"This was an amazing start to a private winter Wildlife Tour on Yellowstone’s Northern Range with a guiding company, Yellowstone Insight. Eleven of the Junction Pack tried to get a meal of elk for breakfast. But alas, the bull elk persevered as the snow was just too deep for the wolves. It was an amazing bit of Nature and Wildness that unfolded right in front of us. Wolves risk their lives to provide food for their family, with their face! And this is a typical scenario, where the pack expends a lot of energy, yet turns up empty. Elk 1, Wolves 0. Three out of four chase sequences are unsuccessful for wolves with elk. This chase sequence ended just like that, unsuccessful. The elk made it out of harm's way on this day."

at first, I was only impressed by the wolves teamwork, planning, cooperation and thought the elk must just be stupid but then later realized that the elk just know wolves have stumpy legs in the snow and they only have to cruise on trot when they get cornered lol

0:57 I'm sorry, I know this is a potential life-death situation for the elk and feast-starvation situation for the wolves, but I thought it was jut too cute watching all those wolves bouncing through the snow looking like puppies.
Rare to see a pack of wolves that out numbers their prey , in almost all of nature even in Africa and elsewhere, there’s one to a few wolves or lions are hyenas and then a whole bunch of antelope or deer, basically what I’m trying to say is I never see so many predators in a pack
There were only 11 wolves. The druid pack had like 30 wolves. They decimated everything in their prime
Ask the Elk what they think of wolves being re-introduced to Yellowstone Park. "Nice, now we get to watch our baby elk get eaten alive"

Мнение охотоведа - “Почему олени не убегали в самом начале, а ждали пока волки подойдут ближе?”:
Возможные причины:
1) олени в чем-то были неуверенны (вероятно, местность неудобная - волки ж специально "загоняют" добычу туда, где удобнее напасть);
2) уже бежали и устали;
3) не понимали - куда и как спасаться. Я видел такие случаи (медведь нападал, например, на изюбря, рысь - на косуль);
4) волков много и олени "думали", что делать;
5) олени молодые, вероятно, волков впервые видели... Опыта нет. - вместо того, чтоб чётко биться и уходить на камень.
Там, ниже, стоял под соснами плоский камень - все бы пятеро на него встали и бодали бы волков!
Волки в такой ситуации хорошо лезут - вроде невысоко и рядом. Среди волков тоже много молодых 2-3 года, а вместе с тем, невысоко, да и сверху изюбри быстро б их "прижучили".
Хотя бы 2-4 пришибли бы, а часть ослабили. Их же 11 волков, не мало, конечно, но и не так уж много. Глядишь - лидера ранили бы - те, нередко первые лезут. Это вообще козырь!
Короче, деталей масса.

Hardly. Wolves encounter these depths all the time and they're stamina, is unrelenting. The Elk, even with their long legs, have to break the path and eventually, it wears them down to mere exhaustion.

Wolves have been known to Harry even bull bison for 36 hours in deep snow until it just submits to exhaustion. The wolves didn't even stop running in the vid.
I've seen them close much bigger gaps and press on. Believe me when I say THE HUNT JUST BEGUN.
Wolves earned their stripes by being the most persistent hunter around. Especially in the winter, most of their smaller prey have migrated or are in hibernation so these animals are their only source of food, meaning they'll definitely not give up.

Почему олени ждали? А потому что волки так не охотятся, а перемещаются из пункта А в пункт В. Спереди идут самые слабые, в середине самки, а замыкает цепочку вожак. Поэтому в середине и ждали когда передние пройдут. А олени видимо понимали, что даже в случае атаки у них есть фора.
Первым всегда вожак стаи идет, потом молодые самцы , самки в середине , а в конце всегда самые слабые и больные плетутся !!!
