    At 5th grade Steelwind Strike is actually a very good spell for a Bladesinger. You get to hit multiple targets with a very good magical melee attack and can teleport yourself to an advantageous position at the end.

    The extra attack in Tasha's also allows blade ward to be used if you are facing a dude with a sword. Resistance to bludgeoning piercing and slashing is a good thing to have, especially if you use song of defence, you can take an 80 dmg sneak attack down to 10 dmg.

    Three other spells to consider (if available)-
    - Gift of Alacrity - You do want to get your blade song going and up right away right? +1D8 to your int will help a lot with that (8 hour non-concentration)
    - Ashadalon’s Stride - Yes it is fire but you are added extra speed to your Bladesingers speed and more damage to more targets and one “lucky” victim and enjoy the boom. No opportunity attack. No save. No stopping you!
    - Draconic Transformation - at that level you are going to enjoy that true sight because it comes up and flight same time means you deliver the magic sword were you want with bonus force attack.

    Glad to see you guys really looking at the Bladesinger for what it is and not, “you’re a wizard; why aren’t you doing the wizard things?” 😋 Even though it’s a 9th level spell, Invulnerability should be on the concentration spell list. No more damage also = no more concentration checks. Biggest thing you have to worry about now is things that can’t be counterspelled that incapacitate. Oh and it lasts 10 minutes. 👍🏻

      Treantmonk’s take on the bladesinger is far more nuanced. Whilst everyone can build their bladesinger however they want stylistically, if you are optimising, a melee focus is best only at certain levels/conditions. At other levels just enjoy the AC and concentration boost. 🤗

      So new to 5e mechanics, I played a split class fighter/magic user back when it meant tracking experience points in game, or splitting them between the two classes, very slow progression in a party of specialist. I'm creating a bladesinger, if the Warlock waste a thrall and was more akin to even wild magic it would be an option. I recall, Chainmail.

    Blur is much maligned; and is super useful when dealing with either lots of enemies (like mobs of Kobolds w/ pack tactics) or an enemy with multiple attacks (when Silvery Barbs is less useful). The primary advantage of blur is to weed out multiple critical hits against your PC and/ or deny an attacker advantage against you. As a melee caster, you are a squishy and choice target 🎯… especially for a rogue or anyone who has ranged weapons.

    Tasha's otherwordly guise is another 6th level spell that I think is worth considering for a bladesinger. The flying speed, damage immunities, condition immunities, and extra ac buff are all really good. Plus it lets you use your casting modifier for weapon attacks and damage.

    • @Maximum7077

      I think its pretty useless. The condition and dmg imminities are way to Situation al and the AC can be provided with another attack with a third level spell. Bladesong allows you to add your Int modifier (min of +1) to your AC bringing it up to AC 20 to AC 29 Spells like Haste or Armor of Faith add +2 AC each AC 24 to 33. Then Shield adds another +5 for one full turn AC 29 to 38. There's fighting styles you can pick up if so inclined and items like a Defender sword. My bladesinger got her AC up to 29 with Shield and equipment and I pointedly didn't build her to maximize her AC. I just wanted her to be statistically unlikely to have been slapped out of concentration if something was lucky enough to get close enough to hit her.

    • @ryokirah
      @ryokirah 2 года назад

      @@angelagranger760 ok, well yes, if you assume an extremely high level character with every possible piece of equipment.. ANYBODY has a good AC, lol. You either have to take magic items out of the equation when comparing to other builds, or else assume that EVERY character will have those items so the advantage zeros out. Like, you could have a ranged-warlock wear those items and be just as tanky. We're talking about builds, not items. I don't even plan builds past level 12-13 unless the DM specifically says were playing late game.
      You also can't assume you're going to have a +5 Dex unless you plan to prioritize it over Int. Assuming you have a 17/16 at level 1, it's going to take you 3.5 ASIs to get 20 dex and 20 Int which won't leave you much room for feats or multiclassing in those 1st 12 levels. Unless you want to sacrifice alot of your higher level spell casting.

