforcement on the other hand, doesn't affect the original sound of your mics - it only adds to it (or subtracts - watch that phase correlation!).
      I would think of it this way - are your mics capturing sounds that you like, and you want to enhance that sound? Try parallel compression. Are your mics capturing the core sound, but you're struggling with cymbal bleed and a less-than-stellar room sound when processing your mics? Try sample reinforcement.

    Hey, I noticed you don't compress your overheads which I'm curious about; Do you find that NOT compressing the overheads allows the attack from the cymbals to come through more? That's something I struggle with in my mixes. I found that when I do compress the overheads, It ends up working too much on the snare and toms more rather than the cymbals, giving them more of an unwanted click.

    • @PetexZen
      @PetexZen  Год назад

      I usually dont compress my overheads, but I do compress my drum bus a ton and then mess with the mix knob. So they do end up getting compressed as a whole, but yeah I usually keep my cymbals pretty untouched. Sometimes you want the snare and kick and toms peaking through untouched in the overheads just too keep everything sounding a bit more natural. Now CRUSHINGGGGG the room mics can be really fun, try that out! Thanks for watching!

    In case anyone is reading the comments before the video starts, bring the volume down because his new mix has a huge increase in volume.

    nice job! two cents here: I think you could have achieved this 100% without those samples. they aren't adding any discernible value imo.

      Thanks homie! Yeah totally a preference, in my mind I think of it like there is so much shine on everything else going on in this specific track, samples are a nice static element to layer in to help the drums fit better to this mix. Atleast to me, I know you get a killer live drum sound though, so if it was your drums in here I wouldn’t dare put samples on them haha

    You: if you follow someone then you mix will be sounding dull.
    Also you: showing your way to mix.
    Conclusion: your mix sounding dull either)

      I think knowing the reasoning behind mixing choices is more important than copying someone’s settings, it’s a lot to cover. Also the full mix is in the beginning, if you need a reference. Mixing 100% from isolated tracks isn’t a good move in my opinion
