- I found this Storm Responder Generator on OfferUp for $100. The seller said it had less then 50 hours on the engine when it ran out of oil in threw the rod. The original engine block seemed to survive. My hope was to rebuild it until I found some damage at the bottom of the cylinder. Although still rebuildable, I looked online for any other engines that could be used instead. I quickly found a better quality Vanguard engine and decided to use that instead. The excitement was short lived when I fired the engine up and heard a loud knock. I assumed it was the connecting rod, but found out the counter balancer timing was off a tooth and the balancer counterweight was striking the crankshaft counterweight. Should be an easy fix. Lets finish repairing the Vanguard engine. When complete, the rebuilt generator will be better then it was before.

As a retired Harley mechanic, I have had damage as you found at the lower edge of a cylinder bore carefully welded by a local shop. since only one side of the repair needs to be finished to size, the bore can be resized by hand if necessary using an old piston (similar diameter) and sandpaper. I have repaired Harley engine and transmission parts (aluminum & iron) with good results like this where tolerances permit. Back in the day,,just about all HD and Indian repairs were FIELD repairs without benefit of sophisticated equipment. That being said, I watch Jim Condon videos because he's the best all around wrench and troubleshooter you'll ever see.
Looks like someone is going to have a really good generator, I hope they take good care of it.

James, when shortening screws/bolts, it is best to grind the chamfer on the threads BEFORE removing the nut in case the grinder rolls the partial thread over..
To all those video makers.
So few you tube makers follow chris-fix's method of filming. Talk over action during editing later on, and
do not stop the action, along with no head shots and no intro. So many want to be a tv star and this kills videos like this.
This method makes for such an enjoyable video to watch and to me seems like the perfect approach. I am happy to say, that you got it amigo. Keep it up.

As someone that went to tech schools for both automotive and motorcycle service and repair and a former H-D technician I really enjoy your videos. Like a lot of people I have gotten into the habit of throwing a lot of stuff away when it quits working if fixing it involves much expense or effort. Your channel reminds me that lot of old stuff can continue to serve a purpose if someone will put in some effort. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Tip: an inexpensive foam dollar store paint brush/applicator is handy for applying assembly lube.. saves on paper towels used to wipe lube from hands and gloves. Store brush handle up in a clean recycled glass or plastic jar with lid.
2) When using a hacksaw hold it with both hands to keep the blade running straight and true. Start the blade as far to the nose as possible. Push the saw forward placing slight forward pressure on the blade. Push forward until the blade each it's full length. Release the forward pressure on the blade and pull it back toward you to clear the cut . The blade only cuts on the forward stroke. Leaving pressure on the blade when drawing back only wears out the blade needlessly. You paid for the whole blade so get your value from the purchase. Hope this helps you and others..

Yes - Great example was fine tuning the new engine mounts - extending mounting holes and applying Loctite. Just the steady hand and experience that makes a great job

That's an impressive combination. It shrugged off that load like it wasn't even there. I could barely hear a change. There's a lot to be said for an industrial rated motor.

Thanks for another great video. Really glad to see that the engine issue was just timing the balancer. Also really like the detailed output testing, but don't understand the THD diagnostics and using a clamp meter to do that test. If you have the time, it would be great if you could do a video on THD testing, theory and equipment you use to test.
Neighbor just gave me 3 old mowers. All 3 been sitting unused outside for years. 2 seized solid and 1 very hard to pull over but it's also got a rotten deck. So I used 1 mowers handle. 1 deck and the one barely moving motor. Tore the motor down and cleaned and checked for damages. Got 1 working mower out of the deal for nearly no new parts. Ideally I need new gaskets and now that one runs I'll prob get some for it. Your videos got me all the info o needed to rebuild the one mower.
With the effort and hard work going into this generator and your approval of the quality of the donor engine, I thought you might have kept this one for yourself!!

The 1st week of April 2023 after the tornado came through you could hear hundred of generators running and even more people wishing they had one. Power was restored to 90% of all customers at 7 days. I loaned my generators out to friends in need.
I been impressed with the small portable one I got over 20 years ago and it's still starts 1st pull. I do my best to keep it clean and in the best shape. I have learned a lot from your videos and hope to be able to keep my generators for years to come ready for when they are needed.
You reminded me, Jim, several months ago, I bought a Honda engine from a rental company. It wasn't very old, but it was not taken care of as it should have been. Bolts much longer than needed were used to bolt it to the pressure washer frame, and nuts were used to have enough threads to tighten it down, and parts were missing, including the governor rod. The owner said he liked Briggs engines better than Honda, and it showed. If this guy was in my area, I wouldn't rent anything from him. I bought the engine as a parts unit, but I believe the valves are just out of adjustment. He said he couldn't get it to run right. Honda engines and the clones are my preferred engines to work on. They are simply and easy to repair for the most part.

