Plein Air Oil Painting | Dollar Cove Cornwall

  • Join me as I try to paint the beautiful evening light at Dollar Cove Gunwalloe in Cornwall. This is a lovely little cove on the Lizard Peninsula and is right on our doorstep. A ship sank here in many years ago and deposited a cargo of silver dollars!
I was plein air oil painting, looking into the blinding evening light. Quite a challenge when combined with a fast incoming tide! Great fun though.
I use a Jullian French easel which is heavy but sturdy and withstands the high winds that we often get in Cornwall. I painted onto a gessoed plywood panel around 30cm x 16cm
I used turpentine and a stand oil / turps medium. Here is a link to my video if you'd like to make your own: • OIL PAINTING MEDIUM - ...
Colours used - Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Magenta, Indian Red, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black and Viridian Green.
Thank you to Madeleine who helped me film this one and to Basil for being great fun.
Please leave any questions in the 'Comments' section - I do my best to reply to everyone.
    Bye for now - Andrew

You should bearrested by the brush police. Boy do you abuse brushes! Your love of Cornwall comes through with every stroke. Beautiful sheen on the water. Bravo!

Don’t show the brush police 👮‍♀️ this video please 😅. I’m always amazed how much you can do with a poor bristle less brush. Daniel Sprick is one of my favourite artists and he uses really cheap poor quality hobby brushes. All the best 👍🏻

Right ! I have both low price and medium price. But sometimes I would like to try something else. I paint small formats with gouache and fortunately I don't need animal bristles. But for porc bristles anyway they don't have to kill them for brushes, they are already killed for food.
About washing, I don't recommend Savon de Marseille because of the quantity of sodium that is a bit corrosive. When I paint with gouache, most of the time I don't need soap or just a little bit for staining colours as deep greens (😣) because I wash immediately after painting.
But I just discovered that I love working with extra-soft pastels only with my fingers. I hope I could download a short video to show you on RUclips.
      I wish you a beautiful summer 🌞

Thank you very much dear Andrew for giving me the name of your friend. I found him now on internet and his work is also very interesting and pleasant. I am sure he will be inspired in Brittany as well as he was before. I hope some time you could have a great trip in Brittany or somewhere in France with your family including... Of course... Basil 😄 !

    Hi Andrew,
What a lovely setting and that sunlight upon the water was so bright, but you made a difficult scene look so simple. I loved the commentary and the subtleness of the colours used. But what was really endearing about this beautiful scene is the way you captured the light and turned it into realism on the plyboard. I must admit the waves did look threatening towards your chosen spot, but it was the pressure you needed to paint this awesome scenery with some trepidation and speed that has paid off with a brilliant result. Overall, a Wonderful little painting in about 25 minutes. Well done mate. 😊👍💯🖐️

Thank you very much for your kind comments. The incoming tide definitely focused my mind and there was no slacking. I enjoyed it a lot and when I looked at the painting again yesterday I was pleased with the results.
      Best wishes to you

Beautiful impression Andrew. I particularly like the way you have caught the light on the water, lovely colours too, which capture the scene superbly. It`s interesting that you rarely sketch the scene first , example with charcoal - wish I had that confidence! It seems to make your paintings much more natural and organic...

Many thanks Steve. It takes time to build up a level of confidence but you’ll get there. I found the best thing was when I wasn’t too precious about my work. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t really matter. Move to the next one. That frees you up and builds confidence 👍🏻

Great video! I thought this gave some nice insight into your thought process as you were painting. I notice that when you introduce a new colour into part of the painting you seem to put some dabs of it elsewhere. Is that to maintain harmony over the whole painting?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Год назад +2

Thank you. Yes I find it helpful to repeat colours in other areas to keep harmony. Just be careful not to overdo it though 👍🏻

Hi Andrew ... What a beautiful painting in only 25 minutes! ... The way you captured the sun sparkle and reflections around the rocks really makes the painting ... Was noticing the lemon yellow you use is much paler than mine ... What brand of paint is yours? Glad to see Basil was keeping an eye on the tide coming in!

The lemon yellow is by Michael Harding but you can add white into a brighter version to get similar 👍🏻🎨

Andrew, когда сильно освещает солнце землю, воду и что-то ещё, попробуйте всё-таки воспользоваться солнцезащитными очками. Я одевала очки, когда сильно светит солнце, очень помогает увидеть правильный цвет и тон.
