  • It's good to get out your comfort zone and riding the Trans Pennine Trail for me was exactly that. With little to no off-road riding experience I switched over tyres on my Sonder gravel/road bike and set out to complete the trail over a 4-day weekend.

From gnarly tracks across the top of the Pennines, fields in the middle of South Yorkshire to gravel tracks, logging roads near Sheffield (I got lost in Wharfcliffe Woods!) and Sustran National Cycle Network (NCN) Routes the trail offers lots of variation of riding styles.
I enjoyed it that much I would definitely consider riding this again - maybe in it's entirety from Hornsea to Southport next time!
In this episode watch me riding from Crowle to Boothferry Bridge for a non-start of the trail eventually finding the trail at/close to Burn Gliding School and heading West to Southport on the Irish Sea coastline.
What is the Trans Pennine Trail?
The Trans Pennine Trail is a fantastic long-distance route linking the North and Irish seas, passing through the Pennines, alongside rivers and canals and through some of the most historic towns and cities in the North of England. The route can be completed in one go or broken down into shorter sections.

How lucky were you to get that fantastic weather! Love the look of that route. Might try and do it before deep winter kicks in. What campsite app did you say you use, does it select less touristy spots?

Hey Mark, yeah I was super lucky! I use Pitchup.com, ukcampsite.co.uk or google maps to find places. Nothing magic. Yeah it was a brilliant route throughout, surprising network of off-road paths and trails across the country.

Been thinking of doing that trip myself. Would you say your Sonder was ok for the job, or would a MTB be better?

It was fine for me, definitely rough and of course some suspension would helped across the highest section of the ride. Mtb in the wet/Winter for sure, because it was so dry and dusty I got away with it. Fun part was making sure luggage was super secure, handlebar bag kept hitting front tyre. So lessons learnt. No saddle sores despite lack of application.

What tyres did you have on looked abit rough

Hi Robert, they were Schwalbe Marathon Plus Smartguard Rigid Road Tyre, 35c. Yeah definitely need grippy more nobbly tyres. A few spinouts on the more gnarly uphill sections but generally they performed well - and zero punctures. I had 60psi in front and rear - felt okay, maybe I had it a tad bit too high, just guess work on my part!

I would like a breakdown of the gear you used for this trip including the bike

How about I do a video ahead of my next trip? My gear is often the same no matter the destination.
