    I've been re-filtering my oil ever since I got my unit... at least 5 years. I have the old school filter - probably what HR based their design on for their "filter. I took a used Brita water filter from a Goodwill thrift store. Next, I purchased a roll of Scott's toilet paper - single ply. Then I pulled the cardboard roll out, leaving the roll of toilet paper. I removed the plastic Brita filter, took the Scott roll, and replaced it. You will have to take a razor and cut a good bit of the "outer layer" of the roll to leave you enough of what is left, you want to compress the roll into a solid roll that you can press into the hole where the Brita plastic filter lived. you want it as tight as you can manage. Now, the next time you finish up a cycle, you drain the pump directly into the top of the Brita filter. It will take until your next cycle for it to filter through into the bottom of the Brita filter. In fact, the first time you drain oil into it, it will most likely soak up all the oil coming out of your pump and there won't be much oil in the bottom of the Brita filter at all, no worries, just add the next cycle and drain into it. Oil will eventually begin to filter through.
    It will hold around 3 - 4 cycles worth of oil - approx 1/2 gallon. I will then take the filtered oil and pour it into a clean quart mason jar. Put it in the freezer door where it will separate any water in the oil and sink to the bottom and freeze solid. when I have emptied the plastic gallon jug that I am using to refill my vac pump, I then take it to my kitchen, open it up, take the "frozen" quart jar of filtered oil and carefully pour it back into the gallon jug. The oil will not freeze solid, and the viscosity will become like maple syrup. I have two, 1-gallon jugs in rotation. One that I am refilling from and one that I "refilled" from the freezer. then I rotate, I never use the freezer oil directly into the pump... it will gradually warm up to room temp and I'll repeat the entire process in 3-4 cycles.
    The oil coming out of the freezer is clean, clear, and water-free. it has lasted for several years and I didn't replace the Scott tissue until I accidentally dropped my Brita filter and broke a big chunk out of it. I acquired another Brita and set it back up from scratch. That was maybe 2+ years ago. I keep my unit running 24/7 with very little downtime between cycles. I have not purchased new oil since I originally purchased the machine. I bought the FD used off of Craigslist and it came with 2 gallons back then. I purchased a new gallon from TSC back then and have never had to purchase oil since. Unless you do a weird cycle that the food violates the oil then I don't see that filtering won't work. This is a huge savings over the course of the life of the unit.
    There are YT videos on how to set up a Brita filter and many posts on Betty's Harvest Right FD FB group as well. My good friend who has been doing it long before me showed me how he rotated from Brita to freezer to gallon jug process worked. Hope this was helpful. I imagine at some point I may have to recycle some of the oil but not had to so far
    I just did a search on my email and I see where I had contacted HR about information on my used machine - that was Oct 2017, so it has been at least that long - 2 Brita filters + Scott's so an average of 3 years - maybe longer if I hadn't broken the first one.
    Edit: The first Brita I had was a small slender model, the one I replaced it with was prob double the capacity.🤠

    How do I safely dispose of the oil soaked paper towel when finished draining the filter?

    • @Philat4800feet
      @Philat4800feet  10 месяцев назад +1

      It's same as as dumping oil absorbent in the trash. As long as the oil is "locked" or contained in a medium and isn't FREE flowing is the key word. It's also known as the paint filter test. It doesn't matter if it's a paper towel, saw dust, kitty litter, clay, etc.

      If you want to go the extra mile use a ziploc bag...and hug away.

    I just finished changing the oil in my freezedryer. It was quite nasty so I flushed the pump with new oil, ran it in maintenance mode for a few minutes, then drained it out again and Refilled it with new oil. Filtering the old oil in the hopes it gets clean enough to reuse. If not, I'll recycle it. Just ordered more oil & filters.

    For recycling you could add all your used cooking oil also.

      Not under these conditions. The EPA program is for petroleum base oils. I know that restaurants have companies that pick up cooking oils, and some will convert cooking oil to biofuels, but this is different.

    I use Black Gold oil and have use Harvest Right oil that came with the FD. Can you mix those 2 oils and use again in the FD. Thanks for the info on the disposing the oil filters. I was wondering if you could film a video on the 5 shelf unit vs. the 4 tray for the med and sm. FDs. Thanks

      As far as mixing oils, my recommendations would be to avoid it. Each oil has its own unique additives. I don't have a five shelf unit, and I can't imagine much of a difference other then longer drying times and a greater ice ring.

    Question: The oil that still looked clear, that you poured into jars, do you reuse it in your freeze dryer?

    • @Philat4800feet
      @Philat4800feet  10 месяцев назад +2

      yup. I will use until cloudy or until it goes yellow

    How many times can you reuse the oil after filtering and how many times can you filter before needing to replace the filter?

      Until it goes dark yellow or cloudy

    Ok, so you drain your filter onto some paper towels for 12 hours just so you can legally dispose of the filter into the landfill. Then you dispose the oil soaked paper towels into the same landfill. Makes perfect sense 😲

      Do you need a hug too?"
