80 transitional and 20 farmhouse for me. I'm glad we are "allowed" to mix things up! I had no idea I was doing that. I guess I was getting tired of one and the 20 changes when I get bored.
Ooooh, what an interesting episode! I've lived in a hollow tree (ok, it's a log home. same diff) for nearly 20 years. I recently purchased a condo home that was built in the mid-90's and still retains much of the same style (LOTS of golden oak). I find myself in something of a quandary over how to update it. Rustic/craftsman was definitely the vibe with the log house, so my habit is to fall back on that. But, this new place clearly calls for something different. In the first place, the walls are flat rather than brown/bumpy. Have you ever been brought to a standstill of indecision? That's where I'm at, now.
yes, I was all motivated after the guest bath refresh, started 6 months ago with ceilings and the 3rd bath, plus one coat on the master bath walls (still waiting for shower to be finished). Picked some wall/trim colors, but then thinking did I miss another good choice... endlessly for months, while holidays, new puppy, "life" got in the way 🤪 We have a new sliding glass door and larger window waiting to be installed in the master, so AGAIN I think I should wait to paint the walls, but its a trap, right? What if it takes another year, with no pictures/dec, no outlet covers, no drapes?? Dare I just slap on one coat now, put everything back, only to deconstruct and repaint when the installs finally happen? 🤔 "Notice what's not working - do ANYTHING different"?!?
Currently I'm living in a 1913 Craftsman house that's been renovated many times so no 80 - 20, but it's mostly Craftsman with a bunch of country (aka pine furniture in simple styles) and a little bit of a lot of other stuff, some antique, some more contemporary. But I'm moving and while my new 5 year old house has lots of similar things, such as stained glass windows, it has a much more French Chateau-y feeling, so I'm going after more of a Parisian apartment feeling of mixing French traditional or country with a few modern pieces.
I am very traditional for my base, but with clean lines. My decor is neutral so that I can change things up during the year. I decorate very feminine in some rooms and mix in some rustic for my husband. Fall, I go more rustic. Spring, I go floral and feminine. I don't know what you call that.
My main style is Midcentury Modern, mostly vintage, with a couple of simple, rustic Japanese tansu, and of course a couple of Noguchi lamps (which straddle the two styles!) Artwork is an even mix, leaning slight toward the Japanese.
@@arlettasloan6453 Thank you. It might look better in your visualization than the reality, LOL, but I do like that it has a warm feeling. What I don't have is a particular sense for color, and James' ability is mind-boggling. I decided to keep the Wool Skein from the previous owners.
When your decor is maximalist grand millenial boho fairy nest with lots of lace, the rules have been set on fire and burned to the ground. There is no gray anywhere. There are very few straight lines. Lots of old pieces, lots of over-stuffed furniture, lots of curves, lots of warm woods, lots of color. Mostly, nothing matches but everything goes together. My house exterior is two shades of taupe with a fuschia front door, purple adirondack chairs and white wicker are on my big front porch. My interior is filled with color. It’s not cluttered but there are wonderful things everywhere. I have created “pockets of pretty” all over my home. It is welcoming and friendly in my house and you can put your feet up on my coffee table if you are so inclined. I really like your backdrop on this video, James. Since it’s summer, I think I will do something like that on my sliding door out to the deck. That would be pretty and fun. My house is joyful and happy, which makes me happy, too.🌸
Oh, I want to be your friend and hang out in your house! My Victorian, apothecary, curio cabinet, Room of Requirement with fairy doors soul would feel so calmed.
Omg I think my OCD ADHD brain would get so over stimulated SOOOO fast and I hate it bc I love colors I just can't have them around me unless their light pastel, It would definitely be better then being in a house with lots of browns and rusty, dirty, muddy looking like my father in laws omg I can't go to his house the floors just always look dirty, is walls always look dirty and dingy bc their off white, and he has just random old wood tables, chairs, random crao hanging on the walls that just look dingy, he hangs the stuff I would throw it all away in the garbage. I have to have a bright, white white, simple, minimal looks very bright and clean home or I'll send all my time cleaning bc it never looks clean to my eyes and brain. I also can't do rounded things like everything has to be very straight, centered, has a place, organized, simple. I think my house is cluttered to much it drives me nuts and people tell me all the time "you barley have anything it's very clear, free, clean and I'm like no it's a disaster it's a mess, dirty, my water bill is so high at the house I'm in atm bc theirs carpet I'm shampooing every week bc I hate carpet and if I even see a light spot I'll scrub the whole thing carpet is just so gross and dirty even when it looks clean there's so much dirt and grime deep in the fibers I can't get out and I know it's there I won't even sit on my carpet. I wish I could be more free and fun like you 😩
My original plan was an industrial style but have gone in a bit of a different direction. My home structurally is industrial 20% and everything else is 80% modern/contemporary. That includes flooring, furniture, wall colours and cabinetry. I'm in love with the finished look.
