This song takes me back to a time when I tried to convince myself ( and her) that I no longer loved my ex wife...didnt work then, doesn't work now 30yrs later!!
Yes: It’s genius, actually. We’re hearing emotional layers of communication simultaneously; and we relate because we have been there. He really catches the nuances of emotions within all of the uncertainty that his feelings will ever be reciprocated. It is a very underrated gem.
Boy...this song is SATURATED with memories and nostalgia! This is one of those songs you listen to in the dark, headphones on, and allow to play like TEN times and you just don't get sick of! Either that or cruising around in your car, on a breezy Spring night...windows down...
+Charles Pruett For you and me both. But for me you listen to it in the dark, you listen to it in the light. you just listen to it. I live in the foothills of the of the California Rockies. I go up to a hill over looking my city and watch the sunset and for a little while, I am a little kid with a nappy fro, inquisitive mind, and endless imagination.
The Singers name is Eric Stewart, he wrote this song for his wife, she was upset because he stopped telling her he loved her, so instead of writing your every day love song, he wrote one with lyrics that mean the exact opposite of his feelings towards her, Eric says he now tells his wife every day that he loves her.
Randy Holtz Well you half right, he didn’t actually stop telling her he loved her, he felt that if he said it all the time everyday that it would become meaningless so, he wrote this song for her to say that he really did love her.
This song has such an ethereal quality to it. Using vocal backing tracks instead of instruments was a great call by the band not to mention the arrangement. The way they're able to convey exactly the opposite meaning with the lyrics is superb! 10 out of 10!
I was born in '80, but I always had a strange nostalgia for the 70's as well- something about imagining my relatives having their "heyday" in that period, or maybe because pop culture started embracing 70's nostalgia when I was a teenager. Regardless, this song definitely transports you to another time no matter when you grew up!

Listen again, and maybe look into the back story. It's a love song through and through. Sure, non-traditional, but all the more sincere because of the superficial denial of the obvious underlying emotion.
TJ myname I believe you didn't get the true meaning behind the words. Listen to it with your heart, bear in mind the complexity of human feelings and our ability to lie to ourselves. If not now I believe one day you will get the lyrics. It is a wonderful song, one of my favorites as well :)
@@neilharrigan1324 Dig a little deeper. It's not ambivalence. Sure, the words sound like denial, but the full effect of the lyric is of a world-class love song! If some one you love wrote this song about the two of you, well then you most definitely DO have it made!
Qué coincidencia yo siento algo muy raro en el transfondo de esta melodia...muy pegajosa...un poco mística pero me gusta muchísimo desde la primer vez que la escuché el año pasado.
this is such a beautiful song. the way I'm interpreting it is, the person singing really is in love. He keeps saying it doesn't mean much and that he's not in love and that he only uses the picture to cover up a stain so don't ask for it back only to cover up the fact he's in love, just scared of getting hurt and too proud to admit it and let his walls down. I am just like that.. I never truly let a person know just how much I love them only because I don't want them to know they hold that much power... that they could break my heart. so I usually use phrases similar to the lyrics... what a beautiful song I just can't get over it. there's someone I wish I could show this to...
Remember what Janis Joplin said: Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose". You have to say it to feel it or you 'll never have true Freedom Janis had it!!!
Remember.....Happiness is the only feeling that grows when its shared with someone. Go have some company, you owe it to yourself! Dont be afraid...You cant grow if fear stops you. Comfort is far worse than never knowing what you could have had....
I find myself doing the same, hopefully since the 2 years since you posted you've gotten the chance to show that someone what you wanted, in time i hope i do as well
@@Stephanie-di7qy I’m going to throw a curve and say it’s a man singing about what a woman in a relationship was saying to him. If you read the lyrics and put it in a woman’s voice you can see it. But the choice everyone says is he’s madly in love and is trying to tell her he’s not.
"Couples Only" rollerskating in the very early 80's. My older brother Joe would pick me us and skate with me in his arms to this song if he couldn't find a girl to swoop on that night. AHHHH, such a great memory!!!!
Same for me! At the time, I didn't know the backstory from the songwriter, but I could see both sides: the apparent denial, but the underlying true emotion. And the target of my feelings back then, is my now wife of almost 40 years...so it did work out.
Wow! Beautifully written!!! I never knew, It said. “Be quiet, big boys don’t cry.” So bittersweet. May little boys cry all they need to; for the many times they will need to hide or hold back their tears, when they grow up.😪
I saw a documentary yesterday how they created this song, fantastic! The girl who whisper "Be quiet, big boys don't cry..." was the receptionist in their studio!
I was in the 4th grade, and one of the girls on my block said to other girls she liked me. No way did I know what feelings stirred in me. But this song would play on the am transistor radio I had. No knowing what love, and the feeling of being loved (by someone my own age), meant, I assigned it to this song. I would wait hours just to hear this song play again, and the feelings transport my emotions into an undefined place, even in 2021. Like, the girl on my block was saying to me, through this song, it's OK to be overwhelmed, and not to cry, and be brave. Also, I imagined an older girl, who understood my feelings, tell me that big boys don't cry, like in the song. This song is such magic !
this HAS to be my all time favorite song, I'm old enough to remember when it came out in 75 and it still gives me chills and great memories to this day!
I can't believe some people are too stupid to understand the meaning of the damn song. The guy is obviously super madly in love with the chick but didn't want to admit it or didn't want to make the girl know that he's more in love with her than she is with him. He's basically lying to himself.
Yes, but they had a nasty breakup (which is why he still has her picture on his wall) and he is still feeling the pain. This is basically that first phone call (a month or two after the breakup) that he thought would be an easy "how are you doing" call but his emotions are overwhelming him. The repetition of "I'm not in love" is the same as him telling himself to "stay strong, don't let her know you're hurting".
You don't really get it until you see the lyrics written though...I've been listening to this song since it came out and I just now get the full meaning of it! Of course I'm a grown man now as opposed to then who has been through a few things too...(- :
I thought it was threw the course of his relationship, the begging, he is happy but he's almost embarrassed that he's already head over heels and tries to play cool, and than she's starting to break up with him, probably because she feels he's not emotional attached and he tries to call her and tell her but he can't help to feel weak so to cover up his weakness he lies and says she never meant that much to him. Than at the end it's him realizing that he should have just loved her but now he's too embarrassed because he already lost her so he says he never loved her still, and this song, I feel, is like a final confession to her. So sad, and so sweet :')
This is one of the most powerful love songs ever written. It touches just about everyone with some kind of relation, experience and strings most of us to it. The more you listen the more your eyes get wet by relating emotional connections to it, which you may feel infinite.....
Thank you for this upload of a great song. It was released in May 1975 and by November 1975 I was head over heels in love, and I was listening to Art Garfunkel's 'I only have eyes for you'! 1975 was a great year for music and for love!🤩🤩🤩