  • @DrgnMastrim
    @DrgnMastrim 10 месяцев назад +1

    One thing I would like to mention is that Tenser's Transformation isn't actually all that good
    Fair warning, I typed a lot out here lol
    The main issue with Tenser's Transformation is that it renders you completely unable to cast ANY spells for the duration.
    While the 50 temp hit points is nice, you really don't actually gain that much and you sacrifice tons of stuff as well.
    Not to mention, the lack of spellcasting severely cuts your DPS output when you cast Tensers, which I'll explain below
    With Tenser's, you'll be loosing lots of your "regular" damage output when you're unable to cast cantrips like booming blade/green flame blade, and the additional damage you gain from advantage + 2d12 doesn't actually do a great job offsetting it.
    Additionally, you can't use shadow blade in combination with it, so you're stuck with whatever normal weapon you use. Since shadow blade does 2d8 as a 2nd level spell, and if you upcast it to 5th or 6th level (the same level as Tenser's, so it's fair) it will deal 4d8, the shadow blade is already fairly close in competition with Tensers. I'm not going to delve too deeply into the math, but overall the 4d8 from shadowblade + cantrips like Booming Blade/Green Flame blade (which also scale heavily with player level- for example, Booming blade deals an extra 2d8 on hit, and then 3d8 when the target moves for a total of 4d8x2 thanks to extra attack on Shadowblade, and then even if you don't include the movement bonus from booming blade you still deal another 2d8 for a total of 10d8 damage WITHOUT using Tensors) I'm fairly sure that the advantage that you get on attacks isn't much going to be enough to compensate for the amount of damage that you can just do with shadowblade + cantrip casts instead.
    In total, with upcast shadowblade + booming blade you get 10d8 damage per round, and an additional 3d8 if the target moves
    With Tensors you'll get 4d12 and 2d8 (assuming you're using a weapon that deals a d8 damage die). However, it's important to note you also get advantage on attacks with Tensors.
    So, if you want to argue that Tenser's still gives you more damage than shadowblade + cantrips, that's understandable and I won't even try to math my way through it. But even if it does deal more average damage, it's not by very much.
    Additionally, even though you get 50 temp HP, you're not really gaining nearly as much as that sounds like.
    Spells that you talked about in this video like shield and absorb elements can potentially save you ~50 hp (if not more) throughout a high level combat encounter. You're level 11 by the time you can get Tenser's, so you'll probably be fighting fairly strong monsters. When Tensor's is up, you cant cast these! Dragon hit you with an ice breath weapon for 50 damage? Dang, unfortunate that you couldn't half that with absorb elements. Lots of enemies attacking you on one turn? Dang, too bad you can't cast shield to make you harder to hit.
    Now don't get me wrong, 50 temp hp is a lot of hp. But, when you consider the fact that you could potentially prevent lots of damage with access to your spells, the additional +50 hp can end up looking more like +15 hp compared to just using defensive spells.
    On top of all this, you're also sacrificing a TON of your utility as a caster. You might be a melee wizard, but you're still a wizard, and being unable to cast spells for 10 minutes is a gigantic detriment. Instead of being able to fireball that large group of enemies 60 feet away, you've willingly locked yourself out of any and all damaging spells you might've been able to use instead. Enemy spellcaster about to cast fireball on you and your whole party? Bet you wish you still had that counterspell in your back pocket.
    Another thing to note is that the armor proficiencies are completely impractical- you'd have to put the armor on *after* casting the spell and then as soon as the spell ends (potentially by having your concentration broken mid-combat) you'll be stuck in armor that you aren't proficient with, and out of your transformation. The issue with wearing armor you don't have proficiency with is that you can't cast any spells. No shadowblade, no cantrip, no reaction spells, etc.
    Not to mention, you had to pick this as a 6th level spell instead of something else extremely powerful at this level- things like Disintegrate or Eyebite instead.
    By casting this 6th level spell, you effectively turn yourself into a fighter for a few turns. The only difference is that you've been building a wizard character this entire time, and the fighter has been building a fighter the whole time. The fighter has things like their subclass, helpful feats that they've chosen, higher strength/dexterity, magic items, etc. Meanwhile, you're likely not even dealing as much damage as they are on each turn, and you've spent a 6th level spell slot to do so.
    The advantage on concentration saving throws the spell gives you only helps you maintaining concentration on this spell itself, and it's not a particularly helpful spell for you to have casted.
    The cherry on top is the saving throw you have to make at the end, or suffer a level of exhaustion. This part of the spell is just... plain unnecessary, and is a swift kick as a parting gift from the spell.
    So, if you've read this far through (well done, I'm very proud of you, and thank you for listening to my late night rant) I hope you'll have a slightly better idea of what Tenser's really does.
    Of course, if you love the idea of a wizard turning into an absolutely ripped fighter for 10 minutes, I'll admit that it's a pretty cool and funny idea. This isn't me trying to yell at you to "never use Tensers!!!" because this is just a funny little roleplaying game about dungeons and dragons.
    However, I hope that you'll realize that Tenser's Transformation is not nearly as strong as you might have expected it to be, and it is by no means a "must pick" for bladesinger wizards.

      Spirit Shroud is terrible IMO. There's zero circumstances for any class that it's your best choice. For our bladesinger, its completely outclassed by shadow blade at every level. You get almost as much out of spirit shroud as you get from hex/hunter's mark, except you can use it for WAY longer, and you don't need to be within 10ft. That's a 3rd level spell being beat by a first level spell.