I have a Victorian farmhouse 1893. My design is a work in progress, but antique farmhouse about 70%. Obsession for cut glass and DIY painting 30% I’m working on it. 😃
I still love the mid century modern/scandi look but I also have some traditional pieces. They don't integrate seamlessly so I really need to be careful where I put things
I can relate! Midcentury Modern can be very restrictive, if you allow it to be. I've loosened up over the years. When I first began, my decorative items were limited to modern, which was especially difficult. When I finally took a good look at that rather famous photo of Charles and Ray Eames in their house, I was struck by the mix of elements! The house may have been minimalist, but the decor was a profusion of interesting pieces. That was a turning point for me, though I'm still relatively minimalist.
@@dennischiapello3879 ah! I'm going to have to look at their place. I am actually looking at an Eames knock off chair but am also drawn to a more transitional one too. Restrictions are boring! :D
Enjoy your smiling face on my YT FReed when I open YT. You got Positive High Vibe Energies, so "+" for You and Your Viewers! 🏆 Have a fabulous weekend! MC Mod is my ❤ with a zest of Ancient Greek. Think about it ... Yes, it is that level of "!" (Think of "lines" in the designs.) Art Deco and Egyptian works fab too.
Yes, I've had a gut feeling about this 90's house we bought ... a kind of 🤮 sort of feeling or maybe 😰. But it was all to be remodeled, but we had a lot of tree-clearing to do, but we tore into the master bath, but life got in the way. 😁 All that to say, 4 years later, I HAVE.TO.PAINT.EVERYTHING.NOW. Aha - I thought it was all builder's white, but upon painting a ceiling white, turns out the whiole house is actually "dingy dusty grey/yellow dark not-white". No wonder I've been depressed! PS I know nothing, so yes to rules👍
We're downsizing. I'm going to aim for 80% transitional and 20% coastal. I think color selection will be important. Watch the video on coastal colors. Would like more on coastal colors.
If I could swing it, mid century modern would be my 80 and bohemian - not Boho, but absolute gypsy madness- would be my 20. (sigh) Which makes me miss industrial. Actually it would be "The Englishman's Room" if I could get it. But, I only saw that in one book, back in 70's.
@@thepaintpeople I love evergreen frost and October mist but they look like dirty water in my living room…greens just don’t work in that room so I think I’m going with Aleutian…💁♀️
Humm.... I don't commit to any of your styles. So Eclectic?? Traditional meets Shabby Chic? Mine would be 80% Country as in Traditional but far more relaxed and inviting, not formal feeling at all. The 20% would be Costal or Shabby chic inspired for colours. So colours muted like costal, but a wide variety of colours, and happy colours like shabby chic. Or they could be darker or midtones. NEVER a cold, hard uninviting grey. Trim is white but a warmer white. Quilts, blankets are available but never look sloppy or like they are hiding stains on the furniture. They are meant to be used. The furniture itself is more of an acquired look and serves a purpose while managing to all work together. Wood pieces could be painted, but more likely is just beautifully finished to show the beauty of the wood. I love built ins and they would be white or off white. Grace, elegance meets comfort by the lake or sea for me. All in a climate where roses and blue hydrangeas thrive!!!
The style I work to incorporate is 80% early attic and 20% garage sale with your paint expertise to tie it all together!! Thanks James!!
LOL! Well said.
Underrated comment. You do you!
LOL! I do think this is the style of 90% of Americans. Then there’s the IKEA/Pottery Barn/West Elm/Magnolia Home melange for another 8%. Eek.
Well said James!! I like the upcycle, recycle, school of design. I’m totally traditional but love adding a couple of usable antique pieces 🥰
Love that you are doing paint videos frequently!

I love formal french provincial and mediterranean baroque and mixing them with contemporary and sleek. Now and then a traditional modern touch.
Sounds great!
