Richard Petty wins his 7th and final Daytona 500. The energy crisis throughout the 70's led Detroit to manufacture more compact cars and following their lead NASCAR decided to mandate a 110-inch wheel base for the 1981 season (as opposed to the 115-inch wheel base from previous years). The downsized cars were much more unstable at high speeds and both John Anderson and Connie Sailer flipped during their qualifying races. NASCAR decided to institute larger spoilers for the 500 to help keep the cars planted onto the track. Bobby Allison led 117 but the larger spoiler was pushing a bigger pocket of air behind the cars and increased the effects of the draft. This allowed his competition to remain close and with just 24 laps to go, Richard Petty gambles and takes only fuel on his final pitstop to get himself out infront of the field and hold off Allison for the win.
Time of race: 2:56:50
Average Speed: 169.651 mph
Pole Speed: 194.624 mph
Cautions: 4 for 18 laps
Margin of Victory: 3.5 sec
Attendance: 130,000
Purse: $90,575
Richard petty took the 500 in every way imaginable. Domination some years. Luck in 79. And a strategy call
1981. One of my favourite Daytona 500 of all time apart from many others.
In 1981, NASCAR started clamping down on the model years of cars entered... No more 2 or 3 year old discontinued body styles or models of cars... Everything HAD to be current now - a racing version of whatever Detroit was producing at the time...
Is that why they made a big deal about Bobby Alison's Pontiac? I looked and searched why they tried to say his car was illegal but can't find why
@@satchpersaud8762 Check out Rick Houston’s Scene Vault Podcast. Bobby Allison’s 2 part interview explains the whole thing.
@@satchpersaud8762Allison's rear bumper mysteriously fell off early in the race. Others thought it gave him an aerodynamic advantage
"They're not changing tires?!"
2:43 Boogity Boogity Boogity! Let's go racing boys!
DW comes to Junior Johnson's team.
And he says the line at his radio.
My best NASCAR story: watched this race on TV with my girlfriend. We drank wine coolers and she was really into racing. After the race she led me to my room and she became my first. What a day!
At a boy!! My first was right before super bowl XXVII
Fucking chad
Dad is that you?
I think I enjoy these better than the current NASCAR. I just wish the video quality was better.
Didn’t change the tires? I call BS on the rubber compound. Love Richard though! I don’t think anyone is disappointed that he has Daytona 500 wins. Maybe Bobby. Who knows what would’ve happened had Waddell Wilson not missed the fuel mileage.
The king wins 👌
...And will likely NEVER be challenged!
I was also there, and my KING WON! Long love the King....Dilly Dilly! 43 .....
Richard Petty's seventh (and final) Daytona 500 victory
Even though, he could have gone on to win an eighth time.
Paul T. Backes no shit mr obvious
His last win was in 1984
@@strike_not_found That is also his 200th nascar cup win
...And likely will NEVER be Challenged!
I was there!!! My driver won!!!
That's what it was. He was lucky, 'cause the window net had not been perfected until about a year later.
It's so interesting how the cars raced so spread out and to the outside compared to racing between the 90's and now. Is it something to do with new regulations or restrictor plates today that make them drive in those tight packs?
That's almost all due to the effects of the restrictor plate. (Which is completely necessary, as cars would be going way to fast without them)
+Thomas Goris Except back then, they didn't use restrictor plates in the Daytona 500. Those came in the 1988 race.
They used restrictor plates in 1970. Only cars in the 358 ci range, were exempt .
It's the Plates that makes it so boring .
on jon andersons flip, it looked like his arm was hanging out thhe window
Ahh the old splash n go
NASCAR changed the rules to help GM as they still do .
And they always penalized Mopars so GM could keep up
Speed wasn't mentioned once. What were these 1981 cars running for speed?
Very late but Bobby Allison took it in a Pontiac 194.624 mph

No worries, thank you!
Just torque it down till it strips and then back it off 1/2 turn.that fixes it!
No pit road speed limit. Crazy! Someone had to die to make that happen.
David Broughall 1990 hooters 500 changed the pit rules
No, Mike Rich on Bill Elliott's crew at Atlanta when Rickey Rudd got spun into them. :'(
More than one someone had to die
.... Problemmatical....?
Anglo grammatical
When it was bush grand national yes yes
Too bad it's not like that anymore. Well maybe Camry's...but most "normal" people cannot afford a Mustang or Camaro off the showroom floor.
Detroit made some horseshit cars in the early eighties.
Nah there were some great cars then. You were too young to know.....
Cosmic Charlie They sure did. The 84 corvette was a piece of shit
