- FIRST STEPS IN ABSTRACT PAINTING / How do you begin an abstract painting, especially a really large one? Some people start with an idea in mind, while others begin with nothing in mind, and some do a combination of those two. After many years of painting I have found a way to begin that works well for me, which I am going to demonstrate in the short video today.

🙌🏽🙌🏽 Speak that into existence
Lol
No offense but I don’t think you’d be here if that was the case, lol
@@Tweedlededumdum it's a joke
@@wofuldragoon5648 oh I know ;-)
i feel like abstract art is something that should be watched being created rather than just as a static piece
I agree i make detailed abstract art and by itaelf it looks fine and interesting but i record all my art and when i eatch it back sped up its amazing seeing how it was made
Fantastic observation. I would have to agree...
Very Nice 🙏🏻💛 #koushalart
Yes so true...
True, if there was a way for it then it would add to the expression a lot more ♥️
As an Abstract artist myself, watching others create their own Abstract art is so soul soothing. It's like we are getting to know the depths of each others soul without words. It's beautiful.
I’m new to this art wrld so, could u explain me what’s the meaning behind this art?
@@mohamedaslam7809 - Do you mean this specific painting, or abstract art? To me, abstract art is like a piece of music with no words, like a classical symphony. Some composers don't even name their symphonies, they just number them. Yet, often times classical music can tap into the very soul of it's listeners and an outpour of emotion can bubble up to the surface in some people, sometimes very emotional feelings. Abstract are can also do this to people who are sensitive to color shifts and movement on canvas. I've heard that some people have been known to look at a Mark Rothko painting an become overwhelmed with emotion and literally burst into tears.
@@mohamedaslam7809 basically if you suck at everything else you can just throw paint at a canvas and call it "art". if you do it often enough you become famous and delusional people will see something in it and maybe pay money for it as well so they can discuss with their delusional friends some bullshit what they think they see in the painting and then attach "emotions" in it and act like they know shit about painting and arts... it requires zero talent and it solely relies on the viewers imagination
@@Kdogpiper okay but this doesn’t even look good. I mean, there are some abstract which is colourful and has some
Pattern in it which looks good but this has nothing. Like no skill, no clear picture, no meaning. It’s like 1st med student doing an heart surgery which is an absolute mess. She has an idea but doesn’t know how to put it so she end up murdering her thoughts cuz she refuse to learn the art of conveying msg through painting(which is really really hard).
These kind of abstracts are trash imo
@@peterzana6260 I agree.
I don’t know how someone can understand what a mute person says. To me an abstract is a way to admire the colour. I personally like seeing colours. There’s a red colour Audi in the next street, Sometimes I walk real slow to admire the colour but it never spoke to me.
To some point I do think it’s delusional
Thank you so much for the inspiration. I just started painting again after a 30+ year loss of creativity. It has truly saved my life and words cannot express my appreciation for your content and generosity.
I want to be fearless and wear white while painting a giant piece like her 💖
I would like to wear white while painting in hopes of getting it dirty and letting the clothing be an art in itself
Do it and don’t be afraid!
At first I didn't understand anything, in the end it seemed like I was at the beginning 😂
Omg same!😂
Same
Same here

You have just inspired me into "attacking " an old painting that was still a WIP. I started it about 5yrs ago and I always felt it was not right so I will go at it as though it was a new canvas and cover up freely. I just recently (2days ago) "fell" on your sight and love it! Thank you so much for sharing, very generous of you.
Adele! This is soooo helpful. I’ve never tried painting before and couldn’t figure out how artists were able to get “depth” to their paintings. Now I can’t wait to try some of your techniques. I’m excited to be a beginner painter at 55.
Oh that's so exciting Lori! Never stop learning and never stop trying new things!
Adele, is there a part two of this painting? 😯
Hadn't attempted painting in years until recently ( will be eighty this spring ) and this video is helpful with beautiful healing results . It reminds me of making up music with a check list of things to explore.
I love abstract. It’s so calming and seeing it unfold through the process is joy to the soul.
I am definitely impressed. And I see how the spray bottle of water made it even better by producing a special effect it seems like. I need to try this some time. Truth be told, she probably had to do several layers of paint letting almost each one dry in between except for when adding the spray water to change up the appearance some.
Love the music, the soft colors, the paint brushes with stick handles, and the similar lines and shapes “echo” throughout. See you in your new subscription class that just started...we all love it!!! (December 17, 2019)
That price was very expressive, it touch my soul in such a profound way . It express the deeps of my emotions Andy help me to see art in a more beautiful way.
Well then maybe you could make sense of what I would call child’s scribble.
I love your videos and I'm new at experimenting with abstract art. Did you start with a dry/ damp canvas? were you watering down the black paint as you added more of it? Also, was the black paint dry before you added the white paint? Thank you so much!!
Stresses me out she's doing that much painting in a clean&crisp white blouse 😨
me reading this about to paint in white is so funny
I was very impressed by her wearing a pure white smock and then proceeding to splash black paint around. I can’t even manage to eat a sandwich in a clean sweatshirt.
im so happy I found this channel- I have drawn and painted for years, but recently I have upped the ante with some career goals (picture book illustration and portraits)- I have been working really hard to improve at these things every day, but I think I need a little break! there has always been something appealing about making abstract art... just the act of creating with not too much of a desired outcome...I think doing some of my own pieces will really help me reset as an artist :)
I wish people with your talent and creativity were available to everyone in primary and secondary public schools in America. 😊
what kind of paint is this? a specific brand? the acrylic i use doesnt blend well or you just adding water?
Acrylic paints and yes to the water. At the beginning, she is dipping her brush in water, it helps the paint slide across the canvas much better. Not sure of the brand. I use Liquitex or Golden. :)
I’m glad I discovered your channel. I’ve always wanted to try and discovered abstract painting through reading about different paint styles. I have a few questions, where do you find canvases that big? And what is the best and cheapest (Lol) acrylic to use? I love your work. Stay awesome!
Well, that is ugly, i love that :)
Three kids, last one 4 months old, homeschooling first two, and you are really recharging my creativity! I want to paint so bad! I really adore you! I do wish you showed the rest of this painying though. Or just a picture of the finished piece at the end?
Thanks for letting me know you want to see the finished piece. I will do that the next time I do a video like this. 🌸
See, I always think less is more. 2:02 is a remarkable piece!

