Justin Townes Earle: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • We threw a curve ball at Justin Townes Earle. Despite his five albums full of well-loved songs, we asked him to play new material for this Tiny Desk Concert; songs we hadn't yet heard. Earle's new album Single Mothers comes out this week, and here he performs two tracks from that record: "White Gardenias," his nod to Billie Holiday, and "Burning Pictures."Based in Nashville, Earle is a strong lyricist with a father, Steve Earle, who similarly finds strength in perfectly crafted words. The younger Earle is on tour now, playing old and new songs, so here's a taste of his sharp songwriting to tide you over until he comes to your town. --BOB BOILEN
    Set List:
    "Burning Pictures"
"When The One You Love Loses Faith In You"
    "White Gardenias"
    Credits:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Denise DeBelius; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Colin Marshall, Maggie Starbard; photo by Colin Marshall/NPR

Justin is the spark that resurrected Americana music . To me he gave me hope. Growing up a punk rock kid and finding your own voice with this style of music. And the struggle with addiction. He has given me a voice and a passion along with many others ...even after his death . And those of us that knew about him all these years it's like we were part of a small club that was aware he existed and no one else did. He was the coolest person ever. Thank you Justin .

Just learned of him today - phenomenal talent, shame I hadn’t heard of him while he was around. RIP JTE

Watched the stream of Steve's tribute concert that was up in Nashville on the 4th. I wish I'd been there, so many good people playing Justin's songs. So this afternoon has been a dive into his performances. Like Townes and John Hartford I don't think I appreciated the complex poetry of Justin's songs until he was gone.

I notice most of the comments here area a little older. Too bad. For me, RUclips is all about finding new music you're probably not familiar with. I only hope most listened long enough here to hear White Gardenias. So very cool.

I had tickets to see him for what would have been my first time seeing him live. This was right before the pandemic and his passing. My fav songwriter of all time, so so sad. May he rest in peace

He actually seems nervous here which I never noticed before, always admired his courageousness though, takes balls to play on your own

He's definitely flustered here..I guess like he said he was flying back out that night so it was probably an early flight there that morning, straight off the plane..guitar in hand..go play. And it's not like he did anything wrong here he started getting into it more as he went on but when he was fully on?, that man with his string-box was a force of nature often imitated, and imo never bettered. He made those six strings ring six ways from Sunday. Pure passion. R.I.P JTE.

Yuma is one of my favorites but it was also at the very beginning. Following his namesake all his albums are over produced.

When I got the vinyl copy of "Single Mothers" there was a little promo flyer inside that said to look for "Absent Fathers" to be released in January 2015. I was totally surprised by how quickly it'd be released, but that would be great!
