- A senior living apartment complex in Houston is accused of abandoning it’s vulnerable residents after a severe weather outbreak in Houston on Thursday.
Absolutely selfish and callous and neglectful management! Criminal charges should be filed.
Absolutely!
Realistically, nothing will happen. A settlement will be reached, people will be content with it, and the story will be forgotten in a few days. Next storm, rinse and repeat.
Amen!
Yes to stick your parents in nursing homes and leaving degenerates to “care” for them.
*The local meteorologists failed.*
All of these slum lords all over the country need to be rooted out and prosecuted.
The owner should be arrested and forced to live in one of his slummy apartments!
Joe pesci, the super.
I don't think that's going to happen. Saying things like that might feel good for some people, but it achieves no results. This is human nature. Expect it from everybody, trust no one, and try to be as independent and self sufficient as possible, because nobody is going to help you when the weathers turns bad.
then abbot will pardon him like he does all actual criminal
@@Winston-lf7sb You are mistaking him for Dem/lib/lefty/Marxist commie Soros district attorneys.
@@BlueSkyCountry During Katrina, several staff kept taking care of the old folks. Please do not throw everyone into the same pot.
Where were State and other officials designated to inspect this place? This didnt happen overnight!
The officials are busy at fancy restaurants and comparing their private jets.
It's Texas and Abbot has defunded the inspectors
Another person also said this.....If it's section 8 then state authorities are required to regularly check the property for safety......someone isn't doing their job.
Republicans are liars
That's what no new taxes gets you. The people that can least afford to move are being forced to live in horrible conditions. And those taxes could come from the rich if poor people would stop voting for the repukians.
Everyone that walked out on those people Should be held accountable ⁉️⁉️
No laws require mere employees to stay on a job. Except for law enforcement ,firefighters .
For what?? No one has to stay on a job if they don't want to.
@@JuicedUpLemon Exactly. Its sad but thats life.
@@isocarboxazidit’s not abuse. It’s quitting.
The absentee, probably out of state, land owners are paid big bucks through HUD for these buildings to be maintained. This has been a problem for many years in Houston. After 36 years living in Houston when I needed an affordable place to live after Harvey I ended up in Tennessee. They are not perfect here but pretty close and we are inspected yearly
This is because huge corporations own these places FOR PROFIT.
Yep. That is the real problem here.
And the residents get fraked over.
Are they receiving federal funds for Section 8 etc. They need to drop the hammer on the owner. Anyway the owner needs to be brought to justice.
Management needs to be behind bars
Wanna bet they all will still pay. Rent. Cartels are the owners here in Houston
Reckless endangerment!
Its not legally mgmnts job. Any charges,,go to owners.
@@alphaomega5909 true
@@lendaryreviews I'm pretty sure cartels would do a better job than this owner ever did
Retired Senior Assisted Living Administrator here. This story is absolutely appalling and unacceptable. I am so happy to hear that they are going after the owners.
This makes me SICK!! What kind of people abandoned elderly and physically disabled people?!! OMG! There's a special place in hell for these people!!!! 😡
YES!!!
People who have their own families to get home to?
what kind of people? THEIR KIDS!!
It is to be expected, that is how humans are. After every storm or cold/hot spell, I expect these things to happen and will be surprised if it doesn't. Look out for yourself and your loved ones and rely on nobody. Nobody can be trusted.
America
There's more to this story than they're telling us.
Always.
Yes. Probably that the owners voted for Ted Cruz and Abbott so, no wonder they're lying assholes.🤷🏽
The "more to this story" is it's section 8 housing for disabled seniors. If this place was bad for a long time like the Mayor said... Wtf was the housing authiroty doing. There are supposed to inspect all units annually and when someone moves into a unit.
Pretty simple if you ask me. Section 8 housing for seniors . They don’t care
We've only experienced the rhetoric of regressive politicos and media. Truth may emerge to the light of day.
The owner(s) probably operate from another state or country. They don't care. They've made $$$ from S.S etc. It's the American way. Once the value is sucked out of you. You're left to suffer alone.
In Iowa, republicans will help them file bankruptcy, walk away with as much cash as possible and push the residents off on the tax payers, it's the MAGA way
People don't have any conscience anymore. This is criminal.
People have been like this throughout history. Just pick up a book on the medieval and Renaissance period and the Gilded Age.
Well let’s see the follow ups. I’d like to see how good the new Houston mayor is!!!’
Just keep Lina (Hidalgo) away from him and I think he will be fine.
@@derrickhamilton6130grow up, this is his issue….acting like a child on social media gets you nowhere, I bet you are an immature pain in the ssa in real life,
Owners and management need to be in jail.