Thanks for posting! It opens up a new path to try, or even help me break old habits. I seem to fall into line and shape making from the start and I am trying to find a new way.
Eddie, I love hearing that it opens up new paths for you. Thanks for letting me know.

What a wonderful demonstration! So helpful when trying to learn new approaches. And the music is wonderful. Can you please name the piece? I think Chopin but can,t identify the song.

Hello from france ! Thank uou for your help. But what is exactly a china pen ? Is this the same thing that a shalk ? I do not find china pen in France. Thank you so much
Hi Adele! What color did you start with? Looked like black but then a brown? Will there be a video showing the finished painting?
Maggie, I used Raw Umber for the first color. If most people want me to show it finished then I will. Thanks for watching.
i was about :34 seconds in when i realized i already liked what you had to say, thanks for the tutorial
Adele, you got the fucking formula figured out
This is great Adele -- I'm always looking for ideas on how to approach a painting. Do you have a "finished" product to show us from this one! I love it.
The music is magnificent.

@@jere3558 Excellent thank you
I admire the robust physical energy you bring into your work.
Marvelous work. I loved it. What number is the brushes you use , please. I was hoping to find them in the description. Thanks ❤
Hello! I'm experimenting abstract for the first time and I liked your process a lot. May I ask you what is that you spray on the paint? Is it water? And after you aply the first black paint, what is in the bucket? Also water? Thank you.
Yes, I used water to spray directly on the canvas to spread the paint around and that's also what's in the bucket. 🧡
@@AdeleSypesteynStudio Thank you very very much!
@@AdeleSypesteynStudio What color are you using with the black on the canvas, mine turned gray
Hello dear Adele, I Love the warm color in your picture. It would bei nice to see It finished. Sorry for the bad spelling, my english writing is not good. Greetings from Germany 🙋

