Hey if you watched this video and want to see more of my creative endeavors check out my latest short film that I am currently submitting to film festivals:

You said it at the very beginning. King’s X music is a total vibe!! They never did really hit it big but they have a great cult following. Criminally underrated.
Video shot at Fitzgeralds in Houston Heights. I met Dug there when I was guitar and bass tech'ing for The Missiles. He's a super nice guy.
Thank you so much for doing a video on this band! This may legitimately be the closest you ever get to a genuine first reaction to the Beatles. A truly legitimate Trio of geniuses that fell by the wayside far too soon
dUg is so damn beautiful, and I am straight! lol.. he still looks absolutely amazing now in his 70s... look him up now, it is insane, you have to see him now, you will just love him ! the most huggable man ever so great to meet. and in concert he just preaches... in a good way, like in the middle of songs he tells stories and that voice ! they are playing Gramercy theater in NYC in August... last time Paul Schaffer came on stage! people love this band and dUg for a reason !
The entire "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" release is good. So is the previous release "Out Of The Silent Planet".
King's X is like the perfect marriage of grunge, Beatles and Rush, with a sprinkle of Diamond Darrell. If you choose to open the can of worms that is King's X, I'd recommend "Pillow" or a live version of "Goldilox". Those are always fun, because the band just have to play the key notes, while the audience sing the whole song. Awesome band. ;)
Aloha Charis, Mahalo, Merci, Muchas Gracias for reminding me that I was a fan way back in the day! Dusting off the ol' CD and revisit this band!!
They were great in concert. I saw them open for Van Halen. The singer is a very tall man, so when he tried to stagedive the crowd didn't catch him. After a couple minutes, he got back up to his feet & finished the set. They sounded great & put on a great show. Mad respect to this three man band.
Couldn’t smash the like button fast enough. They’re one of the most criminally underrated bands in rock. Their early stuff still holds up today. Hope you continue to explore King’s X - not very many reaction channels have found them yet.
SO GOOD!
Most people do end-up thinking that this is, somehow, 'in praise of his grandma,' but:
Pinnick grew-up in a household where his grandma (as was a standardized church thing in many, many quarters!) called it & thought of it as "devil's music" ...in any form.
...but Dug felt saved by it and wouldn't deny the feelings and power and hope that it gave him
(he has spoken of this numerous times, now ...in various places - including on stage)...
His grandma would not "sing," in fact: she would stomp her feet and curse, etc.
...but Dug knew there was something greater & better for him ..
and music, itself, held the key.
So ...in some ways, "Over My Head" has to be a celebration
...but it also exists "in the face of": oppression, denial, misunderstanding.
As a gay, black man, Dug. certainly, did NOT have "the easiest time" growing-up in Texas
...but: he found his path, he followed his own vision & truth and he found his way to a better place.
That's a lot. 🤘🤘
[He was, also, close with: The Abbott brothers and all of Pantera (even before they changed their sound ...but certainly after!)
and the 2 bands supported each other, often, touring in the early days of each's career.]
Been on my playlist for nearly 40 years now - not only this track but the whole of the album Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. They were out of their time - still are. Unique. Awesome live, since I first saw them supporting Deep Purple back in the 80's.
I love that you have been introduced to King's X (a band I have loved since the 90s) and I absolutely love dUg's voice (the way he spells his name now). You should continue down the path of their music, you won't be disappointed.
dogman; King (is coming); Pray; Summerland; essentially anything by them, I love
Love the video and the channel ❤❤
I liked their song Junior's Gone Wild from Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. This one's good too.
Hello all
You're so right about the era of the 80,s 90,s and being openly queer. Born in the 60's, child of the 70's and 80's i couldn't have come out as trans and queer. My family was (and is) so conservative, and religious that while i would have hoped they'd be accepting i had no expectation that they would be. I have so many friends from that time who lost part, or all of their family when they came out.
They open hatred we face today was the same back then, largely because of the AIDS epidemic. Oddly through the 2000's and into the 10's things seemed to be improving, only to go nuclear around 2014; right before i came out.
Thank you for being you, for being a shining light. 🏳️🌈❤️🏳️⚧️
We are in this together❤️
🤘🤘
Howard Jones is awesome in his own right, but don't get it twisted. Doug is 73 and *still* running. Dude is a marvel.
I gotta see something current!
OK for suggestions of songs: Summerland, Fool You, Picture (you will LOVE this one)... and there is too many to name ! sheesh
I loved your reaction to this band, video, and their background. I also greatly appreciate your take on the "certain people's weird morality" causing them to reject people who don't fit into their narrow world view. Amy Grant suffered the same fate when after years of only releasing "praise" music, she broadened her horizons and released an album with secular songs. Rather than the contemporary Christian music scene seeing this as a way to tap into new potential markets, they savaged her in the press as a "heathen" who had "fallen from the righteous path."
I got to see Kings X with Fishbone in the early 2000's with my brother and his wife. Unfortunately for me, I rode with them, and they were only there to see Fishbone so they weren't willing to stay for Kings X's full set. I got to see maybe 6 or 7 songs.
F'n OLD School. "It's Love" is another great tune by them :) Their harmonies are really great. Doug Pinnick kinda sounds like Richie Kotzen of Winery Dogs... but that vid didn't perform well, so I'll say no more. ;-) Love the eye shadow, btw. I appreciate you doing these special Pride month reactions.
Thank you. I have been getting a surprising amount of hate comments. Which shouldn’t be surprising but maybe I’m reacting to too much Ronnie. Lol
I subscribed hoping to hear more kings x
I know you reacted to Judas Priest a couple of weeks ago but If you can fit it in before the end of the month.
You should react to Judas Priest - Victim of Changes (Live At The Seminole Hard Rock Arena) make sure you use this title.
This sound and video quality of this live performance is flawless and will cause your face to melt and ears will bleed. Everything you want from a live performance.
It's Love
The Difference (In the Garden of St.-Anne's-On-the-Hill) - fantastic harmonies on that song
Black Flag
Lost In Germany
Dream In My Life
Mississippi Moon
Despite the label as a "Christian rock" band, Dug vehemently says that this was a misconception of the band. There was a Bible quote cited on one of the early albums (Faith Hope Love, I think), and the band's early lyrics were very positive, but there weren't overtly religious messages in their songs. They'd never be confused with Stryper, that's for sure. It's pretty obvious that Dug had some gospel choir experience in his musical history, and tapped into that frequently. They were building up their fanbase, and were well-regarded by the rock press, but unfortunately were coming into their prime in the early 90s, and got swept away with a lot of their contemporaries when the Seattle wave crashed on the shores.
how dare you don't react to Ratatata?? :P fun beside... it's awesome
Hopefully doing a reaction to it in July!
BABYMETAL Electric Callboy - RATATATA , next