Who owns them is what I would like to know 🤬
Also the name of the management company: "Creative Property Management"
"Jeannette Cobian" is listed as the Property Manager on the "Independence Hall Apartments" web site.
Thank you KPRC 2 Houston, for giving attention to this story. And also thanks to Mayor Whitmire for stepping in and doing the right thing by these elderly folks.
The city had received numerous complaints over the years and did nothing. The mayor can go f himself as pretends to be in shock about the conditions. I'd like to see what campaign the owner of this facility has donated to. Follow the money, people, follow the money.
For an incapacitated population, certain emergency facilities should be required. A storm shelter, in Houston, should be one. I think ADA should get involved
The management is disgraceful and disgusting to disrespect the senior citizens and disability people who trying to live a life instead they get treated like garbage
I'ma paraplegic vet confined to a hospital bed.. you'd be surprised how much this happens.. my town has 🌪️ the other day (Kansas) and they saud we would get ten minutes notice to go to the shelter.. that's not near enough time for me to call an ambulance and get to the shelters as i cant move without help.. we will all be abandoned eventually..
Be sure to get a petition going to send governor ? Nobody can stop you .
Help them all Jesus Christ please . Light be. Amen
How did these places owners get away with abusing elderly people??
We hear this over and over again.
Horrible stories about the living conditions. Come on people!!
They deserve love!
How can people be so cruel to them?
There should be EMERGENCY SNAP BENEFITS for seniors to purchase hot foods!!
Usually there is replacement if they call EBT and explain .
I'm afraid Whitmire just uncovered a whole can of worms. If you've been around commercial real estate in Houston a few years, this condition like this building is more common than you think. Houston has more slumlords than NYC. And we have 1/10 the buildings.
Sounds like a lawsuit
I bet the governor has no problem with this. I'm so glad the mayor is doing something about this.
That's criminal.
Good to see a Mayor step up and DO SOMETHING for elderly citizens in need....anywhere else and they would be fending for themselves and living on sidewalks.
Probably took the TV camera to make it happen.
@@snowmiaow Probably so.
Oasis at pearland needs to be investigated
This is insane…. Management and who is in charge of the building should be charged,,,, but also why aren’t the family members checking in on their relatives… odd
Arrest everybody when they come back
I thought they were talking about storm damage at first. There's too many apartments/ houses owned by slum loards that need to be investigated.. these people wouldn't be living there if they could afford a lawyer to take these money hungry people to court
It must be a great relief to these most vulnerable of our citizens to see that crucial help is on the ground and assisting them now. 💔
Who was the management company??
Let's pray for those residents.
And suddenly everything is fixed and okay for them, right?
@@BlueSkyCountry I'm guessing that it's more than you will do for them.
@@petemarron6677 Either way, nothing you or I can do in front of a keyboard will produce any results, so it is probably smart to just not even bother. What I am doing is reminding everyone that this is not isolated. It happens every minute. Best to be prepared and try not to rely on anybody else.
@@BlueSkyCountry I'm not praying for my keyboard. I'll even pray for you. Peace.
@@petemarron6677 That won't be necessary because it does me no good. As a society, we have been settling for feelings instead of solid results, and that is why nothing is changing or improving. I don't care about feelings. I require results, otherwise I rather have nothing.
Shut that place down”
Force a sell off to a management group that will actually fix and replace.
There's no need to put people out when there's nowhere they can go.
You want those old people to be homeless? 😂
It was shut down. That's the problem
That’s horrible just horrible Mayor thank you for going after the horrible .Praise God
This is Evil. How dare you take care of our elders this way 🤬
It's the property owners responsibility to take care of the place and keep it livable. But it's not their responsibility to provide ice and food for residents.
How about you take care of your elders yourself? I can feel your brain blue screening from here
Slum lord.
Honorable bring tears to my eyes. I demand the state government help them. Cynthie The ne-gro Buddha, Seshat age 62.
This is happening all over the country. Big companies own most of the senior centers, and they are abandoning the people at these facilities. Young people don't want to take care of these people. That is the real problem.
That is soo soo wrong 😡😡
Why is anyone surprised? Everything is a business in this country
The manager was tired of being the fall guy. I get that part, but at least report it and call their families🤦🏽♀️ Don’t just leave the people. When I worked in the hospital, you had to save at least one person. Of I’m not pushing a wheelchair so I’m getting all my patients that can walk.
Neglect!
Owners and Management needs to be in JAIL
I'm surviving in an unsafe senior facility now in California. I've been here for 6 years and we have had 5 managers and we don't have one right now. NO maintenance and no hope.😔
Call the local news. So sorry. I'm a senior on housing in a city that care. Deeply.