I had a garden tractor with a 16 HP Vanguard. That V2 engine was awesome. It sounded like a Harley at idle.
Unless I misunderstood... Youre a much more controlled person than I am. Regardless of how well you got that engine running. I would have to contact the chump that sold you an engine that he had dug into and thrown back together with so little concern that he didnt even include all the hardware, then sold it to you as running well... I would make sure he knew that he was a grade A jackass and that if I could screw up his reputation as a seller- I would go out of my way to do so. So many like him out there thats its destroying the platform of buying from a private party. Love the video.

Originally, I received an early 1980s Tecumseh powered C-Man from a yard sale. This is when I learned that TECUMSEH Carburetors are "FUN..." to repair...
Iwas hooked after finding a Small Engine Repair Manual at my local GOODWILL for $0.75!
Some people may find doing repairs/rebuilds as a frustrating "waste of money," but I found that it is SUPREMELY RELAXING, unless it is with a peice that is relied on.
Late at night (without power or Pneumatic tools) I would routinely go to the garage when I couldn't sleep, but be forewarned, TIME FLYES!

Imagine buying this generator....you know EXACTLY what you are getting.....You get to see the work that was done, what mods were made and what the performance during testing was.... Nice! . . . and all of that guaranteed by James Condon's passion and professionalism! Nice.
When you are testing the output One suggestion I have is you have a string of incandescent bulbs with a switch to each individual bulb so when you are near the maximum output for testing the breakers you can’t switch on one bulb at a time with the increments of say 100 whats you can test the max output and overload with the accuracy to whatever size bulb you fit, you would also be able to see the hurts change as you overload the generator or engine with 10 bulbs screwed to a board. You could slowly increase the load up to 1 kW increment of 100 W. At a time. Cheers Derek.

I was taught that the flywheel should have the rust removed on the outer surface towards the coil assembly. And any rust on the coil cleaned as well, That the rust could diminish the output of the coil.

Does my heart good to see all the praise for this Briggs setup. I have this very same unit, albeit the 6500w, 13hp version, bought in 2003 (Hurricane Isabel). It's still in perfect condition (55 hrs) and I have since bought the Honda SX6500 as a companion (insurance). Maybe I wasted my money on the Honda, lol. Keep up the good work, James!

Good work there James, as at least one other has already said, the damaged crankcase of the original motor looked salvageable to me with some minor tig welding work followed by some hand finishing work with files and scraper perhaps. Your solution with the Vanguard engine however will be a better fix long term.
My only gripe is that I feel that your videos are too long winded and would be improved with tighter editing. About 50% could be cut or speeded up without losing any important detail, and that to me would be a significant improvement. Having said all that, I appreciate your considerable efforts in filming, editing and uploading all the work you do, and you have my thanks for doing it all.
Excellent video! And, most importantly, you’ve torqued everything to specs. I’ve watched many, many RUclips videos, and I’ve not yet seen anyone torque their fasteners, not to mention they never even mention torque requirements. It’s one of my huge pet peeves, because so many people are learning improperly. Thank you!
Your videos are the most informative I've seen. So much of what you do with the engines is also useful for other power equipment. Nice catch on the timing gear. When I used to use a non AVR generator to run the whole house during a power outage, I adjusted the speed to 60 Hz for the nominal house load which was around 1500 watts total. When a big appliance kicked on, the speed as well as voltage dropped some. I was more concerned about running at elevated voltages, especially when we had a 5 day outage. The genset was rated at 7kw, but I rarely exceeded 3kw total. The THD worried me given all the electronic controls in the furnace and refrigerators/ freezer, so I got a Champion inverter unit. Frequency, voltage and THD regulation are very good.
That vanguard was a great deal for the price and just needed the timing fixed

A SUPER runner! Can't beat a Vanguard and the Lad gets a double A-PLUS for the bubble light! I remember them from WAY back and I know my old Coleman is just a plug BUT it's a plug that has a steel sleeve in it! GOOD fix all the way, Pal! God Bless and give the lad a SQUEEZE from the old hillbilly!

U.K. Hello James - well worth watching channel. I expect you know, but Locktight make some very interesting products. On one occasion, we tried one of their products (sorry, I can't remember which one) on a 1200 HP engine gearbox differential spline which had fretted quite a lot. When it was stripped after testing, the Locktight came out in strips. It survived the enormous torque very well. It took 40 tonnes to push the shaft out. They also do a loose bearing one too. I thought there might be an occasion where you might save landfill, although your engines are a tad smaller.