Thanks for sharing your technique!
What kind of paint did you use? The black one Is is acrylic paint and than diluted?
Bea-u-ti-ful!
Thanks for sharing.
Could I ask a question?
What paint do you use? I often use acrylic paint and paper... Will that do in the same way?
She probably uses oil since it didnt dry quick and she was able to continue painting on it
Using acrylic on canvas has finer results ❤️
Hi Adele, I can see you start with fluid acrylic, but then I can't always tell what the others are. For example, was the white a soft body or hard body?
Abstract really amazed me and i am also into it ❤️
Do you have lots of natural light in your studio? I'm renting a studio for the very first time and there are no windows :(
I watched a how to remove mould from your bathroom ceiling video that looked similar to this spray stuff
What kind of paint are you using? I love abstract art and I’d love to try it some time.
I use acrylic paint. 🧡
Aku dapat merasakan kebahagiaan dan energi positif pada karya ini. Terima kasih
It's a joy to watch your creative process and the painting evolve so beautifully. Thank you!
Are you kidding? There is no creative process, just semi-random strokes. Even I as retard can do this (not art), but I cannot paint as Monet (actual artistic mastery). Those who cannot paint always do "abstract".
I was not ready for the video to end lol
Came for the art lesson, stayed for the beautiful interpretation of Chopin’s posthumous waltz.
Thanks for sharing your technique. The results are beautiful!
How long do wait in-between layers for drying time?
I’m so glad I found you! I’m learning a lot from you. Thank you! Love your art!!
can you tell me any one thing you learned from this?
Hi Adele. I just found your videos, wow ! You are a great inspiration. Can you tell me what are those Golden Paint you are using for your abstract work. Its seems very fluid ! Thank you. Irene from Montreal
Thank you for inspiring us with your videos! By the way, what is the piano composition on the background?
Hello from france! Love it 😍 thks for sharing 🦋
Hi I enjoyed your video you have made. I was wondering if you have any advice to a newcomer to painting abstract art?
Did you wait for it to dry between each step or were you just painting over paint as it was wet? Please let me know! You’re work was absolutely beautiful!😍
So unique!
I always have trouble painting abstract.. i never know if i could do it “wrong”? What makes abstract art “good” abstract art?
I don't think this is. LOL
@Hannah Yale Thank you so much! So do you think that when your painting has all those elements, it instantly is a good abstract painting?
Love your work Adele, just wondering if you have a link to your favourite colours at all? Regards Brisbane, Australia
Minus the 3 burger sandwiches and the water/paint fall on the bottom left and the rectangular white shape above along with the black dots on lower right yes there was "something"..
That's what I want to do! Just do it and fear no judgements!!
A five-year-old child can scribble Scrabble as well as any adult, if not better. Keep up the good work Adele.
I just discovered this and love Adel's techniques and colours that really talk to you. Really found her inspiring.
I'm impressed by your techniques executing your abstract subject. The result is amazing. Your abstraction reveals your emotions, intuition, personality & inner beauty..
Adele, What dark color did you start out with, burnt Umber? Thx
Wow, loving it.
Thanks !
Hello, beautiful painting. Which paints do u use and where to best buy them in London, please?
Thanks, great to watch you. I loved it at 1.26 as well. But I love Franz Kline. Tee Hee .. This has got me going. I watch James Kalm tours as well which are like a night out. Bless
THANK YOU FROM ARGENTINA.
Thanks for sharing the magic✨✨✨
So enjoyable to watching people paint
What are dipping the brush into? Is it water or some kind or solution medium? Since I just started try abstract painting due to this covid. Being bored stay at home. I love all your artworks. Its a very beautiful art piece.
I’m dipping the brush into water. 🌸
I've tried so hard to force myself to understand abstract. I just don't get it. This was beautiful, though.
You can try forming shapes in your imagination when you contemplate it. Envision a place a person or an object. Can be a fantasy place, or a real place. Just like reading a book
Same I was trying to understand it and I still don't get it.
@Scifigoth so basically let ur imagination run wild right?
Dont try to. There might not be a meaning, or a clear understanding point. Focus on how it makes you feel instead. What are you eyes pulled to? Why? Why do you feel that way?
It's not about understanding it, that's not the point, the point is to make you feel something. Anything. Then, maybe you can understand its power
Hope this helped
Art isnt something to be understand. Its on our own thought. Just Chill
Incredibly helpful and love your lyrical process. I have a blank canvas about this size haunting me and I have been afraid to attack it. You've inspired me. Love your mixture of lines and shapes reminiscent of Cy Twomblay. Ignorant idiot below just ignore him. I am signing up for your monthly subscription classes. One question - for your fluid acrylics, I see you use Golden but what exactly are they called in your other videos? Many thanks again.
After putting the paint on the canvass at the beginning, what is in the small bucket that she applies with the big brush? Water? Also what was in the spray bottle that she applied later on? What kind of paint is being used?
I have same exact question?!
Water
@@Johnbartheart Thx
I am also an abstract Artist from the Philippines,
What is sprayed to make that dripping effect? Is it just water?
I never thought abstract could look bad
Show us what you can do then friend...abstract art is all different and a matter of taste and ones own creativity....
Can you even paint....if so show us and stop downing your fellow artists...
train wreck
Hello Adele, thank you for your lovely videos. Is that the same painting that you are standing in front of at the beginning of the video? Would you please show an image of the completed painting? I would love to see it.
AMAZING
Hello Adèle, I love your videos :)
Do you use gesso on your canvas before adding the raw umber?
Thanks!
Before the black what do you put. It looks almost like there was a white or peach color first
Great one love it !
I still to this day believe that abstract artists were never that good at really painting properly and had to settle with it because they wanted to be artists
Not really. Copying or imitation is boring to many, but to express what is deep in your soul is liberating. Abstract is like that to me.
@@kikataye6293 This is how i see it as well.
@@Sulam2490 ❤️
That is a sad misconception that may not be entirely serving you. There are certainly some people who lack discipline or work ethic. Many very talented realism painters eventually find the complex emotional language of abstract art more satisfying in the end of their careers. It's probably not a great idea to "assign" internal motives of laziness to any artist. I'm sad that you are blind to the beauty and depth of the abstract world. It is such a rich and joyous place.
Thanks, Adele. Can you share what your background palette is? I love the smoky effect.
What medium do you use here? Would love a supply list!
I use a gloss medium and just some water. That’s it. 🌷
Been watching videos to get ideas about a canvas I’ve had for years. I came across yours and I feel disappointed over the end of this one! You left me hanging!
Very classical different. 💖
Hi!!! I would love to see the final piece. Beautiful work!!!
I've just stumbled upon your channel and I love it and watching you paint. I'd love to know if/when you let paint dry before adding more. It looks like you let the dark first layer dry somewhat before bringing in the white. I'm learning so I'm trying to pay attention to these little details. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
Hi there! I usually let the layer I'm done with dry completely before I move into the next one.
@@AdeleSypesteynStudio thank you! That's so helpful.