The greedy slumlord should be prosecuted to fullest extent possible.
Start with pulling the Real Estate Management Company's business license.
Where are the familiar members of these elderly people.
They are taking their social security money.
That’s terrible!
Privatization of essential services gets you THIS. Mismanagement and neglect in pursuit of PROFIT.
Of course, going the other way and having the Government handle things doesn't solve the issue all that much.... they'll still cut corners to save money and there you go. *SMDH*😞
Whatever. This is not new or a surprise. No matter how much you spend, elderly and disabled ‘care’ is bs.
Confiscate the apartment complex and give it to someone that has a good track record.
How can you neglect the vulnerable people you've agreed to care for 😢
Its normal for management to leave senior facilities during storms and leave it on the lowest paid CNA's and nurses with 24+ hour shifts
That's pathetic af!! I would love to help them. I got one dumb ish on my background, wasn't even convicted need a non disclosure. Then I'll be able to work for places like these.
😂 get ready for that McDonald job boy
Oh this is normal and it gets a lot worse y'all look at how bad things turned out for people like this in Katrina.
Deplorable? I don’t think you know what that word means!
Great mayor. The owner has left them!
Sue! Sue! and Sue again. This is outrageous and disgusting and criminal.
Subsidised anything is just a money grift. Put the owner away.
A precursor of what to expect when the SHTF for real.
Somebody gets it. Thank you for being that one light on in a sea of idealistic and naive comments.
Jail time
Unacceptable. City or country should take it over. Mant of these senior resident places are a sham.
Horrible 😢😢 those poor people!! Unacceptable!!!!!
I smell a lawsuit happening. Was the facility taking their checks? Shame.
Who is the company and how many other facilities do they operate
They should be charged with abandonment. In Washington State, caregivers and staff can be charged with abandonment for doing something like this. It is so abhorrent and unethical.
Do these poor people have any family or are their families too selfish to help them? The people that left MUST FACE CHARGES!!!
UNBELIEVABLE HOW ANYONE CAN DO THAT! THEY SHOULD ALL BE IN JAIL!
Thats crazy. Nobody should have to live this way.
That is ridiculous and the saddest part is that this isn’t even close to the only facility like this. Too many assisted living facilities have apathetic staff that frequently neglect both residents and building upkeep.
Pay peanuts, get monkeys. The blame lies with the ownership of these places. You can find good workers who care when you pay them decent wages. These owners are scamming everyone, residents, employees, the government.
For Shame. How cowardly and dishonorable.
Dont expect other people to watch over your loved ones when times get tough.
Many disabled and elderly have no loved ones.
Another example of not really caring about our elderly & disabled who apparently had no one looking out for them. Shameful. Evil.
And this is why I will never, ever go to one of those places.
That's not right 😮
Hope they are taken to court!!!
In my experience living with PCWs and nurses, it's when the storm hits that they get called on to help people like this. The government literally send cars to theirs homes to make sure they get where they are needed during snow storms (I live in the East Coast of Canada so that's the only storms we get really). So sad
That management crew ALL need to go to PRISON. AFTER using all that fool's money to pay for those residents' relocation costs, pain and suffering. If that management team got government money to maintain this place, federal FRAUD charges need to be hammered DOWN.
Prison for all of them
The management should be locked up for elder abuse and neglect.
Hold them accountable.
The owner needs to be in prison for a very long time.
Where was all the authority before this? Shame on everyone.
This is shameful!!!
Criminal!
You would be surprised the number of Senior apartments that have the same problem. I know from personal experience.
Absolutely disgusting and these people should be held accountable and charged accordingly
Makes me so sad. It's hell to be poor.
Is there nursing staff or his this independent living? The news is so slanted I don't believe it any more. The whole area there was damaged by the storms the city has been paralyzed. None of these residents look like they've missed a meal.
Nothing will be done about this
God Bless the emergency services and mayor for heading there.......The management of this facility needs to be fined because you SIMPLY CAN'T leave vunerable people unsupervised...
I think it's disgusting that the city has nowhere for them to go it's outrageous so where would they go if the place fell down
No excuse! I hope the staff go to prison! A nation that abandons its most vulnerable speaks to its character.
Thank you Mayor Whitmire!
Mayor avoiding blame when these buildings should have been getting ongoing “inspections”. Maybe just a meet up to exchange money I guess. 🤦♂️
And the staff and managers were all arrested and criminally charged right ?
Good on the mayor! I hope they end up behind bars.
Shameful!