Wow....no wonder why this song is so amazing. Found this little doc looking for the lyrics. Thank you. As a musician, the way it came to fruition is just magical. Right down to the studio secretary whispering, "Big Boys Don't Cry". Pure genius. A love song that really isn't, but still gives you goosebumps. It took me this long to realize what the song really meant. Now I'm going through it myself, it hurts, but somehow the song still makes me feel good. 10cc rocks ❤️

I return to this song regularly. Love how it makes me feel. Something about him not really able to convince himself.... and we know his feelings are quite the opposite. Just captures something in my soul.😎
The song is about 2 people who love eachother but dont want to share their feelings with the world. They are scared when they fully go for it as a couple the negative influance of others would dammage what they truly have so they keep their love cocooned
i always relate to this song in the way of not wanting to admit he's in love because the other person doesn't like him back, so he's like whatever i'm not in love anyway but actually it hurts him big time, i feel like all the song is him trying to explain his behavior.
I was a senior in high school when this was released. The love of my young life was gone for a year as a foreign exchange student. But, it all worked out in the end. I'm still married to her, it's been almost 40 years!

I return to this song regularly. Love how it makes me feel. Something about him not really able to convince himself.... and we know his feelings are quite the opposite.
Just captures something in my soul.😎
"That 70's Show" brought me here!
Song was reviewed in yesterday's Wall Street Journal; found out song was released in May 1975. Takes me back. Great to have the lyrics!
Memories from years ago!!!
This song makes me cry over lost loves, past and present.
The song is about 2 people who love eachother but dont want to share their feelings with the world. They are scared when they fully go for it as a couple the negative influance of others would dammage what they truly have so they keep their love cocooned
ONE OF THE BEST SONG I EVER HEARD. HOWESOME 10CC!!!!!! THANKS
This song is beautiful but why does this song make me wanna cry?
Daddy's boom box sounded so good in the garage! Those days when I wanted to be a singer songwriter. Wow. Wow.
A technically brilliant as anything the Beatles did.
I really love this song !!! Thanks for the upload.
i always relate to this song in the way of not wanting to admit he's in love because the other person doesn't like him back, so he's like whatever i'm not in love anyway but actually it hurts him big time, i feel like all the song is him trying to explain his behavior.
I remember when this hit the charts. Memories, oh boy the memories. I still love her after all these years.
I was a senior in high school when this was released. The love of my young life was gone for a year as a foreign exchange student. But, it all worked out in the end. I'm still married to her, it's been almost 40 years!
