I grew up in Bilston, west midlands.
The first sound i ever heard from Slade was as a schoolboy passing a large wooden hut on the way to my school.
I thought it was a rowdy party, but i learned much later that it was Slade practicing.
So you could say I heard them live, but didnt see them.
It seems after then that they were in the charts in an instant, and i never stumbled on them again, but ive always never forgotten.
    It was around 1971.
I also liked Sweet along the way, but to me Slade had the edge, And they were local.
    Fantastic.

@MuddyBootz yes they did., its still there. I pass it about once a week or so when I visit the town and I often think about it.
I lived in Coseley at the time, and the hut was an old scout hut in Roseville, on a patch of land in Bayer Street as I walked to Coseley school.
It was demolished in 1980 and there are houses there now. For a time, Dave was often seen locally too.

Reading Festival 1980... Slade were a last minute replacement for Ozzy Osbourne's "Blizzard of Oz" and many people seemed to believe that they'd get boo-ed off / canned off.
They came on as one of the last acts on Sunday evening, they played an absolutely stunning set that blew away every other act that weekend (and there were some great acts that included Rory Gallagher, UFO and Iron Maiden) and I witnessed what was definitely one of the greatest live concerts I have ever been at. Jim Lea was truly demonic switching from bass guitar to violin and back again.
They also played "Merry Christmas Everybody" on the August Bank Holiday weekend but the crowd lapped it up.
That gig re-launched their careers and as someone who only knew Slade up to that point because of their chart singles, I went back and explored their albums properly to uncover some absolutely brilliant songwriting and I realised at that point how shamefully ignored they were.
It's fantastic to see Jim Lea is still going strong.