    • @thedrawmallama4895
      @thedrawmallama4895 2 года назад +1

      I get your opinion but I feel like that it is situational, but not terrible. I think Haste and SB are still the top tiers, but when you are going up against creatures that have regenerative abilities, this is where spirit shroud can truly shine because it negates all healing until the start of your next turn. I feel like it should be on a bladesinger spell list because it just the same as every other situational spell there is. There is also the choice of three different spell damage types, depending on the creature you going up against which can be beneficial too. :D

    • @saintpaulsnail
      @saintpaulsnail 2 года назад +2

      @@ryokirah I have Shadow Blade but I have never used it because I have magic weapons that are superior in pretty much every way. Spirit Shroud is pumpable (because of multiclassing I have higher level spell slots) so it can add more damage than Hex (1 or 2 d8 versus 1 d6). So it is situational. I'd have to crunch some numbers before I can decide if Haste with an added attack (for 4 attacks) adds more damage than 3 attacks that add 1d8 or 2d8 each. Haste adds benefits but also has its known downside.

  • @arcanerecovery2567
    @arcanerecovery2567 Год назад

    There are different kinds of spell gems, I think the bloodstone is the one that can store a 3rd level spell.
    Glyph of warding is a 3rd level spell that takes an hour to cast and one of it's options is to store another spell in the glyph.
    While you are spending an hour to cast it you cast another spell during that time, so it must also have a casting time of 1 hour or less. The spell doesn't take effect but is instead stored in the glyph and will be cast when a trigger is met.
    What you do is store the glyph of warding spell in the bloodstone and now you can cast it as an action.
    Use an action to cast glyph of warding, now because you used an action to cast glyph of warding the spell you store inside the glyph must also have a casting time of one action.
    Haste has a casting time of one action. Another interesting thing about a spell being triggered from the glyph is that if it is a concentration spell then you don't have to concentrate on it and it lasts for the full duration.
    This will allow you to cast another spell in a later round that does have concentration. This way you can have both Haste and Shadow Blade going at the same time.

    Kids, don't forget that Blade Ward REALLY comes into its own with the Bladesinger's Extra Attack feature. You get REAL tanky REAL fast, particularly if you upcast a False Life early on. 😀

    • @emperorshrek5827
      @emperorshrek5827 Год назад +1

      Well but blade ward just gives u resistance right? As a bladesinger u mostly are just trying to not get hit wouldn’t it make more sense to just dodge?

    • @JediNiyte
      @JediNiyte Год назад

      @@emperorshrek5827 Very true!
      But at higher levels, cutting damage in half is really nice, particularly since some high CR creatures can have attack modifiers of +18 or higher. What I like to do is mix that high AC with damage resistance on top of temporary hit points.
      Blade Ward plus Armor of Agathys or False Life upcast with something like a 6th level spell slot is roughly 30 temporary hit points, which is effectively 60 temp HP if the damage is being halved.
      Long story short, for a cantrip and a spell slot you can put that high AC on STEROIDS for some god-tier tanking.

    I Have A 7th Level BLADESINGER (2 Attack's) & Then I Cast HASTE, I Get A +2 To AC & My Speed Doubles & I Get 1 Extra Weapon Attack, Can I Instead Of Makeing A Weapon Attack, Can I Cast A Cantrip Instead ???
    So I Make A Weapon Attack & Cast A Firebolt, Then With The HASTED Attack, I Cast Another Firebolt ???
    1) Rapier Attack - 1d8+4
    2) Firebolt - 2d10
    HASTED Attack
    3) Fire bolt - 2d10
    Is This Combo Do-Able ???

      By raw no, but I think you can replace a weapon attack with cantrip as a blade singer. So it works, but only with the bladesinger.

    • @Zecteiro

      Tbh, I think Spirit Shroud is a better option than Shadow Blade, because it stacks with Booming Blade. the real competition, imo, is between upcasted SS and Haste (damage vs survivability and versatility). However, if you get some good magical weapon, like Flametongue, Haste becomes undoubtly the best option.

    i want to love the bladesinger, i really do. but every time i go to start putting things together, i can't help but cast a sidelong glance at the hexblade. sure, bladesinger isn't just a d6 hit die caster anymore. it's a d6 caster wrapped up in studded leather armor. if you want to be halfway decent in melee and not completely gimp your spellcasting, you get forced sooo hard into one very specific flavor of spellsword. not o mention having 3 primary stats to juggle, so unless you're rolling for stats and get 3 awesome rolls, you're boned. point buy you have to handicap your cha, str, and wis. don't even bother if your dm is forcing standard array. and even after all that you're still essentially a rogue without stealth or sneak attack.
    meanwhile hexblade just be like "charisma go brrrr" and everything else is a nice bonus.
    i dunno, apologies for the long winded rant. i really want to love this class. maybe if song of victory came online sooner, or if bladesinger got something similar to hex warrior I'd have an easier time of it. but at the end of the day it's still just a wizard that happens to not be completely useless in melee combat.

    it's just not worth it to invest in the melee aspect of the bladesinger past level 6 it just don't scale well enough. Just treat your melee attack as if it were your cantrip for when you are not casting those incredibly powerfull wizard spells. If you want to do melee you'd be much better of with other builds.
