  • Cape Town, South Africa - 18 July 2024: The Opening of Parliament to mark the advent of the 7th administration was held at the Cape Town City Hall. The address by President Cyril Ramaphosa signals the start of a second 5 year term for Ramaphosa. As a result of the loss of its parliamentary majority, the ANC was forced into a government of national unity with the Democratic Alliance as its main partner.
Opposition parties such as Jacob Zuma’s MK Party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and even the much smaller National Coloured Congress (NCC) have come out against the government of national unity and have joined forces under the auspices of the Progressive Black Caucus. EFF Leader Julius Malema is also pushing for President Ramaphosa to be held accountable for the Phala Phala money laundering accusations. However the Democratic Alliance has stated they will not support a vote of no confidence in Ramaphosa despite involving the FBI and calling for Ramaphosa to be impeached when the scandal first broke.
