Most people who have never had a cat seem to believe the stereotype that they are aloof, solitary creatures. Every cat that I've ever had has been the exact opposite! Like Wilbur, they are very friendly and SOCIABLE. Not just concerned with their own needs, they sense when we are struggling and do their best to comfort us.
100% agreed, cats are best friends if you genuine love them and are there for them
We've had 3 cats. Not one was 'aloof'. Ornery.. yes. Aloof.. no.
My friend had a cat that only liked her and would give you one look when you came to visit and then ignore you. One day I was really upset and this cat came over to comfort me. My friend and I were both amazed, it was a very moving experience and I did feel better with the comfort and love of this cat.😊
Same with all my cats through the years. All have been such sweet and total lovebugs. So affectionate and smart.
All cats are sociable and friendly. But exactly as with dogs, if they haven’t been socialised and had a loving upbringing then it will take time and patience to nurture that animal to become a regular furry friend. Cats will typically take a lot longer to achieve this if adults. I agree there are many people like this couple who are pretty clueless, and haven’t fully understood what to expect. Then are ‘surprised’ and shocked when they get a cute purring cuddle monster that is clingy and wants your attention much of the time.
You know you are a good person if you're loved and accepted by a cat 😻🥰❤
If a cat adopts you, I see that as a Blessing.
Not an adoption but a few years back, a friend invited me to her friends' place & they had a real skittish cat that hid from everyone. While we were chatting & having drinks in the living room, the cat slowly strolled up to my left arm, loafed & I started petting it absentmindedly. It did a little hiss at me but loved the attention, meanwhile everyone else was like 😲 since it never acted that way with even family. Def agree that animals can instinctively tell who's good or bad.

I took in a feral cat colony, they all became affectionate except for one cute tiny tuxedo female, Buhdda. For ten years she hissed & swiped at me every time I tried to put food in the bowls. At times I wondered why I even bothered. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, she became affectionate and inseparable. It was worth the wait. RIP my little one, I miss you.

The compassion and empathy your husband shows Wilbur will make him a better physician. Cats are as individual as humans. Some are aloof. Some are clingy and some are both depending upon the situation. We've been proud cat parents for almost four decades and no two cats have been alike. My husband never had cats growing up and he turned into the best cat parent. Wilbur is only the beginning of your cat parent adventures.
My cat is aloof and unbothered until I get on the phone to talk to someone and then he becomes a ninja stalker.
Even dogs have different personalities 😂 I have 4 and they are all different personalities one of them is clingy and follows me everywhere then I have another one who likes his space, doesn’t want to be bothered and likes occasional petting. It’s just so cute and funny how all dogs and cats just like humans have different personalities 😂
Enrichment is everything with pets. Let them be involved, invite them to experience & gently establish boundaries. This couple shows exactly the mindset needed to nurture a pet & make it family.

It always makes me laugh when people think that cats are so independent and aloof. After a long lifetime of owning cats I can tell you they definitely aren't LOL
Well, for me the big important difference is that cats don't usually fawn over you like dogs.
At least with rescue cats (my only cat experience), you have to earn their trust and love, and they still are less overtly affectionate than dogs.
If I walk into a house with dogs, they really go bananas greeting me, and it's a little bit much, where they just go crazy. If I walk into a house with cats, they may brush me to put their scent on me, might ask for pets, etc...
But with most dogs, you kinda have to push them away to get alone time.
That's the difference between cats and dogs to me, which I would call independence

We adopted a lil 3 month old kitten from a hoarding situation. You'd never know she had a rough start. She is SO affectionate and loving. Not the independent kind at all.

I have had my Velcro kitty for 15 years. These types of kittys are more like dogs, and they are SO smart. Smarter than any pet you will ever have.
What you two will find is you have an official beautiful baby boy, and he is going to be the love of your lives! The most unconditional love you will EVER have. Wilbur is a real beauty, a very special smart boy.

My cat fell in love with my husband, too! Regardless of their reputation, cats are the furthest thing from aloof. They adore people for the most part. My husband was a total dog person who became a devoted cat daddy. It was so fun to watch him fall under their spell.
Same with all of the five cats I've had over the years. All were such total lovebugs and sweethearts. Wanted to be with me all the time and loved to snuggle. Super affectionate, cute and smart!

Not all my cats have been cuddlers, but all of them have been very affectionate in their own way. Depending on how old the kitty was when I got them, and how well socialized to people, it’s sometimes taken a few months to figure out what made them feel loved and how they expressed themselves. But eventually we figured each other out.

I adopted a gray tabby just like Wilber, his name was Wolfie. I would ask for kisses and he would give them to me. He slept on the pillow next to me at night and was a complete love. About a month after hi adoption, he was diagnosed wit FIV. We cared for him until he passed a few weeks later. He had a short life but wasn't alone. So thankful I could comfort him.

Cats are cool--and so are the people who love them.
My husband was like that, had dogs but never a cat. Then his friend brought a box of kittens to work to get his buddies to take them home. My husband knows I would keep any animal lol, so took a kitten. After the kitten got used to the dogs since my animals always got along, and started playing like kittens do he was very amused. He said just watching the kitten play was better entertainment than the tv, lol. When his mom passed away Banjo laid on his lap all that day, and they got such a tight bond then.

I see people have a lot of misconceptions when it comes to cats. The fact most people say "oh cats are easier because they are independent" or "cats are cold they don't care about their owners". And then they have cats and are "surprised" they are much more affectionate and needy. Some even say "my cat is so different from other cats, he's like a dog!" and I roll my eyes... Cats are emotional, needy, affectionate and love their owners just like any other animal. They love to interact with their owners and feel loved.

I found my Smoky as a kitten, I hung out with him almost everyday in the summer while I was gardening & doing yard work. We became best friends. He’s my inside cat now..❤love him too much to risk letting him out now.

I've been around cats my whole life and my cat basically owns me.
But sometimes she comes around chalet on my lap and she will knead on the couch pillow and then she will sit on the kitchen table all night hour after hour and just meow and sometimes she will come and sleep with me all through the night but sometimes if I get up in the middle of the night she does not like that and she will leave as if to say okay I'm out of here.
